Genesis 11

Now the earth was of one language and of the same speech.1 Sur toute la terre on parlait la même langue, on se servait des mêmes mots.
And when they were advancing from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt in it.2 Comme les hommes se dirigeaient vers l’orient, ils atteignirent une plaine au pays de Chinéar et s’y installèrent.
And each one said to his neighbor, “Come, let us make bricks, and bake them with fire.”
And they said: “Come, let us make a city and a tower, so that its height may reach to heaven. And let us make our name famous before we are divided into all the lands.”4 Ils dirent encore: “Venez donc! Construisons-nous une ville, avec une tour dont le sommet sera dans le ciel et qui nous fera un nom. Cela nous évitera de nous disperser sur toute la surface de la terre.”
Then the Lord descended to see the city and the tower, which the sons of Adam were building.5 Yahvé descendit pour voir la ville et la tour que bâtissaient les hommes,
And he said: “Behold, the people are united, and all have one tongue. And since they have begun to do this, they will not desist from their plans, until they have completed their work.6 et il dit: “Voici qu’ils ne forment tous qu’un seul peuple, avec une même langue; s’ils commencent ainsi, aucun projet désormais ne leur sera impossible.
Therefore, come, let us descend, and in that place confound their tongue, so that they may not listen, each one to the voice of his neighbor.”7 Allons, descendons, et ici-même mettons la confusion dans leur langage pour qu’ils ne comprennent plus le langage les uns des autres.”
And so the Lord divided them from that place into all the lands, and they ceased to build the city.8 De cette façon Yahvé les dispersa sur la surface de toute la terre et ils cessèrent de construire la ville.
And for this reason, its name was called ‘Babel,’ because in that place the language of the whole earth became confused. And from then on, the Lord scattered them across the face of every region.9 C’est pour cela qu’on lui donna le nom de Babel (c’est-à-dire: Confusion).
These are the generations of Shem. Shem was one hundred years old when he conceived Arphaxad, two years after the great flood.10 Voici la descendance de Sem.
And after he conceived Arphaxad, Shem lived for five hundred years, and he conceived sons and daughters.11 Après la naissance d’Arpakchad, Sem vécut encore 500 ans, il engendra des fils et des filles.
Next, Arphaxad lived for thirty-five years, and then he conceived Shelah.12 À l’âge de 35 ans, Arpakchad engendra Chéla.
And after he conceived Shelah, Arphaxad lived for three hundred and three years, and he conceived sons and daughters.13 Après la naissance de Chéla, Arpakchad vécut encore 403 ans, il engendra des fils et des filles.
Likewise, Shelah lived for thirty years, and then he conceived Eber.14 À l’âge de 30 ans, Chéla engendra Éber.
And after he conceived Eber, Shelah lived for four hundred and three years, and he conceived sons and daughters.15 Après la naissance d’Éber, Chéla vécut encore 403 ans, il engendra des fils et des filles.
Then Eber lived for thirty-four years, and he conceived Peleg.16 À l’âge de 34 ans, Éber engendra Péleg.
And after he conceived Peleg, Eber lived for four hundred and thirty years, and he conceived sons and daughters.17 Après la naissance de Péleg, Éber vécut encore 430 ans, il engendra des fils et des filles.
Likewise, Peleg lived for thirty years, and then he conceived Reu.18 À l’âge de 30 ans, Péleg engendra Réou.
And after he conceived Reu, Peleg lived for two hundred and nine years, and he conceived sons and daughters.19 Après la naissance de Réou, Péleg vécut encore 209 ans, il engendra des fils et des filles.
Then Reu lived for thirty-two years, and then he conceived Serug.20 À l’âge de 32 ans, Réou engendra Séroug.
Likewise, after he conceived Serug, Reu lived for two hundred and seven years, and he conceived sons and daughters.21 Après la naissance de Séroug, Réou vécut encore 207 ans, il engendra des fils et des filles.
In truth, Serug lived for thirty years, and then he conceived Nahor.22 À l’âge de 30 ans, Séroug engendra Nahor.
And after he conceived Nahor, Serug lived for two hundred years, and he conceived sons and daughters.23 Après la naissance de Nahor, Séroug vécut encore 200 ans, il engendra des fils et des filles.
And so Nahor lived for twenty-nine years, and then he conceived Terah.24 À l’âge de 29 ans, Nahor engendra Térah.
And after he conceived Terah, Nahor lived for one hundred and nineteen years, and he conceived sons and daughters.25 Après la naissance de Térah, Nahor vécut encore 119 ans, il engendra des fils et des filles.
And Terah lived for seventy years, and then he conceived Abram, and Nahor, and Haran.26 À l’âge de 70 ans, Térah engendra Abram, Nahor et Harân.
And these are the generations of Terah. Terah conceived Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Next Haran conceived Lot.27 Voici la descendance de Térah: Térah engendra Abram, Nahor et Harân. Harân engendra Lot.
And Haran died before his father Terah, in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldeans.28 Harân mourut quand son père Térah vivait encore, dans son pays natal: Our des Kaldéens.
Then Abram and Nahor took wives. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai. And the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.29 Abram et Nahor se marièrent.
But Sarai was barren and had no children.30 Or Saraï était stérile, elle n’avait pas d’enfant.
And so Terah took his son Abram, and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and he led them away from Ur of the Chaldeans, to go into the land of Canaan. And they approached as far as Haran, and they dwelt there.31 Térah prit son fils Abram, son petit-fils Lot, fils de Harân et sa belle-fille Saraï, femme d’Abram.
And the days of Terah that passed were two hundred and five years, and then he died in Haran.32 Le total des années que vécut Térah fut de 205 ans, après quoi il mourut à Harrân.
