Now the earth was of one language and of the same speech.1 Tutta la terra aveva un’unica lingua e uniche parole.
And when they were advancing from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt in it.2 Emigrando dall’oriente, gli uomini capitarono in una pianura nella regione di Sinar e vi si stabilirono.
And each one said to his neighbor, “Come, let us make bricks, and bake them with fire.” And they had bricks instead of stones, and pitch instead of mortar.3 Si dissero l’un l’altro: «Venite, facciamoci mattoni e cuociamoli al fuoco». Il mattone servì loro da pietra e il bitume da malta.
And they said: “Come, let us make a city and a tower, so that its height may reach to heaven. And let us make our name famous before we are divided into all the lands.”4 Poi dissero: «Venite, costruiamoci una città e una torre, la cui cima tocchi il cielo, e facciamoci un nome, per non disperderci su tutta la terra».
Then the Lord descended to see the city and the tower, which the sons of Adam were building.5 Ma il Signore scese a vedere la città e la torre che i figli degli uomini stavano costruendo.
And he said: “Behold, the people are united, and all have one tongue. And since they have begun to do this, they will not desist from their plans, until they have completed their work.6 Il Signore disse: «Ecco, essi sono un unico popolo e hanno tutti un’unica lingua; questo è l’inizio della loro opera, e ora quanto avranno in progetto di fare non sarà loro impossibile.
Therefore, come, let us descend, and in that place confound their tongue, so that they may not listen, each one to the voice of his neighbor.”7 Scendiamo dunque e confondiamo la loro lingua, perché non comprendano più l’uno la lingua dell’altro».
And so the Lord divided them from that place into all the lands, and they ceased to build the city.8 Il Signore li disperse di là su tutta la terra ed essi cessarono di costruire la città.
And for this reason, its name was called ‘Babel,’ because in that place the language of the whole earth became confused. And from then on, the Lord scattered them across the face of every region.9 Per questo la si chiamò Babele, perché là il Signore confuse la lingua di tutta la terra e di là il Signore li disperse su tutta la terra.
These are the generations of Shem. Shem was one hundred years old when he conceived Arphaxad, two years after the great flood.10 Questa è la discendenza di Sem: Sem aveva cento anni quando generò Arpacsàd, due anni dopo il diluvio;
And after he conceived Arphaxad, Shem lived for five hundred years, and he conceived sons and daughters.11 Sem, dopo aver generato Arpacsàd, visse cinquecento anni e generò figli e figlie.
Next, Arphaxad lived for thirty-five years, and then he conceived Shelah.12 Arpacsàd aveva trentacinque anni quando generò Selach;
And after he conceived Shelah, Arphaxad lived for three hundred and three years, and he conceived sons and daughters.13 Arpacsàd, dopo aver generato Selach, visse quattrocentotré anni e generò figli e figlie.
Likewise, Shelah lived for thirty years, and then he conceived Eber.14 Selach aveva trent’anni quando generò Eber;
And after he conceived Eber, Shelah lived for four hundred and three years, and he conceived sons and daughters.15 Selach, dopo aver generato Eber, visse quattrocentotré anni e generò figli e figlie.
Then Eber lived for thirty-four years, and he conceived Peleg.16 Eber aveva trentaquattro anni quando generò Peleg;
And after he conceived Peleg, Eber lived for four hundred and thirty years, and he conceived sons and daughters.17 Eber, dopo aver generato Peleg, visse quattrocentotrenta anni e generò figli e figlie.
Likewise, Peleg lived for thirty years, and then he conceived Reu.18 Peleg aveva trent’anni quando generò Reu;
And after he conceived Reu, Peleg lived for two hundred and nine years, and he conceived sons and daughters.19 Peleg, dopo aver generato Reu, visse duecentonove anni e generò figli e figlie.
Then Reu lived for thirty-two years, and then he conceived Serug.20 Reu aveva trentadue anni quando generò Serug;
Likewise, after he conceived Serug, Reu lived for two hundred and seven years, and he conceived sons and daughters.21 Reu, dopo aver generato Serug, visse duecentosette anni e generò figli e figlie.
In truth, Serug lived for thirty years, and then he conceived Nahor.22 Serug aveva trent’anni quando generò Nacor;
And after he conceived Nahor, Serug lived for two hundred years, and he conceived sons and daughters.23 Serug, dopo aver generato Nacor, visse duecento anni e generò figli e figlie.
And so Nahor lived for twenty-nine years, and then he conceived Terah.24 Nacor aveva ventinove anni quando generò Terach;
And after he conceived Terah, Nahor lived for one hundred and nineteen years, and he conceived sons and daughters.25 Nacor, dopo aver generato Terach, visse centodiciannove anni e generò figli e figlie.
And Terah lived for seventy years, and then he conceived Abram, and Nahor, and Haran.26 Terach aveva settant’anni quando generò Abram, Nacor e Aran.
And these are the generations of Terah. Terah conceived Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Next Haran conceived Lot.27 Questa è la discendenza di Terach: Terach generò Abram, Nacor e Aran; Aran generò Lot.
And Haran died before his father Terah, in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldeans.28 Aran poi morì alla presenza di suo padre Terach nella sua terra natale, in Ur dei Caldei.
Then Abram and Nahor took wives. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai. And the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.29 Abram e Nacor presero moglie; la moglie di Abram si chiamava Sarài e la moglie di Nacor Milca, che era figlia di Aran, padre di Milca e padre di Isca.
But Sarai was barren and had no children.30 Sarài era sterile e non aveva figli.
And so Terah took his son Abram, and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and he led them away from Ur of the Chaldeans, to go into the land of Canaan. And they approached as far as Haran, and they dwelt there.31 Poi Terach prese Abram, suo figlio, e Lot, figlio di Aran, figlio cioè di suo figlio, e Sarài sua nuora, moglie di Abram suo figlio, e uscì con loro da Ur dei Caldei per andare nella terra di Canaan. Arrivarono fino a Carran e vi si stabilirono.
And the days of Terah that passed were two hundred and five years, and then he died in Haran.32 La vita di Terach fu di duecentocinque anni; Terach morì a Carran.
