Deuteronomio 9

1 Odi, Israel: tu passerai oggi il (fiume) Giordano, acciò che tu possegghi tutte quelle nazioni (e genti) grandi e più forti di te, cittadi grandissime e mu rate insino al cielo,	1 "Hear, O Israel! You are now about to cross the Jordan to enter in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than yourselves, having large cities fortified to the sky,
2 il popolo grande e alto, figliuoli di giganti, i quali tu hai veduto e udisti (nominare), ai quali persona niuna puote contrastare (nè innanzi apparere).	2 the Anakim, a people great and tall. You know of them and have heard it said of them, 'Who can stand up against the Anakim?'
3 Adunque saprai oggi, che Iddio, tuo Signore, egli andarà innanzi a te, come fuoco che divora e consuma, il quale loro atterri e ispenga e uccida dinanzi alla faccia tua tostamente, com ' egli ti parloe (e promise).	3 Understand, then, today that it is the LORD, your God, who will cross over before you as a consuming fire; he it is who will reduce them to nothing and subdue them before you, so that you can drive them out and destroy them quickly, as the LORD promised you.
4 Nè non dire poi nel cuore tuo, quando Iddio, tuo Signore, avrà (morti e) ispenti costoro dinnanzi a te: per la mia giustizia (cioè per ch' io sono giusto) Iddio m'ha menato e messo in questa terra, acciò ch' io la possedessi; conciosiacosa che queste (genti e) nacioni siano ispente (e morte) per le loro iniquitadi.	4 After the LORD, your God, has thrust them out of your way, do not say to yourselves, 'It is because of my merits that the LORD has brought me in to possess this land'; for it is really because of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD is driving them out before you.
5 Imperciò [che] io ti dico che nè per le tue giu stizie, nè per la (tua bontade ed) equitade del tuo cuore entrerai acciò che possegghi le loro terre: ma per chè quelle feceno cose empie (e malvagie), entrando tu, elle furono (morte e) spente; e ancora acciò che Iddio compisse la sua parola, e quello ch' avea (detto e ch' avea) promesso per giuramento a' tuoi padri Abraam, Isaac e lacob.	5 No, it is not because of your merits or the integrity of your heart that you are going in to take possession of their land; but the LORD, your God, is driving these nations out before you on account of their wickedness and in order to keep the promise which he made on oath to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
6 Sappi adunque (e conosci), che non per le tue giustizie Iddio, tuo Signore, dato t'abbia (perciò) questa ottima terra in possessione, conciosiacosa che tu sie popolo di duro capo.	6 Understand this, therefore: it is not because of your merits that the LORD, your God, is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.
7 Ricordati, e fae che non t'esca di mente, come tu concitasti Iddio tuo Signore ad ira nel de serto. Da quel dì che uscisti d'Egitto, insino a questo luogo, sempremai contro a Dio tuo Signore tu con tendesti.	7 "Bear in mind and do not forget how you angered the LORD, your God, in the desert. From the day you left the land of Egypt until you arrived in this place, you have been rebellious toward the LORD.
8 Onde in Oreb tu il (concitasti e) provocasti; onde adirato egli ti volse spegnere (e uccidere),	8 At Horeb you so provoked the LORD that he was angry enough to destroy you,
9 quando io salii in sul monte per pigliare due tavole di pietra, cioè le tavole del patto che avea fatto Iddio con voi; (e stetti) e perseverai nel monte suso, quaranta dì e quaranta notti, non manicando pane e non bevendo acqua.	9 when I had gone up the mountain to receive the stone tablets of the covenant which the LORD made with you. Meanwhile I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights without eating or drinking,
10 E Iddio sì mi diede due tavole di pietra, le quali erano iscritte (colla mano e) col dito di Dio, nelle quali si contenevano tutte le parole, le quali vi (disse e) parlò nel monte di mezzo del fuoco, quando tutto il popolo si raunò.	10 till the LORD gave me the two tablets of stone inscribed, by God's own finger, with a copy of all the words that the LORD spoke to you on the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly.
11 E passati i quaranta dì, e altrettante notti, Iddio mi diede due tavole del patto tra voi e lui.	11 Then, at the end of the forty days and forty nights, when the LORD had given me the two stone tablets of the covenant,
12 E sì mi disse: lièvati suso (e partiti quinci) e tosto va giuso; imperciò che il popolo tuo, il quale trasti d'Egitto, hanno tostamente abbandonata la via la quale tu mostrasti (e insegnasti) loro, e han nosi fatto e gonfiato uno vitello per Iddio.	12 he said to me, 'Go down from here now, quickly, for your people whom you have brought out of Egypt have become depraved; they have already turned aside from the way I pointed out to them and have made for themselves a molten idol.
13 E ancora mi disse Iddio: io cheveggo questo popolo si è di duro capo;	13 I have seen now how stiff-necked this people is,' the LORD said to me.
