Ecclesiastes 3

VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
1 Omnia tempus habent,
et suis spatiis transeunt universa sub cælo.
1 There is a season for everything, a time for every occupation under heaven:
2 Tempus nascendi, et tempus moriendi ;
tempus plantandi, et tempus evellendi quod plantatum est.
2 A time for giving birth, a time for dying; a time for planting, a time for uprooting what has been planted.
3 Tempus occidendi, et tempus sanandi ;
tempus destruendi, et tempus ædificandi.
3 A time for kil ing, a time for healing; a time for knocking down, a time for building.
4 Tempus flendi, et tempus ridendi ;
tempus plangendi, et tempus saltandi.
4 A time for tears, a time for laughter; a time for mourning, a time for dancing.
5 Tempus spargendi lapides, et tempus colligendi,
tempus amplexandi, et tempus longe fieri ab amplexibus.
5 A time for throwing stones away, a time for gathering them; a time for embracing, a time to refrain fromembracing.
6 Tempus acquirendi, et tempus perdendi ;
tempus custodiendi, et tempus abjiciendi.
6 A time for searching, a time for losing; a time for keeping, a time for discarding.
7 Tempus scindendi, et tempus consuendi ;
tempus tacendi, et tempus loquendi.
7 A time for tearing, a time for sewing; a time for keeping silent, a time for speaking.
8 Tempus dilectionis, et tempus odii ;
tempus belli, et tempus pacis.
8 A time for loving, a time for hating; a time for war, a time for peace.
9 Quid habet amplius homo de labore suo ?
9 What do people gain from the efforts they make?
10 Vidi afflictionem quam dedit Deus filiis hominum,
ut distendantur in ea.
10 I contemplate the task that God gives humanity to labour at.
11 Cuncta fecit bona in tempore suo,
et mundum tradidit disputationi eorum,
ut non inveniat homo opus
quod operatus est Deus ab initio usque ad finem.
11 All that he does is apt for its time; but although he has given us an awareness of the passage of time,we can grasp neither the beginning nor the end of what God does.
12 Et cognovi quod non esset melius nisi lætari,
et facere bene in vita sua ;
12 I know there is no happiness for a human being except in pleasure and enjoyment through life.
13 omnis enim homo qui comedit et bibit,
et videt bonum de labore suo,
hoc donum Dei est.
13 And when we eat and drink and find happiness in all our achievements, this is a gift from God.
14 Didici quod omnia opera quæ fecit Deus perseverent in perpetuum ;
non possumus eis quidquam addere, nec auferre,
quæ fecit Deus ut timeatur.
14 I know that whatever God does wil be for ever. To this there is nothing to add, from this there isnothing to subtract, and the way God acts inspires dread.
15 Quod factum est, ipsum permanet ;
quæ futura sunt jam fuerunt,
et Deus instaurat quod abiit.
15 What is, has been already, what will be, is already; God seeks out anyone who is persecuted.
16 Vidi sub sole in loco judicii impietatem,
et in loco justitiæ iniquitatem :
16 Again I observe under the sun: crime is where justice should be, the criminal is where the uprightshould be.
17 et dixi in corde meo :
Justum et impium judicabit Deus,
et tempus omnis rei tunc erit.
17 And I think to myself: the upright and the criminal will both be judged by God, since there is a time forevery thing and every action here.
18 Dixi in corde meo de filiis hominum,
ut probaret eos Deus,
et ostenderet similes esse bestiis.
18 I think to myself: where human beings are concerned, this is so that God can test them and show themthat they are animals.
19 Idcirco unus interitus est hominis et jumentorum,
et æqua utriusque conditio.
Sicut moritur homo,
sic et illa moriuntur.
Similiter spirant omnia,
et nihil habet homo jumento amplius :
cuncta subjacent vanitati,
19 For the fate of human and the fate of animal is the same: as the one dies, so the other dies; both havethe selfsame breath. Human is in no way better off than animal -- since al is futile.
20 et omnia pergunt ad unum locum.
De terra facta sunt,
et in terram pariter revertuntur.
20 Everything goes to the same place, everything comes from the dust, everything returns to the dust.
21 Quis novit si spiritus filiorum Adam ascendat sursum,
et si spiritus jumentorum descendat deorsum ?
21 Who knows if the human spirit mounts upward or if the animal spirit goes downward to the earth?
22 Et deprehendi nihil esse melius
quam lætari hominem in opere suo,
et hanc esse partem illius.
Quis enim eum adducet ut post se futura cognoscat ?
22 I see there is no contentment for a human being except happiness in achievement; such is the lot of ahuman beings. No one can tel us what wil happen after we are gone.
