VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Tunc Jesus locutus est ad turbas, et ad discipulos suos,1 Then addressing the crowds and his disciples Jesus said,
dicens : Super cathedram Moysi sederunt scribæ et pharisæi.2 'The scribes and the Pharisees occupy the chair of Moses.
Omnia ergo quæcumque dixerint vobis, servate, et facite : secundum opera vero eorum nolite facere : dicunt enim, et non faciunt.3 You must therefore do and observe what they tell you; but do not be guided by what they do, sincethey do not practise what they preach.
Alligant enim onera gravia, et importabilia, et imponunt in humeros hominum : digito autem suo nolunt ea movere.4 They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on people's shoulders, but wil they lift a finger to move them? Not they!
Omnia vero opera sua faciunt ut videantur ab hominibus : dilatant enim phylacteria sua, et magnificant fimbrias.5 Everything they do is done to attract attention, like wearing broader headbands and longer tassels,
Amant autem primos recubitus in cœnis, et primas cathedras in synagogis,6 like wanting to take the place of honour at banquets and the front seats in the synagogues,
et salutationes in foro, et vocari ab hominibus Rabbi.7 being greeted respectful y in the market squares and having people cal them Rabbi.
Vos autem nolite vocari Rabbi : unus est enim magister vester, omnes autem vos fratres estis.8 'You, however, must not al ow yourselves to be cal ed Rabbi, since you have only one Master, and youare al brothers.
Et patrem nolite vocare vobis super terram : unus est enim pater vester qui in cælis est.9 You must call no one on earth your father, since you have only one Father, and he is in heaven.
Nec vocemini magistri : quia magister vester unus est, Christus.10 Nor must you al ow yourselves to be called teachers, for you have only one Teacher, the Christ.
Qui major est vestrum, erit minister vester.11 The greatest among you must be your servant.
Qui autem se exaltaverit, humiliabitur : et qui se humiliaverit, exaltabitur.
Anyone who raises himself up wil be humbled, and anyone who humbles himself wil be raised up.
Væ autem vobis scribæ et pharisæi hypocritæ, quia clauditis regnum cælorum ante homines ! vos enim non intratis, nec introëuntes sinitis intrare.13 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut up the kingdom of Heaven in people'sfaces, neither going in yourselves nor al owing others to go who want to.
Væ vobis scribæ et pharisæi hypocritæ, quia comeditis domos viduarum, orationes longas orantes ! propter hoc amplius accipietis judicium.14
Væ vobis scribæ et pharisæi hypocritæ, quia circuitis mare, et aridam, ut faciatis unum proselytum, et cum fuerit factus, facitis eum filium gehennæ duplo quam vos.15 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over sea and land to make a singleproselyte, and anyone who becomes one you make twice as fit for hel as you are.
Væ vobis duces cæci, qui dicitis : Quicumque juraverit per templum, nihil est : qui autem juraverit in auro templi, debet.16 'Alas for you, blind guides! You say, "If anyone swears by the Temple, it has no force; but anyonewho swears by the gold of the Temple is bound."
Stulti et cæci : quid enim majus est ? aurum, an templum, quod sanctificat aurum ?17 Fools and blind! For which is of greater value, the gold or the Temple that makes the gold sacred?
Et quicumque juraverit in altari, nihil est : quicumque autem juraverit in dono, quod est super illud, debet.18 Again, "If anyone swears by the altar it has no force; but anyone who swears by the offering on thealtar, is bound."
Cæci : quid enim majus est, donum, an altare, quod sanctificat donum ?19 You blind men! For which is of greater worth, the offering or the altar that makes the offering sacred?
Qui ergo jurat in altari, jurat in eo, et in omnibus quæ super illud sunt.20 Therefore, someone who swears by the altar is swearing by that and by everything on it.
