Jeremiæ 16

VULGATA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Et factum est verbum Domini ad me, dicens :	1 The word of Yahweh was addressed to me as fol ows:
2 Non accipies uxorem, et non erunt tibi filii et filiæ in loco isto.	2 'You are not to marry or have sons and daughters in this place.
3 Quia hæc dicit Dominus super filios et filias qui generantur in loco isto, et super matres eorum, quæ genuerunt eos, et super patres eorum, de quorum stirpe sunt nati in terra hac :	3 For Yahweh says this regarding the sons and daughters to be born in this place, about the motherswho give birth to them, and about the fathers who beget them in this land,
4 Mortibus ægrotationum morientur : non plangentur, et non sepelientur : in sterquilinium super faciem terræ erunt, et gladio et fame consumentur : et erit cadaver eorum in escam volatilibus cæli et bestiis terræ.	4 "They wil die of deadly diseases, unlamented and unburied; they will be like dung spread on theground; they wil meet their end by sword and famine, and their corpses wil be food for the birds of the sky andthe beasts of earth."
5 Hæc enim dicit Dominus : Ne ingrediaris domum convivii, neque vadas ad plangendum, neque consoleris eos, quia abstuli pacem meam a populo isto, dicit Dominus, misericordiam et miserationes.	5 'Yes, Yahweh says this, "Go into no house where there is mourning, do not go and lament or grievewith them; for I have withdrawn my peace from this people, Yahweh declares, and faithful love and pity too.
6 Et morientur grandes et parvi in terra ista : non sepelientur, neque plangentur, et non se incident, neque calvitium fiet pro eis.	6 High or low, they wil die in this country, without burial or lament; there wil be no gashing, no shaving ofthe head for them.
7 Et non frangent inter eos lugenti panem ad consolandum super mortuo, et non dabunt eis potum calicis ad consolandum super patre suo et matre.	7 No bread will be broken for the mourner to comfort him for the dead; no cup of consolation wil beoffered him for his father or his mother.
8 Et domum convivii non ingrediaris, ut sedeas cum eis, et comedas, et bibas.	8 "And do not enter a house where there is feasting, to sit with them and eat and drink.
9 Quia hæc dicit Dominus exercituum, Deus Israël : Ecce ego auferam de loco isto, in oculis vestris, et in diebus vestris, vocem gaudii et vocem lætitiæ, vocem sponsi et vocem sponsæ.	9 For Yahweh Sabaoth, the God of Israel, says this: In this place, before your eyes, in your own days, Iwil silence the shouts of rejoicing and mirth and the voices of bridegroom and bride.
10 Et cum annuntiaveris populo huic omnia verba hæc, et dixerint tibi : Quare locutus est Dominus super nos omne malum grande istud ? quæ iniquitas nostra, et quod peccatum nostrum, quod peccavimus Domino Deo nostro ?	10 "When you tel these people this and they ask you: Why has Yahweh decreed such complete andtotal disaster for us? What have we done wrong? What sin have we committed against Yahweh our God?
11 dices ad eos : Quia dereliquerunt me patres vestri, ait Dominus, et abierunt post deos alienos, et servierunt eis, et adoraverunt eos, et me dereliquerunt, et legem meam non custodierunt.	11 then you are to answer: It is because your ancestors abandoned me, Yahweh declares, and fol owedother gods, and served and worshipped them. They abandoned me and did not keep my Law.
12 Sed et vos pejus operati estis quam patres vestri : ecce enim ambulat unusquisque post pravitatem cordis sui mali, ut me non audiat.	12 And you for your part have behaved even worse than your ancestors. Look, each of you fol ows hisown stubborn and wicked inclinations, without listening to me.
13 Et ejiciam vos de terra hac in terram quam ignoratis, vos et patres vestri : et servietis ibi diis alienis, die ac nocte, qui non dabunt vobis requiem.	13 And so, I shal eject you from this country into a country unknown to you or to your ancestors, andthere you can serve other gods, day and night, for I shal show you no more favour."
14 Propterea ecce dies veniunt, dicit Dominus, et non dicetur ultra : Vivit Dominus qui eduxit filios Israël de terra Ægypti,	14 'Look, the days are coming, Yahweh declares, when people wil no longer say, "As Yahweh lives whobrought the Israelites out of Egypt!"
15 sed : Vivit Dominus qui eduxit filios Israël de terra aquilonis, et de universis terris ad quas ejeci eos : et reducam eos in terram suam, quam dedi patribus eorum.	15 but, "As Yahweh lives who brought the Israelites back from the land of the north and al the countriesto which he had driven them." I shal bring them back to the very soil I gave their ancestors.'
16 Ecce ego mittam piscatores multos, dicit Dominus, et piscabuntur eos : et post hæc mittam eis multos venatores, et venabuntur eos de omni monte, et de omni colle, et de cavernis petrarum.	16 'Watch, I shal send for many fishermen, Yahweh declares, and these wil fish them up; next, I shalsend for many huntsmen, and these wil hunt them out of every mountain, every hil , and out of the holes in therocks.
17 Quia oculi mei super omnes vias eorum : non sunt absconditæ a facie mea, et non fuit occultata iniquitas eorum ab oculis meis.	17 For my eyes watch al their ways, these are not hidden from me, and their guilt does not escape mygaze.
18 Et reddam primum duplices iniquitates et peccata eorum, quia contaminaverunt terram meam in morticinis idolorum suorum, et abominationibus suis impleverunt hæreditatem meam.	18 I shal requite their guilt and their sin twice over, since they have pol uted my country with thecarcases of their Horrors, and fil ed my heritage with their Abominations.'
19 Domine, fortitudo mea, et robur meum, et refugium meum in die tribulationis, ad te gentes venient ab extremis terræ, et dicent : Vere mendacium possederunt patres nostri, vanitatem quæ eis non profuit.	19 Yahweh, my strength, my stronghold, my refuge in time of distress! To you the nations wil come fromthe remotest parts of the earth and say, 'Our fathers inherited nothing but Delusion, Futility of no use whatever.
20 Numquid faciet sibi homo deos, et ipsi non sunt dii ?	20 Can human beings make their own gods? These are not gods at al !'
21 Idcirco ecce ego ostendam eis per vicem hanc, ostendam eis manum meam, et virtutem meam, et scient quia nomen mihi Dominus.	21 'Now listen, I will make them acknowledge, this time I wil make them acknowledge my hand and mymight; and then they wil know that Yahweh is my name.'
