Ad Corinthios I 1

1 Paulus vocatus Apostolus Jesu Christi per voluntatem Dei, et Sosthenes frater,	1 Paul, cal ed by the wil of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and Sosthenes, our brother,
2 ecclesiæ Dei, quæ est Corinthi, sanctificatis in Christo Jesu, vocatis sanctis, cum omnibus qui invocant nomen Domini nostri Jesu Christi, in omni loco ipsorum et nostro.	2 to the church of God in Corinth, to those who have been consecrated in Christ Jesus and cal ed to beGod's holy people, with al those everywhere who cal on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord as wel asours.
3 Gratia vobis, et pax a Deo Patre nostro, et Domino Jesu Christo.	3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
4 Gratias ago Deo meo semper pro vobis in gratia Dei, quæ data est vobis in Christo Jesu :	4 I am continual y thanking God about you, for the grace of God which you have been given in ChristJesus;
5 quod in omnibus divites facti estis in illo, in omni verbo, et in omni scientia.	5 in him you have been richly endowed in every kind of utterance and knowledge;
6 Sicut testimonium Christi confirmatum est in vobis :	6 so firmly has witness to Christ taken root in you.
7 ita ut nihil vobis desit in ulla gratia, exspectantibus revelationem Domini nostri Jesu Christi,	7 And so you are not lacking in any gift as you wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed;
8 qui et confirmabit vos usque in finem sine crimine, in die adventus Domini nostri Jesu Christi.	8 he will continue to give you strength till the very end, so that you will be irreproachable on the Day ofour Lord Jesus Christ.
9 Fidelis Deus : per quem vocati estis in societatem filii ejus Jesu Christi Domini nostri.	9 You can rely on God, who has called you to be partners with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
10 Obsecro autem vos fratres per nomen Domini nostri Jesu Christi : ut idipsum dicatis omnes, et non sint in vobis schismata : sitis autem perfecti in eodem sensu, et in eadem sententia.	10 Brothers, I urge you, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, not to have factions among yourselves butal to be in agreement in what you profess; so that you are perfectly united in your beliefs and judgements.
11 Significatum est enim mihi de vobis fratres mei ab iis, qui sunt Chloës, quia contentiones sunt inter vos.	11 From what Chloe's people have been telling me about you, brothers, it is clear that there are seriousdifferences among you.
12 Hoc autem dico, quod unusquisque vestrum dicit : Ego quidem sum Pauli : ego autem Apollo : ego vero Cephæ : ego autem Christi.	12 What I mean is this: every one of you is declaring, 'I belong to Paul,' or 'I belong to Apollos,' or 'Ibelong to Cephas,' or 'I belong to Christ.'
13 Divisus est Christus ? numquid Paulus crucifixus est pro vobis ? aut in nomine Pauli baptizati estis ?	13 Has Christ been split up? Was it Paul that was crucified for you, or was it in Paul's name that you werebaptised?
14 Gratias ago Deo, quod neminem vestrum baptizavi, nisi Crispum et Caium :	14 I am thankful I did not baptise any of you, except Crispus and Gaius,
15 ne quis dicat quod in nomine meo baptizati estis.	15 so that no one can say that you were baptised in my name.
16 Baptizavi autem et Stephanæ domum : ceterum nescio si quem alium baptizaverim.	16 Yes, I did baptise the family of Stephanas, too; but besides these I do not think I baptised anyone.
17 Non enim misit me Christus baptizare, sed evangelizare : non in sapientia verbi, ut non evacuetur crux Christi.	17 After al , Christ sent me not to baptise, but to preach the gospel; and not by means of wisdom oflanguage, wise words which would make the cross of Christ pointless.
18 Verbum enim crucis pereuntibus quidem stultitia est : iis autem qui salvi fiunt, id est nobis, Dei virtus est.	18 The message of the cross is fol y for those who are on the way to ruin, but for those of us who are onthe road to salvation it is the power of God.
19 Scriptum est enim : Perdam sapientiam sapientium, et prudentiam prudentium reprobabo.	19 As scripture says: I am going to destroy the wisdom of the wise and bring to nothing theunderstanding of any who understand.
20 Ubi sapiens ? ubi scriba ? ubi conquisitor hujus sæculi ? Nonne stultam fecit Deus sapientiam hujus mundi ?	20 Where are the philosophers? Where are the experts? And where are the debaters of this age? Do younot see how God has shown up human wisdom as fol y?
21 Nam quia in Dei sapientia non cognovit mundus per sapientiam Deum : placuit Deo per stultitiam prædicationis salvos facere credentes.	21 Since in the wisdom of God the world was unable to recognise God through wisdom, it was God's ownpleasure to save believers through the fol y of the gospel.
22 Quoniam et Judæi signa petunt, et Græci sapientiam quærunt :	22 While the Jews demand miracles and the Greeks look for wisdom,
23 nos autem prædicamus Christum crucifixum : Judæis quidem scandalum, gentibus autem stultitiam,	23 we are preaching a crucified Christ: to the Jews an obstacle they cannot get over, to the gentilesfoolishness,
24 ipsis autem vocatis Judæis, atque Græcis Christum Dei virtutem, et Dei sapientiam :	24 but to those who have been cal ed, whether they are Jews or Greeks, a Christ who is both the powerof God and the wisdom of God.
25 quia quod stultum est Dei, sapientius est hominibus : et quod infirmum est Dei, fortius est hominibus.	25 God's fol y is wiser than human wisdom, and God's weakness is stronger than human strength.
26 Videte enim vocationem vestram, fratres, quia non multi sapientes secundum carnem, non multi potentes, non multi nobiles :	26 Consider, brothers, how you were cal ed; not many of you are wise by human standards, not manyinfluential, not many from noble families.
27 sed quæ stulta sunt mundi elegit Deus, ut confundat sapientes : et infirma mundi elegit Deus, ut confundat fortia :	27 No, God chose those who by human standards are fools to shame the wise; he chose those who byhuman standards are weak to shame the strong,
28 et ignobilia mundi, et contemptibilia elegit Deus, et ea quæ non sunt, ut ea quæ sunt destrueret :	28 those who by human standards are common and contemptible -- indeed those who count for nothing-- to reduce to nothing al those that do count for something,
29 ut non glorietur omnis caro in conspectu ejus.	29 so that no human being might feel boastful before God.
30 Ex ipso autem vos estis in Christo Jesu, qui factus est nobis sapientia a Deo, et justitia, et sanctificatio, et redemptio :	30 It is by him that you exist in Christ Jesus, who for us was made wisdom from God, and saving justiceand holiness and redemption.
31 ut quemadmodum scriptum est : Qui gloriatur, in Domino glorietur.	31 As scripture says: If anyone wants to boast, let him boast of the Lord.
