BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Adunqne io sì dico: cacciò Dio il popolo suo? Non piaccia a Dio. Chè io sì sono del popolo d' Israel, e del seme d' Abraam, e della tribù di Beniamin.	1 What I am saying is this: is it possible that God abandoned his people? Out of the question! I too aman Israelite, descended from Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
2 Non cacciò Dio la sua gente, la quale cognovve dinanzi. E non sapete quello che dice la Scrittura per bocca di Elia profeta, e come prega Dio contra alli figliuoli d' Israel?	2 God never abandoned his own people to whom, ages ago, he had given recognition. Do you notremember what scripture says about Elijah and how he made a complaint to God against Israel:
3 (Il quale dice così): Signore, li tuoi profeti hanno uccisi; questi hanno cavato insino al fondo il tuo altare; e io son lasciato solo, e vannomi cacciando per uccidere.	3 Lord, they have put your prophets to the sword, torn down your altars. I am the only one left, and now they want to kil me?
4 Ma che gli fu risposto da Dio? (non temere, dice Dio che) io m'abbo serbati sette milia uomini, li quali non s' inginocchiarono dinanzi all' idolo Baal.	4 And what was the prophetic answer given? I have spared for myself seven thousand men that havenot bent the knee to Baal.
5 Adunque simigliantemente in questo tempo lo rimanente fia fatto salvo, secondo che Dio gli elegge per sua grazia.	5 In the same way, then, in our own time, there is a remnant, set aside by grace.
6 E sono salvi per la grazia; già non sono. salvi per loro, e perchè facciano secondo la legge; e se per l'opere della legge fosse salvazione, la grazia adunque non sarebbe grazia.	6 And since it is by grace, it cannot now be by good actions, or grace would not be grace at al !
7 Adunque che diremo? che quella cosa, che i figliuoli andavano cercando, non la possono trovare nè avere; certo la grazia e l' eleggimento d' alquanti pur è trovata; tutti gli altri sono ciechi,	7 What fol ows? Israel failed to find what it was seeking; only those who were chosen found it and therest had their minds hardened;
8 secondo ch' è scritto: Dio sì diede loro spirito d'inganno, e gli occhi che non vedano, e orecchie che non odano, insino al dì d' oggi.	8 just as it says in scripture: God has infused them with a spirit of lethargy; until today they have noteyes to see or ears to hear.
9 E David ancora dice: fia la loro mensa (dinanzi da loro) come lacciuolo e pregione, e scandolo per loro guiderdone.	9 David too says: May their own table prove a trap for them, a pitfal and a snare; let that be theirretribution.
10 E gli occhi di costoro siano oscurati, che non vedano; e sempre abassa li reni di costoro (Signore).	10 May their eyes grow so dim they cannot see, and their backs be bent for ever.
11 Adunque, diciamo noi, offesero Dio in tal guisa costoro (cioè li figliuoli d'Israel) perchè egli dovessero così cadere? Non piaccia a Dio: ma il loro peccato sì è salvazione dell' altre genti, perchè le genti abbiano coloro in odio.	11 What I am saying is this: Was this stumbling to lead to their final downfall? Out of the question! Onthe contrary, their failure has brought salvation for the gentiles, in order to stir them to envy.
12 Ma se il peccato di coloro dà divizia all'altre genti, e l'abbassamento loro è ricchezza delle genti, quanto maggiormente l' abbondanza loro? (sarà divizia dell' altre genti).	12 And if their fal has proved a great gain to the world, and their loss has proved a great gain to thegentiles -- how much greater a gain wil come when all is restored to them!
13 E a voi genti dico così, che quanto tempo io sarò apostolo di genti, il mio offizio io averò (a magnificare e) a onorare,	13 Let me say then to you gentiles that, as far as I am an apostle to the gentiles, I take pride in thiswork of service;
14 se per alcuna guisa io, macerando la mia carne, ne potessi salvare alcuno di loro.	14 and I want it to be the means of rousing to envy the people who are my own blood-relations and soof saving some of them.
15 Che se il perdimento di coloro è racconciamento del mondo; che n'è da credere, se non che la vita hanno (le genti) per li morti?	15 Since their rejection meant the reconciliation of the world, do you know what their re-acceptance willmean? Nothing less than life from the dead!
16 Ma se il deliberamento è santo, la massa è santa; e se la radice è santa, e li rami sono santi.	16 When the first-fruits are made holy, so is the whole batch; and if the root is holy, so are thebranches.
17 Ma se alcuni de' rami son rotti, voi genti che eravate secondo ch' è oliva salvatica, se voi siete incalmati in quello ceppo domestico, e siete accompagnati a quella buona radice e alla grassezza di quella (buona) oliva, (cioè alla buona fede che aveano li iudei in qua dietro),	17 Now suppose that some branches were broken off, and you are wild olive, grafted among the rest toshare with the others the rich sap of the olive tree;
18 non vi gloriate però contra alli rami (fiaccati); chè per certo (tu che fusti pagano) tu non sostieni la radice, anzi la radice sostiene te (che vi fosti innestato su).	18 then it is not for you to consider yourself superior to the other branches; and if you start feelingproud, think: it is not you that sustain the root, but the root that sustains you.
