Now the earth was of one language and of the same speech.1 Tout le monde se servait d'une même langue et des mêmes mots.
And when they were advancing from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt in it.2 Comme les hommes se déplaçaient à l'orient, ils trouvèrent une vallée au pays de Shinéar et ils s'yétablirent.
And each one said to his neighbor, “Come, let us make bricks, and bake them with fire.” And they had bricks instead of stones, and pitch instead of mortar.3 Ils se dirent l'un à l'autre: "Allons! Faisons des briques et cuisons-les au feu!" La brique leur servitde pierre et le bitume leur servit de mortier.
And they said: “Come, let us make a city and a tower, so that its height may reach to heaven. And let us make our name famous before we are divided into all the lands.”4 Ils dirent: "Allons! Bâtissons-nous une ville et une tour dont le sommet pénètre les cieux! Faisons-nous un nom et ne soyons pas dispersés sur toute la terre!"
Then the Lord descended to see the city and the tower, which the sons of Adam were building.5 Or Yahvé descendit pour voir la ville et la tour que les hommes avaient bâties.
And he said: “Behold, the people are united, and all have one tongue. And since they have begun to do this, they will not desist from their plans, until they have completed their work.6 Et Yahvé dit: "Voici que tous font un seul peuple et parlent une seule langue, et tel est le début deleurs entreprises!Maintenant, aucun dessein ne sera irréalisable pour eux.
Therefore, come, let us descend, and in that place confound their tongue, so that they may not listen, each one to the voice of his neighbor.”7 Allons! Descendons! Et là, confondons leur langage pour qu'ils ne s'entendent plus les uns lesautres."
And so the Lord divided them from that place into all the lands, and they ceased to build the city.8 Yahvé les dispersa de là sur toute la face de la terre et ils cessèrent de bâtir la ville.
And for this reason, its name was called ‘Babel,’ because in that place the language of the whole earth became confused. And from then on, the Lord scattered them across the face of every region.9 Aussi la nomma-t-on Babel, car c'est là que Yahvé confondit le langage de tous les habitants de laterre et c'est de là qu'illes dispersa sur toute la face de la terre.
These are the generations of Shem. Shem was one hundred years old when he conceived Arphaxad, two years after the great flood.10 Voici la descendance de Sem: Quand Sem eut cent ans, il engendra Arpakshad, deux ans après ledéluge.
And after he conceived Arphaxad, Shem lived for five hundred years, and he conceived sons and daughters.11 Après la naissance d'Arpakshad, Sem vécut 500 ans et il engendra des fils et des filles.
Next, Arphaxad lived for thirty-five years, and then he conceived Shelah.12 Quand Arpakshad eut 35 ans, il engendra Shélah.
And after he conceived Shelah, Arphaxad lived for three hundred and three years, and he conceived sons and daughters.13 Après la naissance de Shélah, Arpakshad vécut 403 ans et ilengendra des fils et des filles.
Likewise, Shelah lived for thirty years, and then he conceived Eber.14 Quand Shélah eut 30 ans, il engendra Eber.
And after he conceived Eber, Shelah lived for four hundred and three years, and he conceived sons and daughters.15 Après la naissance de Eber, Shélah vécut 403 ans et il engendra des fils et des filles.
Then Eber lived for thirty-four years, and he conceived Peleg.16 Quand Eber eut 34 ans, il engendra Péleg.
And after he conceived Peleg, Eber lived for four hundred and thirty years, and he conceived sons and daughters.17 Après la naissance de Péleg, Eber vécut 430 ans et il engendra des fils et des filles.
Likewise, Peleg lived for thirty years, and then he conceived Reu.18 Quand Péleg eut 30 ans, il engendra Réu.
And after he conceived Reu, Peleg lived for two hundred and nine years, and he conceived sons and daughters.19 Après la naissance de Réu, Péleg vécut 209 ans et il engendra des fils et des filles.
Then Reu lived for thirty-two years, and then he conceived Serug.20 Quand Réu eut 32 ans, il engendra Serug.
Likewise, after he conceived Serug, Reu lived for two hundred and seven years, and he conceived sons and daughters.21 Après la naissance de Serug, Réu vécut 207 ans et il engendra des fils et des filles.
In truth, Serug lived for thirty years, and then he conceived Nahor.22 Quand Serug eut 30 ans, il engendra Nahor.
And after he conceived Nahor, Serug lived for two hundred years, and he conceived sons and daughters.23 Après la naissance de Nahor, Serug vécut 200 ans et il engendra des fils et des filles.
And so Nahor lived for twenty-nine years, and then he conceived Terah.24 Quand Nahor eut 29 ans, il engendra Térah.
And after he conceived Terah, Nahor lived for one hundred and nineteen years, and he conceived sons and daughters.25 Après la naissance de Térah, Nahor vécut 119 ans et ilengendra des fils et des filles.
And Terah lived for seventy years, and then he conceived Abram, and Nahor, and Haran.26 Quand Térah eut 70 ans, il engendra Abram, Nahor et Harân.
And these are the generations of Terah. Terah conceived Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Next Haran conceived Lot.27 Voici la descendance de Térah: Térah engendra Abram, Nahor et Harân. Harân engendra Lot.
And Haran died before his father Terah, in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldeans.28 Harân mourut en présence de son père Térah dans son pays natal, Ur des Chaldéens.
Then Abram and Nahor took wives. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai. And the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.29 Abram et Nahor se marièrent: la femme d'Abram s'appelait Saraï; la femme de Nahor s'appelaitMilka, fille de Harân, quiétait le père de Milka et de Yiska.
But Sarai was barren and had no children.30 Or Saraï était stérile: elle n'avait pas d'enfant.
And so Terah took his son Abram, and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and he led them away from Ur of the Chaldeans, to go into the land of Canaan. And they approached as far as Haran, and they dwelt there.31 Térah prit son fils Abram, son petit-fils Lot, fils de Harân, et sa bru Saraï, femme d'Abram. Il lesfit sortir d'Ur des Chaldéens pour aller au pays de Canaan, mais, arrivés à Harân, ils s'y établirent.
And the days of Terah that passed were two hundred and five years, and then he died in Haran.32 La durée de la vie de Térah fut de 205 ans, puis il mourut à Harân.
