VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Adam vero cognovit uxorem suam Hevam, quæ concepit et peperit Cain, dicens : Possedi hominem per Deum.1 The man had intercourse with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. 'I have acquireda man with the help of Yahweh,' she said.
Rursumque peperit fratrem ejus Abel. Fuit autem Abel pastor ovium, et Cain agricola.2 She gave birth to a second child, Abel, the brother of Cain. Now Abel became a shepherd and keptflocks, while Cain tilled the soil.
Factum est autem post multos dies ut offerret Cain de fructibus terræ munera Domino.3 Time passed and Cain brought some of the produce of the soil as an offering for Yahweh,
Abel quoque obtulit de primogenitis gregis sui, et de adipibus eorum : et respexit Dominus ad Abel, et ad munera ejus.4 while Abel for his part brought the first-born of his flock and some of their fat as wel . Yahweh lookedwith favour on Abel and his offering.
Ad Cain vero, et ad munera illius non respexit : iratusque est Cain vehementer, et concidit vultus ejus.5 But he did not look with favour on Cain and his offering, and Cain was very angry and downcast.
Dixitque Dominus ad eum : Quare iratus es ? et cur concidit facies tua ?6 Yahweh asked Cain, 'Why are you angry and downcast?
nonne si bene egeris, recipies : sin autem male, statim in foribus peccatum aderit ? sed sub te erit appetitus ejus, et tu dominaberis illius.7 If you are doing right, surely you ought to hold your head high! But if you are not doing right, Sin iscrouching at the door hungry to get you. You can still master him.'
Dixitque Cain ad Abel fratrem suum : Egrediamur foras. Cumque essent in agro, consurrexit Cain adversus fratrem suum Abel, et interfecit eum.8 Cain said to his brother Abel, 'Let us go out'; and while they were in the open country, Cain set on hisbrother Abel and killed him.
Et ait Dominus ad Cain : Ubi est Abel frater tuus ? Qui respondit : Nescio : num custos fratris mei sum ego ?9 Yahweh asked Cain, 'Where is your brother Abel?' 'I do not know,' he replied. 'Am I my brother'sguardian?'
Dixitque ad eum : Quid fecisti ? vox sanguinis fratris tui clamat ad me de terra.10 'What have you done?' Yahweh asked. 'Listen! Your brother's blood is crying out to me from theground.
Nunc igitur maledictus eris super terram, quæ aperuit os suum, et suscepit sanguinem fratris tui de manu tua.11 Now be cursed and banned from the ground that has opened its mouth to receive your brother's bloodat your hands.
Cum operatus fueris eam, non dabit tibi fructus suos : vagus et profugus eris super terram.12 When you til the ground it wil no longer yield up its strength to you. A restless wanderer you wil beon earth.'
Dixitque Cain ad Dominum : Major est iniquitas mea, quam ut veniam merear.13 Cain then said to Yahweh, 'My punishment is greater than I can bear.
Ecce ejicis me hodie a facie terræ, et a facie tua abscondar, et ero vagus et profugus in terra : omnis igitur qui invenerit me, occidet me.14 Look, today you drive me from the surface of the earth. I must hide from you, and be a restlesswanderer on earth. Why, whoever comes across me wil kill me!'
Dixitque ei Dominus : Nequaquam ita fiet : sed omnis qui occiderit Cain, septuplum punietur. Posuitque Dominus Cain signum, ut non interficeret eum omnis qui invenisset eum.15 'Very wel , then,' Yahweh replied, 'whoever kil s Cain wil suffer a sevenfold vengeance.' So Yahwehput a mark on Cain, so that no one coming across him would kil him.
Egressusque Cain a facie Domini, habitavit profugus in terra ad orientalem plagam Eden.
Cain left Yahweh's presence and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
Cognovit autem Cain uxorem suam, quæ concepit, et peperit Henoch : et ædificavit civitatem, vocavitque nomen ejus ex nomine filii sui, Henoch.17 Cain had intercourse with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. He became thefounder of a city and gave the city the name of his son Enoch.
Porro Henoch genuit Irad, et Irad genuit Maviaël, et Maviaël genuit Mathusaël, et Mathusaël genuit Lamech.18 Enoch fathered Irad, and Irad fathered Mehujael; Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushaelfathered Lamech.
Qui accepit duas uxores, nomen uni Ada, et nomen alteri Sella.19 Lamech married two women: the name of the first was Adah and the name of the second was Zil ah.
Genuitque Ada Jabel, qui fuit pater habitantium in tentoriis, atque pastorum.20 Adah gave birth to Jabal: he was the ancestor of tent-dwelling herdsmen.
Et nomen fratris ejus Jubal : ipse fuit pater canentium cithara et organo.21 His brother's name was Jubal: he was the ancestor of al who play the harp and the pipe.
Sella quoque genuit Tubalcain, qui fuit malleator et faber in cuncta opera æris et ferri. Soror vero Tubalcain, Noëma.22 As for Zil ah, she gave birth to Tubal-Cain: he was the ancestor of al who work copper and iron.Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah.
Dixitque Lamech uxoribus suis Adæ et Sellæ : Audite vocem meam, uxores Lamech ;
auscultate sermonem meum :
quoniam occidi virum in vulnus meum,
et adolescentulum in livorem meum.
Lamech said to his wives: Adah and Zil ah, hear my voice, wives of Lamech, listen to what I say: Ikil ed a man for wounding me, a boy for striking me.
Septuplum ultio dabitur de Cain :
de Lamech vero septuagies septies.
Sevenfold vengeance for Cain, but seventy-sevenfold for Lamech.
Cognovit quoque adhuc Adam uxorem suam : et peperit filium, vocavitque nomen ejus Seth, dicens : Posuit mihi Deus semen aliud pro Abel, quem occidit Cain.25 Adam had intercourse with his wife, and she gave birth to a son whom she named Seth, 'becauseGod has granted me other offspring', she said, 'in place of Abel, since Cain has kil ed him.'
Sed et Seth natus est filius, quem vocavit Enos : iste c?pit invocare nomen Domini.26 A son was also born to Seth, and he named him Enosh. This man was the first to invoke the nameYahweh.
