1 E David fuggì di Naiot, la quale era in Ramata; e vegnendo favellò a Ionata (, e disse): che ho io fatto? che iniquità è la mia, e che peccato ho io commesso nel tuo padre, che cerca l' anima mia?	1 Fleeing from the huts at Ramah, David went and confronted Jonathan, 'What have I done, what is myguilt, how have I wronged your father, for him to want to take my life?'
2 Il quale disse: non sarà così, tu non morrai; il mio padre non farà cosa alcuna, nè grande nè piccola, che non me lo dica inanzi; celerammi solo questo il padre mio? questo (non saprà nè) non sarà.	2 He replied, 'You must not think that! You are not going to die. My father, you see, does nothing,important or unimportant, without confiding in me, so why should my father hide this from me? It is not true.'
3 E [a] David giurò un' altra volta. Ed [egli] disse: il tuo padre sa ch' io sono grazioso negli occhi tuoi, e dirà: non sappia questo Ionata, acciò che non si tristi; e vive Iddio, e vive l'anima tua, (non sarà come tu di'), però che la morte ci divida (quando fui calato per la finestra del muro) te da me.	3 In reply, David swore, 'Your father knows very wel that I enjoy your favour, and thinks, "Jonathanmust not know about this or he wil be upset." But, as Yahweh lives and as you yourself live, there is only a stepbetween me and death.'
4 E Ionata disse a David: ciò che mi dirai, io farò a te.	4 At which, Jonathan said to David, 'Whatever you think best, I wil certainly do for you.'
5 E David disse a Ionata: ecco che domane sarà calende, e io sono usato di sedere a lato al re a mangiare; ora mi lascia stare nascoso nel campo insino al vespro del terzo dì.	5 David replied, 'Look, tomorrow is New Moon and I ought to sit at table with the king, but you must letme go and hide in the countryside until the evening.
6 E se il tuo padre, veggendo, dimanderà di me, rispondera'gli: David mi pregò, che volea di fretta andare in Betleem città sua; però che ivi era sacrificio solenne a tutti quelli della sua tribù.	6 If your father notices my absence, you must say, "David insistently asked me for permission to hurryover to Bethlehem, his home town, because they are holding the annual sacrifice there for the whole clan."
7 S' egli dirà BENE, sarà segno di pace al servo tuo; ma s'egli s' adirerà, sappi che è compiuta la sua malizia.	7 If he says, "Very wel ," your servant is safe, but if he flies into a rage, you may be sure that he hassome evil plan.
8 Onde farai misericordia col tuo servo; però che a me, tuo servo, facesti fare il patto di Dio; e se in me è alcuna iniquità, uccidimi tu, e non mi menare al tuo padre.	8 Show your servant faithful love, since you have bound your servant to you by a pact in Yahweh'sname. But if I am guilty, then kil me yourself -- why take me to your father?'
9 E Ionata disse: Iddio mi guardi da cotesto; e non potrà essere, che se io conoscerò che la malizia del mio padre sia compiuta contra di te, ch' io nol ti faccia a sapere.	9 Jonathan replied, 'Perish the thought! If I knew for sure that my father was determined to do you amischief, would I not have told you?'
10 E David respuose a Ionata: chi mi dirà, se il tuo padre parlerà duro di me?	10 David then said to Jonathan, 'Who wil let me know if your father gives you a harsh answer?'
11 E Ionata disse: vieni, usciamo fuori nel campo. E usciti amendue nel campo,	11 Jonathan then said to David, 'Come on, let us go out into the country,' and the pair of them went outinto the country.
12 disse Ionata a David: vive il Signore Iddio d'Israel, se io hoe trovato la sentenza del mio padre domane o l'altro, e alcuno bene sarà per David, e io non ti il significherò,	12 Jonathan then said to David, 'By Yahweh, God of Israel! I shal sound my father this time tomorrow; ifal is wel for David and I do not then send and inform you,
13 questo faccia Iddio a me, e questo aggiunga: ma se la malizia del padre mio persevererà contra te, io il ti manifesterò, e lascerotti che tu vadi in pace, e sia il Signore teco, sì come egli è istato col mio padre.	13 may Yahweh bring unnameable ills to Jonathan and worse ones too! If my father intends to do you amischief, I shal tel you so and let you get away, so that you can be safe. And may Yahweh be with you as heused to be with my father!