19 Ma forse tu mi dirai: li rami sono rotti, perchè vi fussi innestato.	19 You wil say, 'Branches were broken off on purpose for me to be grafted in.' True;
20 Bene dici: (ed io ti dico che) quelli rami si son rotti perchè non credettono; imperò tu sta fermo nella fede; non ti levare in superbia, ma abbi timore (e paura).	20 they through their unbelief were broken off, and you are established through your faith. So it is notpride that you should have, but fear:
21 Chè se Dio non perdonò a quelli rami che erano naturali, forse (per la ventura) non perdonerà a te.	21 if God did not spare the natural branches, he might not spare you either.
22 Adunque tieni mente la vendetta di Dio e la sua misericordia; in coloro che peccarono è la vendetta; ed è in te la misericordia, se tu dimorerai nel bene fare; chè se tu non starai fermo nella fede, tu caderai giuso.	22 Remember God's severity as well as his goodness: his severity to those who fel , and his goodnessto you as long as you persevere in it; if not, you too will be cut off.
23 ... e Dio è potente a reincalmare ancora coloro che furono tagliati.	23 And they, if they do not persevere in their unbelief, wil be grafted in; for it is within the power of Godto graft them back again.
24 Se tu che fusti naturalmente oliva salvatica, in prima fosti incalmato in buono ceppo, molto maggiormente quelli, che furono in prima dimestichi, possono esser rinnestati nella sua oliva medesima.	24 After al , if you, cut off from what was by nature a wild olive, could then be grafted unnaturally on to acultivated olive, how much easier wil it be for them, the branches that natural y belong there, to be grafted on tothe olive tree which is their own.
25 Fratelli miei, voglio che voi cognosciate questo secreto; perchè voi non tegnate voi medesimi si savi; che grande parte venne per cechezza (cioè che addivenne) alli figliuoli d' Israel, (e saranno ciechi) insino a tanto che sarà entrata tutta la moltitudine dell' altre genti,	25 I want you to be quite certain, brothers, of this mystery, to save you from congratulating yourselveson your own good sense: part of Israel had its mind hardened, but only until the gentiles have whol y come in;
26 e così poi tutti li figliuoli d' Israel (crederanno e) saranno salvi, secondo ch' è scritto: dal cielo verrà quelli che salverà, e rivolgerà la (durezza e la) empietà (de' figliuoli) di Iacob.	26 and this is how all Israel will be saved. As scripture says: From Zion will come the Redeemer, he wilremove godlessness from Jacob.
27 E questo testamento (dice Dio) averanno da me, quando io torrò loro peccata.	27 And this wil be my covenant with them, when I take their sins away.
28 Chè certo quelli per l'amore vostro son nemici; e secondo l'elezione (di Dio) son molto cari per amore de' loro (santi) antichi.	28 As regards the gospel, they are enemies, but for your sake; but as regards those who are God'schoice, they are stil wel loved for the sake of their ancestors.
29 E sappiate che li doni di Dio e il suo chiamamento si son senza penitenzia.	29 There is no change of mind on God's part about the gifts he has made or of his choice.
30 Secondo che fu già tempo, che voi non credevate in Dio, ma ora avete trovata (e accettata) la misericordia per la incredulità di coloro (cioè d' Israel),	30 Just as you were in the past disobedient to God but now you have been shown mercy, through theirdisobedience;
31 e così ora per la vostra misericordia egli non credettono; imperò ch' elli troveranno misericordia (per l'altro tempo).	31 so in the same way they are disobedient now, so that through the mercy shown to you they too wilreceive mercy.
32 E così ha Dio tutte le cose rinchiuse nella incredulità, per avere misericordia di tutte le genti.	32 God has imprisoned al human beings in their own disobedience only to show mercy to them al .
33 O altezza di divizie della sapienza e della scienza di Dio, come son male agevoli a cognoscere li suoi gindicii, e le sue vie come son forti a cercare!	33 How rich and deep are the wisdom and the knowledge of God! We cannot reach to the root of hisdecisions or his ways.
34 E chi è quelli che conobbe il senno del Signore? e chi fu suo consigliere?	34 Who has ever known the mind of the Lord? Who has ever been his adviser?
35 E chi è quelli che prima fece doni a lui, e sarà (renduto e) guiderdonato?	35 Who has given anything to him, so that his presents come only as a debt returned?
36 Imperò che da lui e per lui [e in lui] sono tutte le cose: e a lui sia (onore e) gloria per tutti li secoli.	36 Everything there is comes from him and is caused by him and exists for him. To him be glory forever! Amen.
