Proverbi 20

1 Il vino è schernitore, e la cervogia è tumultuante; E chiunque ne è vago non è savio	1 Wine is arrogant, strong drink is riotous; none who goes astray for it is wise.
2 Il terrore del re è come il ruggito del leoncello; Chi lo provoca ad indegnazione pecca contro a sè stesso	2 The dread of the king is as when a lion roars; he who incurs his anger forfeits his life.
3 Egli è gloria all’uomo di rimanersi di contesa; Ma chiunque è stolto si fa schernire	3 It is honorable for a man to shun strife, while every fool starts a quarrel.
4 Il pigro non ara per cagion del freddo; E poi nella ricolta va accattando, e non trova nulla	4 In seedtime the sluggard plows not; when he looks for the harvest, it is not there.
5 Il consiglio nel cuor dell’uomo è un’acqua profonda; E l’uomo intendente l’attignerà	5 The intention in the human heart is like water far below the surface, but the man of intelligence draws it forth.
6 Il più degli uomini predicano ciascuno la sua benignità; Ma chi troverà un uomo verace?	6 Many are declared to be men of virtue: but who can find one worthy of trust?
7 I figliuoli del giusto, che cammina nella sua integrità, Saranno beati dopo di lui	7 When a man walks in integrity and justice, happy are his children after him!
8 Il re, sedendo sopra il trono del giudicio, Dissipa ogni male con gli occhi suoi	8 A king seated on the throne of judgment dispels all evil with his glance.
9 Chi può dire: Io ho purgato il mio cuore, Io son netto del mio peccato?	9 Who can say, "I have made my heart clean, I am cleansed of my sin"?
10 Doppio peso, e doppio staio, Sono amendue cosa abbominevole al Signore	10 Varying weights, varying measures, are both an abomination to the LORD.
11 Fin da fanciullo l’uomo è riconosciuto da’ suoi atti, Se egli sarà puro, e se le sue opere saranno diritte	11 Even by his manners the child betrays whether his conduct is innocent and right.
12 Il Signore ha fatte amendue queste cose: E l’orecchio che ode, e l’occhio che vede	12 The ear that hears, and the eye that sees-- the LORD has made them both.
13 Non amare il sonno, che tu non impoverisca; Tieni gli occhi aperti, e sarai saziato di pane	13 Love not sleep, lest you be reduced to poverty; eyes wide open mean abundant food.
14 Chi compera dice: Egli è cattivo, egli è cattivo; Ma quando se n’è andato, allora si vanta	14 "Bad, bad!" says the buyer; but once he has gone his way, he boasts.
15 Vi è dell’oro, e delle perle assai; Ma le labbra di scienza sono un vaso prezioso	15 Like gold or a wealth of corals, wise lips are a precious ornament.
16 Prendi pure il vestimento di chi ha fatta sicurtà per lo strano; Prendi pegno da lui per gli stranieri	16 Take his garment who becomes surety for another, and for strangers yield it up!
17 Il pane acquistato con frode è soave all’uomo; Ma poi la sua bocca si trova piena di ghiaia	17 The bread of deceit is sweet to a man, but afterward his mouth will be filled with gravel.
18 I disegni son renduti stabili con consiglio; Fa’ dunque la guerra con prudenti deliberazioni	18 Plans made after advice succeed; so with wise guidance wage your war.
19 Chi va sparlando palesa il segreto: Non rimescolarti adunque con chi è allettante di labbra	19 A newsmonger reveals secrets; so have nothing to do with a babbler!
20 La lampana di chi maledice suo padre, o sua madre, Sarà spenta nelle più oscure tenebre	20 If one curses his father or mother, his lamp will go out at the coming of darkness.
21 L’eredità acquistata di subito da principio Non sarà benedetta alla fine	21 Possessions gained hastily at the outset will in the end not be blessed.
22 Non dire: Io renderò il male; Aspetta il Signore, ed egli ti salverà	22 Say not, "I will repay evil!" Trust in the LORD and he will help you.

24 I passi dell’uomo sono dal Signore; E come intenderà l’uomo la sua via?	24 Man's steps are from the LORD; how, then, can a man understand his way?
25 Dire inconsideratamente: Questa è cosa sacra; E riflettere dopo aver fatti i voti, è un laccio all’uomo	25 Rashly to pledge a sacred gift is a trap for a man, or to regret a vow once made.
26 Il re savio dissipa gli empi, E rimena la ruota sopra loro	26 A wise king winnows the wicked, and threshes them under the cartwheel.
27 L’anima dell’uomo è una lampana del Signore, Che investiga tutti i segreti nascondimenti del ventre	27 A lamp from the LORD is the breath of man; it searches through all his inmost being.
28 Benignità e verità guardano il re; Ed egli ferma il suo trono per benignità	28 Kindness and piety safeguard the king, and he upholds his throne by justice.
29 La forza de’ giovani è la lor gloria; E l’onor de’ vecchi è la canutezza	29 The glory of young men is their strength, and the dignity of old men is gray hair.
30 I lividori delle battiture, e le percosse che penetrano addentro nel ventre Sono una lisciatura nel malvagio	30 Evil is cleansed away by bloody lashes, and a scourging to the inmost being.
