VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Duodecim annorum erat Manasses cum regnare cœpisset, et quinquaginta quinque annis regnavit in Jerusalem.1 Manasseh was twelve years old when he came to the throne, and he reigned for fifty-five years inJerusalem.
Fecit autem malum coram Domino, juxta abominationes gentium quas subvertit Dominus coram filiis Israël :2 He did what is displeasing to Yahweh, copying the disgusting practices of the nations whom Yahwehhad dispossessed for the Israelites.
et conversus instauravit excelsa quæ demolitus fuerat Ezechias pater ejus : construxitque aras Baalim, et fecit lucos, et adoravit omnem militiam cæli, et coluit eam.3 He rebuilt the high places which his father Hezekiah had demolished, he set up altars to Baal andmade sacred poles, he worshipped the whole array of heaven and served it.
Ædificavit quoque altaria in domo Domini, de qua dixerat Dominus : In Jerusalem erit nomen meum in æternum.4 He built altars in the Temple of Yahweh, of which Yahweh had said, 'My name wil be in Jerusalem forever.'
Ædificavit autem ea cuncto exercitui cæli in duobus atriis domus Domini.5 He built altars to the whole array of heaven in the two courts of the Temple of Yahweh.
Transireque fecit filios suos per ignem in valle Benennom : observabat somnia, sectabatur auguria, maleficis artibus inserviebat, habebat secum magos et incantatores, multaque mala operatus est coram Domino ut irritaret eum.6 He caused his sons to pass through the fire of sacrifice in the Val ey of Ben-Hinnom. He practisedsoothsaying, divination and sorcery, and had dealings with mediums and spirit-guides. He did very many morethings displeasing to Yahweh, thus provoking his anger.
Sculptile quoque et conflatile signum posuit in domo Dei, de qua locutus est Deus ad David, et ad Salomonem filium ejus, dicens : In domo hac, et in Jerusalem quam elegi de cunctis tribubus Israël, ponam nomen meum in sempiternum.7 He put a sculpted image, an idol which he had had made, inside the Temple of which God had said toDavid and his son Solomon, 'In this Temple and in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen out of al the tribes ofIsrael, I shal put my name for ever.
Et moveri non faciam pedem Israël de terra quam tradidi patribus eorum : ita dumtaxat si custodierint facere quæ præcepi eis, cunctamque legem, et cæremonias atque judicia, per manum Moysi.8 Nor shal I ever again remove Israel's foot from the soil on which I established your ancestors oncondition that they were careful to observe al I commanded them as laid down in the whole Law, the statutesand the ordinances, given through Moses.'
Igitur Manasses seduxit Judam, et habitatores Jerusalem, ut facerent malum super omnes gentes quas subverterat Dominus a facie filiorum Israël.9 But Manasseh misled Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem into doing worse things than the nationswhich Yahweh had destroyed for the Israelites.
Locutusque est Dominus ad eum, et ad populum illius, et attendere noluerunt.10 When Yahweh spoke to Manasseh and his people, they would not listen.
Idcirco superinduxit eis principes exercitus regis Assyriorum : ceperuntque Manassen, et vinctum catenis atque compedibus duxerunt in Babylonem.
Yahweh then brought down on them the generals of the king of Assyria's army who capturedManasseh with hooks, put him in chains and took him to Babylon.
Qui postquam coangustatus est, oravit Dominum Deum suum : et egit pœnitentiam valde coram Deo patrum suorum.12 While in his distress, he placated Yahweh his God by genuinely humbling himself before the God ofhis ancestors.
Deprecatusque est eum, et obsecravit intente : et exaudivit orationem ejus, reduxitque eum Jerusalem in regnum suum, et cognovit Manasses quod Dominus ipse esset Deus.13 When he prayed to him, he was moved by his entreaty, heard his supplication and brought him backto Jerusalem to his kingdom. Manasseh realised then that Yahweh is God.
Post hæc ædificavit murum extra civitatem David ad occidentem Gihon in convalle, ab introitu portæ piscium per circuitum usque ad Ophel, et exaltavit illum vehementer : constituitque principes exercitus in cunctis civitatibus Juda munitis :14 Afterwards, he rebuilt the outer wall of the City of David, to the west of Gihon, in the val ey, up to theFish Gate and round the Ophel, and made it very much higher. And he stationed military governors in al thefortified towns of Judah.
et abstulit deos alienos, et simulacrum de domo Domini : aras quoque, quas fecerat in monte domus Domini et in Jerusalem : et projecit omnia extra urbem.15 He also removed the foreign gods and the idol from the Temple of Yahweh, as well as all the altarswhich he had built on the mountain of the Temple of Yahweh and in Jerusalem, and threw them out of the city.
Porro instauravit altare Domini, et immolavit super illud victimas, et pacifica, et laudem : præcepitque Judæ ut serviret Domino Deo Israël.16 He repaired the altar of Yahweh and offered communion sacrifices and thanksgiving offerings on it,and commanded Judah to serve Yahweh, God of Israel.
Attamen adhuc populus immolabat in excelsis Domino Deo suo.17 The people, however, went on sacrificing at the high places, although only to Yahweh their God.
Reliqua autem gestorum Manasse, et obsecratio ejus ad Deum suum, verba quoque videntium qui loquebantur ad eum in nomine Domini Dei Israël, continentur in sermonibus regum Israël.18 The rest of the history of Manasseh, his prayer to his God, and the prophecies of the seers whospoke to him in the name of Yahweh, God of Israel, can be found in the Annals of the Kings of Israel.
Oratio quoque ejus et exauditio, et cuncta peccata atque contemptus, loca etiam in quibus ædificavit excelsa, et fecit lucos et statuas antequam ageret pœnitentiam, scripta sunt in sermonibus Hozai.19 His prayer and how God was moved by his entreaty, all his sins, his infidelity, the sites where he builthigh places and set up sacred poles and idols before humbling himself, are set down in the records of Hozai.
Dormivit ergo Manasses cum patribus suis, et sepelierunt eum in domo sua : regnavitque pro eo filius ejus Amon.
Then Manasseh fel asleep with his ancestors and was buried in the garden of his palace. His sonAmon succeeded him.
Viginti duorum annorum erat Amon cum regnare cœpisset, et duobus annis regnavit in Jerusalem.21 Amon was twenty-two years old when he came to the throne, and he reigned for two years inJerusalem.
Fecitque malum in conspectu Domini, sicut fecerat Manasses pater ejus : et cunctis idolis quæ Manasses fuerat fabricatus, immolavit atque servivit.22 He did what is displeasing to Yahweh, as his father Manasseh had done, for Amon sacrificed to althe images which his father Manasseh had made, and served them.
Et non est reveritus faciem Domini, sicut reveritus est Manasses pater ejus, et multo majora deliquit.23 He did not humble himself before Yahweh as his father Manasseh had done; on the contrary, Amonwilfully added to his guilt.
Cumque conjurassent adversus eum servi sui, interfecerunt eum in domo sua.24 His retinue plotted against him and killed him in his own palace.
Porro reliqua populi multitudo, cæsis iis qui Amon percusserant, constituit regem Josiam filium ejus pro eo.25 The people of the country, however, slaughtered al those who had plotted against King Amon andproclaimed his son Josiah as his successor.
