1 Now the earth was of one language and of the same speech.	1 Tutta la terra aveva una sola lingua colle stesse parole.
2 And when they were advancing from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt in it.	2 Or, partendosi dall'oriente, gli uomini trovarono una pianura nella terra di Sennaar, e vi abitarono.
3 And each one said to his neighbor, “Come, let us make bricks, and bake them with fire.” And they had bricks instead of stones, and pitch instead of mortar.	3 E dissero l'uno all'altro: «Venite, facciamo dei mattoni e cociamoli al fuoco ». E si servirono di mattoni invece di pietre, e di bitume invece di cemento,
4 And they said: “Come, let us make a city and a tower, so that its height may reach to heaven. And let us make our name famous before we are divided into all the lands.”	4 e dissero: «Venite, edifichiamoci una città e una torre la cui cima tocchi il cielo, e rendiamo famoso il nostro nome avanti di disperderci per tutta la terra ».
5 Then the Lord descended to see the city and the tower, which the sons of Adam were building.	5 Ma il Signore, sceso a veder la città e la torre che stavan fabbricando i figli d'Adamo,
6 And he said: “Behold, the people are united, and all have one tongue. And since they have begun to do this, they will not desist from their plans, until they have completed their work.	6 disse: « Ecco, sono un sol popolo, han tutti la medesima lingua, e, avendo cominciato a far quest'opera, non desisteranno dai loro disegni, finché non li abbiano eseguiti.
7 Therefore, come, let us descend, and in that place confound their tongue, so that they may not listen, each one to the voice of his neighbor.”	7 Venite adunque, e scendiamo a confondere il loro linguaggio in modo che non s'intendano più ».
8 And so the Lord divided them from that place into all the lands, and they ceased to build the city.	8 E così il Signore li disperse da quel luogo su tutta la terra, e cessarono di fabbricare la città,
9 And for this reason, its name was called ‘Babel,’ because in that place the language of the whole earth became confused. And from then on, the Lord scattered them across the face of every region.	9 alla quale fu dato appunto il nome di Babele, perchè ivi fu confuso il linguaggio di tutta la terra, e di là il Signore li disperse per tutta quanta la terra.
10 These are the generations of Shem. Shem was one hundred years old when he conceived Arphaxad, two years after the great flood.	10 Questa è la posterità di Sem: Sem aveva cento anni, quando generò Arfaxad, due anni dopo il diluvio.
11 And after he conceived Arphaxad, Shem lived for five hundred years, and he conceived sons and daughters.	11 Sem, dopo aver generato Arfaxad, visse cinquecento anni, e generò figlioli e figliole.
12 Next, Arphaxad lived for thirty-five years, and then he conceived Shelah.	12 Arfaxad poi visse trentacinque anni, e generò Sale.
13 And after he conceived Shelah, Arphaxad lived for three hundred and three years, and he conceived sons and daughters.	13 E Arfaxad, dopo aver generato Sale, visse trecentotrè anni, e generò figli e figlie.
14 Likewise, Shelah lived for thirty years, and then he conceived Eber.	14 Sale visse trenta anni, e generò Eber.
15 And after he conceived Eber, Shelah lived for four hundred and three years, and he conceived sons and daughters.	15 E Sale, dopo aver generato Eber, visse quattrocentotré anni, e generò figli e figlie.
16 Then Eber lived for thirty-four years, and he conceived Peleg.	16 E visse Eber trentaquattro anni, e generò Faleg.
17 And after he conceived Peleg, Eber lived for four hundred and thirty years, and he conceived sons and daughters.	17 Ed Eber, dopo aver generato Faleg, visse quattrocentotrenta anni, e generò figli e figlie.
18 Likewise, Peleg lived for thirty years, and then he conceived Reu.	18 E visse Faleg trenta anni e generò Reu.
19 And after he conceived Reu, Peleg lived for two hundred and nine years, and he conceived sons and daughters.	19 E Faleg, dopo aver generato Reu, visse duecentonove anni, e generò figli e figlie.
20 Then Reu lived for thirty-two years, and then he conceived Serug.	20 Reu visse trentadue anni, e generò Sarug.
21 Likewise, after he conceived Serug, Reu lived for two hundred and seven years, and he conceived sons and daughters.	21 E, dopo aver generato Sarug, Reu visse duecentosette anni, e generò figli e figlie,
22 In truth, Serug lived for thirty years, and then he conceived Nahor.	22 Sarug visse trentanni, e generò Nacor.
23 And after he conceived Nahor, Serug lived for two hundred years, and he conceived sons and daughters.	23 E Sarug, dopo aver generato Nacor, visse duecento anni, e generò figli e figlie.
24 And so Nahor lived for twenty-nine years, and then he conceived Terah.	24 E visse Nacor ventinove anni, e generò Tare.
25 And after he conceived Terah, Nahor lived for one hundred and nineteen years, and he conceived sons and daughters.	25 E visse Nacor, dopo aver generato Tare, centodiciannove anni, e generò figli e figlie.
26 And Terah lived for seventy years, and then he conceived Abram, and Nahor, and Haran.	26 E visse Tare settanta anni e generò Abramo, Nacor ed Aran.
27 And these are the generations of Terah. Terah conceived Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Next Haran conceived Lot.	27 Ecco la posterità di Tare: Tare generò Abramo, Nacor ed Aran. Aran poi generò Lot,
28 And Haran died before his father Terah, in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldeans.	28 e morì prima di Tare suo padre, nella terra dove era nato, in Ur dei Caldei.
29 Then Abram and Nahor took wives. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai. And the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.	29 E Abramo e Nacor si ammogliarono: la moglie di Abramo aveva nome Sarai, quella di Nacor aveva nome Melca, ed era figlia di Aran, che era padre di Melca e di Iesca.
30 But Sarai was barren and had no children.	30 Ma Sarai era sterile e non aveva figli.
31 And so Terah took his son Abram, and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and he led them away from Ur of the Chaldeans, to go into the land of Canaan. And they approached as far as Haran, and they dwelt there.	31 Pertanto Tare prese Abramo suo figliolo, e Lot, figlio del suo figlio, cioè di Aran, e Sarai sua nuora, moglie d'Abramo suo figliolo, e li condusse via da Ur dei Caldei, per andare nella terra di Canaan; ma giunti a Haran, vi abitarono.
32 And the days of Terah that passed were two hundred and five years, and then he died in Haran.	32 E Tare visse duecentocinque anni e morì in Haran.