14 E se io viverò, farai meco la misericordia di Dio; e se io sarò morto,	14 If I am stil alive, show your servant faithful love; if I die,
15 non torrai la misericordia tua della casa mia in sempiterno (ovver se io nol farò), quando il Signore averà deradicati tutti i nemici di David della terra; tollendo (David) Ionata della sua casa, raddomandi Iddio delle mani de' nemici di David.	15 never withdraw your faithful love from my family. When Yahweh has exterminated every enemy ofDavid's from the face of the earth,
16 Onde Ionata contrasse patto colla casa di David; e raddomandò Iddio delle mani de' nimici di David.	16 do not let Jonathan's name be exterminated with Saul's family, or may Yahweh cal David toaccount!'
17 E anco Ionata (significò e) scongiurò David, però che l'amava come l'anima sua.	17 Jonathan then renewed his oath to David, since he loved him like his very soul.
18 E disse a lui: domani sarà calende, e sarà domandato di te.	18 Jonathan then said to David, 'Tomorrow is New Moon; your absence wil be noticed, since your placewil be empty.
19 E sarà cercato il tuo luogo insino al quarto dì. E però tosto verrai al luogo dove tu ti nasconderai; e vedi che sia giorno lecito di lavorare; e sederai presso alla pietra della qual il nome si è Ezel.	19 The day after tomorrow your absence wil be very marked, and you must go to the place where youhid on the day of the deed, and stay beside that mound.
20 E io manderò tre sagitte appo alla pietra; e trarrolle, come io traessi al segno.	20 For my part, the day after tomorrow I shal shoot three arrows in that direction, as though at a target.
21 E manderò uno fanciullo, e dirò: va e recami le saette.	21 I shal then send a servant to go and find the arrows. If I say to him, "The arrows are this side of you,get them," come out, since al will be well for you and nothing the matter, as sure as Yahweh lives.
22 E se io dirò al fanciullo: ecco, le saette sono di qua da te, tuogliele, e tu vieni a me, però che a te è pace, e vive il Signore, che niuna cosa ci è di male. Ma se io dirò al fanciullo: le saette sono di là da te, va in pace, però che Iddio ti lascia andare.	22 But if I say to him, "The arrows are ahead of you," then be off, for Yahweh himself wil be sendingyou away.
23 Ma di quello che tu e io abbiamo detto Iddio sia tra te e me, insino in sempiterno.	23 And as regards the agreement we made, you and I, why, Yahweh is witness between us for ever.'
24 E David si nascose nel campo, e vennero le calende; e sederono a mangiare il pane.	24 So David hid in the country; New Moon came and the king sat down to his meal.
25 E seduto il re nella sedia sua secondo l'usanza, la quale era presso al muro, Ionata istette su; e Abner sedè a lato a Saul, e il luogo di David apparve voto.	25 He sat in his usual place with his back to the wall, Jonathan sat facing him and Abner sat next toSaul; but David's place was empty.
26 E non disse alcuna cosa Saul quello dì; però che pensava che gli fosse intervenuto, che non fosse mondo e che non fosse purificato.	26 Saul said nothing that day, thinking, 'It is sheer chance; he is unclean.'
27 E venuto il dì dopo le calende, anche apparve vòto il luogo di David. E Saul disse a Ionata suo figliuolo che è ciò, che nè oggi nè ieri il figliuolo d' Isai non è venuto a mangiare?	27 On the day after New Moon, the second day, David's place was stil empty.
28 E Ionata rispose a Saul: egli mi pregò istrettamente, che 'l lasciassi andare in Betleem.	28 Saul said to his son Jonathan, 'Why did not the son of Jesse come to the meal either yesterday ortoday?'