Et quicumque juraverit in templo, jurat in illo, et in eo qui habitat in ipso :21 And someone who swears by the Temple is swearing by that and by the One who dwel s in it.
et qui jurat in cælo, jurat in throno Dei, et in eo qui sedet super eum.22 And someone who swears by heaven is swearing by the throne of God and by the One who is seatedthere.
Væ vobis scribæ et pharisæi hypocritæ, qui decimatis mentham, et anethum, et cyminum, et reliquistis quæ graviora sunt legis, judicium, et misericordiam, et fidem ! hæc oportuit facere, et illa non omittere.23 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You pay your tithe of mint and dill and cumminand have neglected the weightier matters of the Law-justice, mercy, good faith! These you should havepractised, those not neglected.
Duces cæci, excolantes culicem, camelum autem glutientes.24 You blind guides, straining out gnats and swal owing camels!
Væ vobis scribæ et pharisæi hypocritæ, quia mundatis quod deforis est calicis et paropsidis ; intus autem pleni estis rapina et immunditia !25 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of cup and dish and leavethe inside full of extortion and intemperance.
Pharisæe cæce, munda prius quod intus est calicis, et paropsidis, ut fiat id, quod deforis est, mundum.26 Blind Pharisee! Clean the inside of cup and dish first so that it and the outside are both clean.
Væ vobis scribæ et pharisæi hypocritæ, quia similes estis sepulchris dealbatis, quæ a foris parent hominibus speciosa, intus vero pleni sunt ossibus mortuorum, et omni spurcitia !27 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs that lookhandsome on the outside, but inside are ful of the bones of the dead and every kind of corruption.
Sic et vos a foris quidem paretis hominibus justi : intus autem pleni estis hypocrisi et iniquitate.28 In just the same way, from the outside you look upright, but inside you are ful of hypocrisy andlawlessness.
Væ vobis scribæ et pharisæi hypocritæ, qui ædificatis sepulchra prophetarum, et ornatis monumenta justorum,29 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build the sepulchres of the prophets anddecorate the tombs of the upright,
et dicitis : Si fuissemus in diebus patrum nostrorum, non essemus socii eorum in sanguine prophetarum !30 saying, "We would never have joined in shedding the blood of the prophets, had we lived in ourancestors' day."
itaque testimonio estis vobismetipsis, quia filii estis eorum, qui prophetas occiderunt.31 So! Your own evidence tells against you! You are the children of those who murdered the prophets!
Et vos implete mensuram patrum vestrorum.32 Very well then, finish off the work that your ancestors began.
Serpentes, genimina viperarum, quomodo fugietis a judicio gehennæ ?
'You serpents, brood of vipers, how can you escape being condemned to hell?
Ideo ecce ego mitto ad vos prophetas, et sapientes, et scribas, et ex illis occidetis, et crucifigetis, et ex eis flagellabitis in synagogis vestris, et persequemini de civitate in civitatem :34 This is why -- look -- I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some you will slaughterand crucify, some you wil scourge in your synagogues and hunt from town to town;
ut veniat super vos omnis sanguis justus, qui effusus est super terram, a sanguine Abel justi usque ad sanguinem Zachariæ, filii Barachiæ, quem occidistis inter templum et altare.35 and so you wil draw down on yourselves the blood of every upright person that has been shed onearth, from the blood of Abel the holy to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah whom you murdered betweenthe sanctuary and the altar.
Amen dico vobis, venient hæc omnia super generationem istam.36 In truth I tel you, it wil al recoil on this generation.
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, quæ occidis prophetas, et lapidas eos, qui ad te missi sunt, quoties volui congregare filios tuos, quemadmodum gallina congregat pullos suos sub alas, et noluisti ?37 'Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How oftenhave I longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you refused!
Ecce relinquetur vobis domus vestra deserta.38 Look! Your house wil be deserted,
Dico enim vobis, non me videbitis amodo, donec dicatis : Benedictus, qui venit in nomine Domini.39 for, I promise, you shal not see me any more until you are saying: Blessed is he who is coming in thename of the Lord!'
