| 2 Ouvi, vos peço, as minhas palavras, dai-me, ao menos, esta consolação. | 2 I beseech you to hear my words and to do penance. |
| 3 Sofrei que eu fale, e depois, se vos parecer, zombai das minhas palavras. | 3 Permit me, and I will speak, and afterwards, if you see fit, you can laugh at my words. |
| 4 Porventura é com algum homem a minha disputa? Como não hei-de impacientar-me? | 4 Is my dispute against man, so that I would have no reason to be discouraged? |
| 5 Olhai para mim, e pasmai, e ponde a mão sobre a vossa boca; | 5 Listen to me and be astonished, and place a finger over your mouth. |
| 6 e eu mesmo, quando me recordo, me assombro, e estremece toda a minha carne. | 6 As for me, when I think it over, I am afraid, and trembling convulses my body. |
| 7 Por que razão vivem os impios e envelhecem, aumentando á sua força? | 7 Why then do the impious live, having been lifted up and strengthened with riches? |
| 8 Seus filhos conservam-se diante deles, uma multidão de parentes e de netos está na sua presença. | 8 They see their offspring continue before them: a commotion of close relatives and of children’s children in their sight. |
| 9 As suas casas estão seguras e em paz, a vara de Deus não os fere. | 9 Their houses have been secure and peaceable, and there is no staff of God over them. |
| 10 Os seus louros são sempre fecundos, as suas vacas dão à luz e não se lhes malogram as suas crias. | 10 Their cattle have conceived and have not miscarried; their cow has given birth and is not deprived of her newborn. |
| 11 Os seus filhos saem (de casa) como manadas, os seus pequenos saltam e brincam. | 11 Their little ones go out like a flock, and their children jump around playfully. |
| 12 Cantam ao som do tímpano e da citara, e alegram-se ao som da flauta. | 12 They take up the timbrel and the lyre, and they rejoice at the sound of the organ. |
| 13 Passam os seus dias em delicias, e num momento descem a o sepulcro. | 13 Their days are prolonged in wealth, yet, in an instant, they descend into hell. |
| 14 Estes são os que disseram a Deus: Retira-te de nós, pois não queremos saber nada dos teus caminhos. | 14 Who has said to God, “Depart from us, for we do not want the knowledge of your ways. |
| 15 Quem é o Omnipotente para que o sirvamos? Que nos aproveita que lhe façamos orações? | 15 Who is the Almighty that we should serve him? And how is it helpful to us if we pray to him?” |
| 16 Mas, porque não estão na sua mão os seus bens, longe esteja de mim o modo de pensar dos impios. | 16 It is true that their good things are not in their power. May the counsel of the impious be far from me! |
| 17 Quantas vezes se apagará a lucerna dos impios, lhes sobrevirá uma inundação (de males), e (Deus) na sua ira lhes repartirá as dores? | 17 How often will the lamp of the wicked be extinguished, and a deluge overtake them, and how often will he distribute the afflictions of his wrath? |
| 18 Serão como as palhas ao soprar do vento, e como a cinza espalhada, pelo redemoinho. | 18 They will be like chaff before the face of the wind, and like ashes that the whirlwind scatters. |
| 19 (Vós dizeis que) Deus reservará para os filhos a pena (merecida pelos pecados) do pai. Mas que Deus lhe dê o pago a ele, que ele próprio o tenha; | 19 God will preserve the grief of the father for his sons, and, when he repays, then he will understand. |
| 20 que os seus olhos vejam a própria ruína, e ele beba do furor do Omnipotente. | 20 His eyes will see his own destruction, and he will drink from the wrath of the Almighty. |
| 21 Pois, que se lhe dá a ele do que será feito da sua casa depois da sua morte, depois de serem cortados os seus dias? | 21 For what does he care what happens to his house after him, or if the number of its months are reduced by half? |
| 22 Porventura poderá alguém ensinar alguma coisa a Deus, que julga os seres mais elevados? | 22 Can anyone teach holy knowledge to God, who judges the exalted? |
| 23 Um morre em plena prosperidade, tranqüilo e feliz, | 23 This one dies strong and healthy, rich and happy. |
| 24 com os flancos cobertos de gordura, e a medula dos ossos suculenta; | 24 His gut is full of fat and his bones are moistened with marrow. |
| 25 outro, porém, morre na amargura da sua alma, sem nenhuns bens. | 25 In truth, another dies in bitterness of soul, without any resources. |
| 26 E todavia ambos dormirão igualmente no pó, e os vermes cobrem os dois. | 26 And yet they will sleep together in the dust, and worms will cover them. |
| 27 Eu conheço bem os vossos pensamentos, e os vossos injustos juízos contra mim. | 27 Surely, I know your thoughts and your sinful judgments against me. |
| 28 Vós dizeis: Onde está a casa deste (Job, que era como um) príncipe? Onde estão as tendas dos ímpios? | 28 For you say, “Where is the house of the ruler, and where are the tabernacles of the impious?” |
| 29 Perguntai a qualquer dos viandantes; não podeis desconhecer a resposta que darão. | 29 Ask any passerby whom you wish, and you will realize that he understands these same things: |
| 30 No dia da desgraça, o mau é poupado, no dia da cólera escapa ao castigo. | 30 that the evil-doer is reserved for the day of destruction, and he will be led to the day of wrath. |
| 31 Quem reprova diante dele o seu proceder? Quem lhe dará o pago do mal que fez? | 31 Who will reprove his way to his face, and who will repay him for what he has done? |
| 32 E’ levado (honorificamente) ao sepulcro, e no seu túmulo há paz. | 32 He will be led to the tomb, and he will remain awake in the chaos of the dead. |
| 33 São-lhe leves os torrões do vale; arrasta atrás de si todos os homens, e diante de si uma inumerável multidão. | 33 He has been found acceptable to the banks of the River of Lamentation, and he will draw any man towards him, and there are countless before him. |
| 34 Como pois me consolais em vão, tendo-se visto que as vossas respostas se opõem à verdade? | 34 Therefore, how long will you console me in vain, when your answer is shown to be repugnant to truth? |
