But now, those younger in years scorn me, whose fathers I would not have seen fit to place with the dogs of my flock,1 Mas ahora ríense de mí los que son más jóvenes que yo, a cuyos padres no juzgaba yo dignos de mezclar con los perros de mi grey.
the strength of whose hands was nothing to me, and they were considered unworthy of life itself.2 Aun la fuerza de sus manos, ¿para qué me servía?; había decaído todo su vigor,
They were barren from poverty and hunger; they gnawed in solitude, layered with misfortune and misery.3 agotado por el hambre y la penuria. Roían las raíces de la estepa, lugar sombrío de ruina y soledad.
And they chewed grass and the bark from trees, and the root of junipers was their food.4 Recogían armuelle por los matorrales, eran su pan raíces de retama.
They took these things from the steep valleys, and when they discovered one of these things, they rushed to the others with a cry.5 De entre los hombres estaban expulsados, tras ellos se gritaba como tras un ladrón.
They lived in the parched desert and in caves underground or above the rocks.6 Moraban en las escarpas de los torrentes, en las grietas del suelo y de las rocas.
They rejoiced among these kinds of things, and they considered it delightful to be under thorns.7 Entre los matorrales rebuznaban, se apretaban bajo los espinos.
These are the sons of foolish and base men, not even paying any attention to the land.8 Hijos de abyección, sí, ralea sin nombre, echados a latigazos del país.
Now I become their song, and I have been made into their proverb.9 ¡Y ahora soy yo la copla de ellos, el blanco de sus chismes!
They loathe me, and so they flee far from me, and they are not reluctant to spit in my face.10 Horrorizados de mí, se quedan a distancia, y sin reparo a la cara me escupen.
For he has opened his quiver and has afflicted me, and he has placed a bridle in my mouth.11 Porque él ha soltado mi cuerda y me maltrata, ya tiran todo freno ante mí.
Immediately, upon rising, my calamities rise up to the right. They have overturned my feet and have pressed me down along their way like waves.12 Una ralea se alza a mi derecha, exploran si me encuentro tranquilo, y abren hacia mí sus caminos siniestros.
They have diverted my journeys; they have waited to ambush me, and they have prevailed, and there was no one who might bring help.13 Mi sendero han destruido, para perderme se ayudan, y nada les detiene;
They have rushed upon me, as when a wall is broken or a gate opened, and they have been pulled down into my miseries.14 como por ancha brecha irrumpen, se han escurrido bajo los escombros.
I have been reduced to nothing. You have taken away my desire like a wind, and my health has passed by like a cloud.15 Los terrores se vuelven contra mí, como el viento mi dignidad es arrastrada; como una nube ha pasado mi ventura.
But now my soul withers within myself, and the days of affliction take hold of me.16 Y ahora en mí se derrama mi alma, me atenazan días de aflicción.
At night, my bone is pierced with sorrows, and those who feed on me, do not sleep.17 De noche traspasa el mal mis huesos, y no duermen las llagas que me roen.
By the sheer number of them my clothing is worn away, and they have closed in on me like the collar of my coat.18 Con violencia agarra él mi vestido, me aferra como el cuello de mi túnica.
I have been treated like dirt, and I have been turned into embers and ashes.19 Me ha tirado en el fango, soy como el polvo y la ceniza.
I cry to you, and you do not heed me. I stand up, and you do not look back at me.20 Grito hacia ti y tú no me respondes, me presento y no me haces caso.
You have changed me into hardness, and, with the hardness of your hand, you oppose me.21 Te has vuelto cruel para conmigo, tu mano vigorosa en mí se ceba.
You have lifted me up, and, placing me as if on the wind, you have thrown me down powerfully.22 Me llevas a caballo sobre el viento, me zarandeas con la tempestad.
I know that you will hand me over to death, where a home has been established for all the living.23 Pues bien sé que a la muerte me conduces, al lugar de cita de todo ser viviente.
Truly, then, you do not extend your hand in order to consume them, and if they fall down, you will save them.24 Y sin embargo, ¿he vuelto yo la mano contra el pobre, cuando en su angustia justicia reclamaba?
Once, I wept over him who was afflicted, and my soul had compassion on the poor.25 ¿No he llorado por el que vive en estrechez? ¿no se ha apiadado mi alma del mendigo?
I expected good things, but evil things have come to me. I stood ready for light, yet darkness burst forth.26 Yo esperaba la dicha, y llegó la desgracia, aguardaba la luz, y llegó la oscuridad.
My insides have seethed, without any rest, for the days of affliction have prevented it.27 Me hierven las entrañas sin descanso, me han alcanzado días de aflicción.
I went forth mourning, without anger, and rising up, I cried out in confusion.28 Sin haber sol, ando renegrido, me he levantado en la asamblea, sólo para gritar.
I was the brother of snakes, and the companion of ostriches.29 Me he hecho hermano de chacales y compañero de avestruces.
My skin has become blackened over me, and my bones have dried up because of the heat.30 Mi piel se ha ennegrecido sobre mí, mis huesos se han quemado por la fiebre.
My harp has been turned into mourning, and my pipes have been turned into a voice of weeping.31 ¡Mi cítara sólo ha servido para el duelo, mi flauta para la voz de plañidores!
