CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINSAGRADA BIBLIA
Now the earth was of one language and of the same speech.1 Toda a terra tinha uma só língua, e servia-se das mesmas palavras.
And when they were advancing from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt in it.2 Alguns homens, partindo para o oriente, encontraram na terra de Senaar uma planície onde se estabeleceram.
And each one said to his neighbor, “Come, let us make bricks, and bake them with fire.” And they had bricks instead of stones, and pitch instead of mortar.3 E disseram uns aos outros: "Vamos, façamos tijolos e cozamo-los no fogo." Serviram-se de tijolos em vez de pedras, e de betume em lugar de argamassa.
And they said: “Come, let us make a city and a tower, so that its height may reach to heaven. And let us make our name famous before we are divided into all the lands.”4 Depois disseram: "Vamos, façamos para nós uma cidade e uma torre cujo cimo atinja os céus. Tornemos assim célebre o nosso nome, para que não sejamos dispersos pela face de toda a terra."
Then the Lord descended to see the city and the tower, which the sons of Adam were building.5 Mas o senhor desceu para ver a cidade e a torre que construíram os filhos dos homens.
And he said: “Behold, the people are united, and all have one tongue. And since they have begun to do this, they will not desist from their plans, until they have completed their work.6 "Eis que são um só povo, disse ele, e falam uma só língua: se começam assim, nada futuramente os impedirá de executarem todos os seus empreendimentos.
Therefore, come, let us descend, and in that place confound their tongue, so that they may not listen, each one to the voice of his neighbor.”7 Vamos: desçamos para lhes confundir a linguagem, de sorte que já não se compreendam um ao outro."
And so the Lord divided them from that place into all the lands, and they ceased to build the city.8 Foi dali que o Senhor os dispersou daquele lugar pela face de toda a terra, e cessaram a construção da cidade.
And for this reason, its name was called ‘Babel,’ because in that place the language of the whole earth became confused. And from then on, the Lord scattered them across the face of every region.9 Por isso deram-lhe o nome de Babel, porque ali o Senhor confundiu a linguagem de todos os habitantes da terra, e dali os dispersou sobre a face de toda a terra.
These are the generations of Shem. Shem was one hundred years old when he conceived Arphaxad, two years after the great flood.10 Eis a descendência de Sem: Sem, com a idade de cem anos, gerou Arfaxad, dois anos depois do dilúvio.
And after he conceived Arphaxad, Shem lived for five hundred years, and he conceived sons and daughters.11 Depois do Nascimento de Arfaxad, Sem viveu ainda quinhentos anos, e gerou filhos e filhas.
Next, Arphaxad lived for thirty-five years, and then he conceived Shelah.12 Arfaxad, com a idade de trinta e cinco anos, gerou Salé.
And after he conceived Shelah, Arphaxad lived for three hundred and three years, and he conceived sons and daughters.13 Após o nascimento de Salé, Arfaxad viveu ainda quatrocentos anos, e gerou filhos e filhas.
Likewise, Shelah lived for thirty years, and then he conceived Eber.14 Salé, com a idade de trinta anos, gerou Heber.
And after he conceived Eber, Shelah lived for four hundred and three years, and he conceived sons and daughters.15 Após o nascimento de Heber, Salé viveu ainda quatrocentos anos, e gerou filhos e filhas.
Then Eber lived for thirty-four years, and he conceived Peleg.16 Heber, com a idade de trinta e quatro anos, gerou Faleg.
And after he conceived Peleg, Eber lived for four hundred and thirty years, and he conceived sons and daughters.17 Após o nascimento de Faleg, Heber viveu ainda quatrocentos anos, e gerou filhos e filhas.
Likewise, Peleg lived for thirty years, and then he conceived Reu.18 Faleg, com a idade de trinta anos, gerou Reu.
And after he conceived Reu, Peleg lived for two hundred and nine years, and he conceived sons and daughters.19 Após o nascimento de Reu, Faleg viveu ainda duzentos e nove anos, e gerou filhos e filhas.
Then Reu lived for thirty-two years, and then he conceived Serug.20 Reu, com a idade de trinta e dois anos, gerou Sarug.
Likewise, after he conceived Serug, Reu lived for two hundred and seven years, and he conceived sons and daughters.21 Após o nascimento de Sarug, Reu viveu ainda duzentos e sete anos, e gerou filhos e filhas.
In truth, Serug lived for thirty years, and then he conceived Nahor.22 Sarug, com a idade de trinta anos, gerou Nacor.
And after he conceived Nahor, Serug lived for two hundred years, and he conceived sons and daughters.23 Após o nascimento de Nacor, Sarug viveu ainda duzentos anos, e gerou filhos e filhas.
And so Nahor lived for twenty-nine years, and then he conceived Terah.24 Nacor, com a idade de vinte e nove anos, gerou Taré.
And after he conceived Terah, Nahor lived for one hundred and nineteen years, and he conceived sons and daughters.25 Após o nascimento de Taré, Nacor viveu ainda cento e dezenove anos, e gerou filhos e filhas.
And Terah lived for seventy years, and then he conceived Abram, and Nahor, and Haran.26 Taré, com a idade de setenta anos, gerou Abrão, Nacor e Arão.
And these are the generations of Terah. Terah conceived Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Next Haran conceived Lot.27 Eis a descendência de Taré: Taré gerou Abrão, Nacor e Arão.
And Haran died before his father Terah, in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldeans.28 Arão gerou Lot. Arão morreu em presença de Taré, seu pai, em Ur da Caldéia, sua terra natal.
Then Abram and Nahor took wives. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai. And the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.29 Abrão e Nacor casaram-se: a mulher de Abrão chamava-se Sarai, e a de Nacor, Melca, filha de Arão, pai de Melca e de Jesca.
But Sarai was barren and had no children.30 Sarai era estéril, e não tinha filhos.
And so Terah took his son Abram, and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and he led them away from Ur of the Chaldeans, to go into the land of Canaan. And they approached as far as Haran, and they dwelt there.31 Taré tomou seu filho Abrão, seu neto Lot, filho de Arão, e Sarai, sua nora, mulher de Abrão, seu filho, e partiu com eles de Ur da Caldéia, indo para a terra de Canaã. Chegados a Harã, estabeleceram-se ali.
And the days of Terah that passed were two hundred and five years, and then he died in Haran.32 Todo o tempo da vida de Taré foi de duzentos e cinco anos; e morreu em Harã.
