Ad Corinthios I 3

1 Et ego, fratres, non potui vobis loqui quasi spiritualibus, sed quasi carnalibus. Tamquam parvulis in Christo,	1 And so, brothers, I was not able to talk to you as spiritual people; I had to talk to you as people stilliving by your natural inclinations, stil infants in Christ;
2 lac vobis potum dedi, non escam : nondum enim poteratis : sed nec nunc quidem potestis : adhuc enim carnales estis.	2 I fed you with milk and not solid food, for you were not yet able to take it -- and even now, you are stilnot able to,
3 Cum enim sit inter vos zelus, et contentio : nonne carnales estis, et secundum hominem ambulatis ?	3 for you are still living by your natural inclinations. As long as there are jealousy and rivalry among you,that surely means that you are stil living by your natural inclinations and by merely human principles.
4 Cum enim quis dicat : Ego quidem sum Pauli ; alius autem : Ego Apollo : nonne homines estis ? Quid igitur est Apollo ? quid vero Paulus ?	4 While there is one that says, 'I belong to Paul' and another that says, 'I belong to Apol os' are you notbeing only too human?
5 ministri ejus, cui credidistis, et unicuique sicut Dominus dedit.	5 For what is Apollos and what is Paul? The servants through whom you came to believe, and each hasonly what the Lord has given him.
6 Ego plantavi, Apollo rigavit : sed Deus incrementum dedit.	6 I did the planting, Apol os did the watering, but God gave growth.
7 Itaque neque qui plantat est aliquid, neque qui rigat : sed qui incrementum dat, Deus.	7 In this, neither the planter nor the waterer counts for anything; only God, who gives growth.
8 Qui autem plantat, et qui rigat, unum sunt. Unusquisque autem propriam mercedem accipiet, secundum suum laborem.	8 It is al one who does the planting and who does the watering, and each will have the proper pay for thework that he has done.
9 Dei enim sumus adjutores : Dei agricultura estis, Dei ædificatio estis.	9 After all, we do share in God's work; you are God's farm, God's building.
10 Secundum gratiam Dei, quæ data est mihi, ut sapiens architectus fundamentum posui : alius autem superædificat. Unusquisque autem videat quomodo superædificet.	10 By the grace of God which was given to me, I laid the foundations like a trained master-builder, andsomeone else is building on them. Now each one must be careful how he does the building.
11 Fundamentum enim aliud nemo potest ponere præter id quod positum est, quod est Christus Jesus.	11 For nobody can lay down any other foundation than the one which is there already, namely JesusChrist.
12 Si quis autem superædificat super fundamentum hoc, aurum, argentum, lapides pretiosos, ligna, fœnum, stipulam,	12 On this foundation, different people may build in gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay or straw
13 uniuscujusque opus manifestum erit : dies enim Domini declarabit, quia in igne revelabitur : et uniuscujusque opus quale sit, ignis probabit.	13 but each person's handiwork wil be shown for what it is. The Day which dawns in fire will make it clearand the fire itself wil test the quality of each person's work.
14 Si cujus opus manserit quod superædificavit, mercedem accipiet.	14 The one whose work stands up to it wil be given his wages;
15 Si cujus opus arserit, detrimentum patietur : ipse autem salvus erit, sic tamen quasi per ignem.	15 the one whose work is burnt down wil suffer the loss of it, though he himself will be saved; he wil besaved as someone might expect to be saved from a fire.
16 Nescitis quia templum Dei estis, et Spiritus Dei habitat in vobis ?	16 Do you not realise that you are a temple of God with the Spirit of God living in you?
17 Si quis autem templum Dei violaverit, disperdet illum Deus. Templum enim Dei sanctum est, quod estis vos.	17 If anybody should destroy the temple of God, God will destroy that person, because God's temple isholy; and you are that temple.
18 Nemo se seducat : si quis videtur inter vos sapiens esse in hoc sæculo, stultus fiat ut sit sapiens.	18 There is no room for self-delusion. Any one of you who thinks he is wise by worldly standards mustlearn to be a fool in order to be real y wise.
19 Sapientia enim hujus mundi, stultitia est apud Deum. Scriptum est enim : Comprehendam sapientes in astutia eorum.	19 For the wisdom of the world is folly to God. As scripture says: He traps the crafty in the snare of theirown cunning
20 Et iterum : Dominus novit cogitationes sapientium quoniam vanæ sunt.	20 and again: The Lord knows the plans of the wise and how insipid they are.
21 Nemo itaque glorietur in hominibus.	21 So there is to be no boasting about human beings: everything belongs to you,
22 Omnia enim vestra sunt, sive Paulus, sive Apollo, sive Cephas, sive mundus, sive vita, sive mors, sive præsentia, sive futura : omnia enim vestra sunt :	22 whether it is Paul, or Apol os, or Cephas, the world, life or death, the present or the future -- al belongto you;
23 vos autem Christi : Christus autem Dei.	23 but you belong to Christ and Christ belongs to God.