29 E disse: lasciami andare, però che alla città sì è sacrificio solenne, e uno de' miei fratelli sì è venuto per me; onde se io ho grazia nel tuo cospetto, piacciati ch' io vada tosto a vedere li miei fratelli. E per questa ragione non è venuto a mensa del re.	29 Jonathan answered Saul, 'David insistently asked me for permission to go to Bethlehem. "Please letme go," he said, "for we are holding the clan sacrifice in the town and my brothers have ordered me to attend.So now, if I enjoy your favour, let me get away and see my brothers." That is why he has not come to the king'stable.'
30 E irato Saul contro a Ionata, disse: figliuolo della malvagia femina, non so io che tu ami il figliuolo di Isai, in tua confusione, e della tua vituperata madre?	30 Saul flew into a rage with Jonathan and said, 'Son of a rebel ious slut! Don't I know that you side withthe son of Jesse to your own shame and your mother's dishonour?
31 Però che, tutto il tempo che il figliuolo di Isai viverà sopra la terra, non sarai firmato tu, nè 'l tuo regno. Onde manda per lui, e fallo venire a me; però ch' egli è figliuolo di morte.	31 As long as the son of Jesse lives on earth, neither you nor your royal rights are secure. Now havehim fetched and brought to me; he deserves to die.'
32 E Ionata respondendo disse a Saul suo padre: perchè morirà egli? che ha ello fatto?	32 Jonathan retorted to his father Saul, 'Why should he die? What has he done?'
33 E Saul prese la lancia per ferirlo. E conobbe Ionata, che il padre avea determinato di uccidere David.	33 But Saul brandished his spear at him to strike him, and Jonathan realised that his father wasdetermined that David should die.
34 E levossi Ionata dalla mensa con furore; e non mangiò, il secondo dì di calende, pane. E contristossi per David, però che il padre suo l' avea confuso.	34 Hot with anger, Jonathan got up from the table and ate nothing on the second day of the month,being upset about David -- and because his father had insulted him.
35 E fatto la mattina, Ionata uscì nel campo, sì come avea ordinato con David, e uno piccolo fanciullo con esso lui.	35 Next morning, Jonathan went out into the country at the time agreed with David, taking a youngservant with him.
36 E disse al fanciullo suo: va e recami le saette, ch' io saetterò. E correndo il fanciullo, gittò l'altra saetta oltre il fanciullo.	36 He said to his servant, 'Run and find the arrows which I am going to shoot,' and the servant ran whileJonathan shot an arrow ahead of him.
37 E venuto il fanciullo al luogo dove Ionata avea mandata la saetta, sì gridò Ionata dopo il fanciullo, e disse: la saetta è di là da te.	37 When the servant reached the spot to which Jonathan had shot the arrow, Jonathan shouted afterhim, 'Is not the arrow ahead of you?'
38 E anco un' altra volta gridò Ionata dopo il fanciullo, e disse: corri tosto e non istare. E ricolse il fanciullo le saette, e portolle a Ionata suo Signore.	38 Again Jonathan shouted after the servant, 'Quick! Hurry, do not stand around.' Jonathan's servantpicked up the arrow and brought it back to his master.
39 E non sapea nulla di quello che si facea; solo Ionata e David sapeano il fatto.	39 The servant suspected nothing; only Jonathan and David knew what was meant.
40 E Ionata diede l'arme sue al fanciullo, e disse: portale alla città.	40 Jonathan then gave his weapons to his servant and said, 'Go and carry them to the town.'
41 E andato il fanciullo (alla città), David uscì del luogo (dove era nascoso) il quale era verso la parte australe; e cadendo in terra, orò tre volte; e basciando l'uno l'altro, piansero insieme, ma David più.	41 As soon as the servant had gone, David stood up beside the mound, threw himself to the ground,prostrating himself three times. They then embraced each other, both weeping copiously.
42 E Ionata disse a David: va in pace; stea fermo tutto quello che noi giurammo insieme nel nome di Dio, dicendo: il Signore sia intra me e te, e intra il seme mio e il seme tuo, insino in sempiterno.	42 Jonathan then said to David, 'Go in peace. And as regards the oath that both of us have sworn bythe name of Yahweh, may Yahweh be witness between you and me, between your descendants and mine forever.'
43 E andossene David; e Ionata tornò nella città.