14 lasciami fare, acciò ch' io l'atterri (e uccida) e spenga il suo nome di sotto dal cielo; e sì te porroe sopra gente la quale è maggiore e più forte di questa.	14 'Let me be, that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under the heavens. I will then make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.'
15 E allora, vegnendo io e discendendo del monte ardente, e tenendo due tavole del patto (tra voi e Iddio) in mano,	15 "When I had come down again from the blazing, fiery mountain, with the two tablets of the covenant in both my hands,
16 e vedessi che voi avevate (offeso e) peccato dinanzi a Dio vostro Signore, e avevatevi fatto uno vitello gonfiato al fuoco per vostro Iddio, ed eratevi partiti, e avevate abbandonata tostamente la via sua, la quale io aveva mostrata,	16 I saw how you had sinned against the LORD, your God: you had already turned aside from the way which the LORD had pointed out to you by making for yourselves a molten calf!
17 gettai le tavole delle mie mani a terra, e sì le ruppi (e ispezzai dinanzi a voi e) in vostra presenza.	17 Raising the two tablets with both hands I threw them from me and broke them before your eyes.
18 E si mi gittai in terra dinanzi a Dio, sicco me io aveva fatto in prima, quadraginta di e quadraginta notti, non mangiando pane nè bevendo acqua. (E questo feci) per tutti i vostri peccati, i quali faceste contro a Dio vostro Signore, e provocastelo ad ira.	18 Then, as before, I lay prostrate before the LORD for forty days and forty nights without eating or drinking, because of all the sin you had committed in the sight of the LORD and the evil you had done to provoke him.
19 E io ebbi paura dell' ira e indignazione sua, per la quale concitato contro di voi sì vi volse (uccidere e) ispegnere (di terra); e Iddio si esaudì il prego mio (e la mia orazione, la quale io feci per voi) ancora quest'altra volta.	19 For I dreaded the fierce anger of the LORD against you: his wrath would destroy you. Yet once again the LORD listened to me.
20 Ancora, contro ad Aaron fortemente turbato, volselo gittare a terra e uccidere; e per lui simi gliantemente pregai (e orai).	20 With Aaron, too, the LORD was deeply angry, and would have killed him had I not prayed for him also at that time.
21 E il vostro peccato, il quale voi avevate fatto, io il presi, cioè il vitello; e sì lo arsi, e rom pendolo (inanzi) in pezzi, e al tutto facendolo tornare in polvere, sì lo gittai nel torrente (dell' acqua) il quale iscendeva giù del monte.	21 Then, taking the calf, the sinful object you had made, and fusing it with fire, I ground it down to powder as fine as dust, which I threw into the wadi that went down the mountainside.
22 Nello incendio e nella tentazione e ne' se polcri della concupiscenza (vostra) voi provocaste (e concitaste) Iddio contro a voi (cioè tre volte).	22 "At Taberah, at Massah, and at Kibroth-hattaavah likewise, you provoked the LORD to anger.
23 E quando egli vi mandò di Cadesbarne, e disse: salite (e andate) e possedete la terra la quale io vi diedi, allora dispregiaste il comandamento di Dio, vostro Signore, e non gli credeste, nè non vo leste udire la voce sua.	23 And when he sent you up from Kadesh-barnea to take possession of the land he was giving you, you rebelled against this command of the LORD, your God, and would not trust or obey him.
24 Ma sempre foste ribelli insino al die ch' io vi cominciai a conoscere.	24 Ever since I have known you, you have been rebels against the LORD.
25 E io giacqui in terra dinanzi a Dio, quaranta dì e quaranta notti; ne' quali (dì quaranta e quaranta notti) io pregai Iddio piatosamente, che egli non vi spegnesse (nè uccidesse) siccome egli avea minacciato.	25 "Those forty days, then, and forty nights, I lay prostrate before the LORD, because he had threatened to destroy you.
26 E orando dissi: Signore Iddio, io ti priego che tu non uccida il tuo popolo, nè ispegni la tua ereditade, la quale (comperasti e) iscampasti colla tua (virtù e) grandezza, i quali tu traesti d'Egitto colla tua mano forte.	26 This was my prayer to him: O Lord GOD, destroy not your people, the heritage which your majesty has ransomed and brought out of Egypt with your strong hand.
27 Ricordati de' tuoi servi Abraam, Isaac e Iacob; e non guardare alla durizia di questo popolo e alla loro empietade e allo loro peccato,	27 Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Look not upon the stubbornness of this people nor upon their wickedness and sin,
28 acciò che non dicano gli abitatori della terra donde gli traesti: Iddio non gli potea mettere nella terra la quale avea loro promessa, e avevali in odio; e imperciò gli menò, acciò che gli uccidesse, nel deserto della solitudine.	28 lest the people from whose land you have brought us say, 'The LORD was not able to bring them into the land he promised them'; or 'Out of hatred for them, he brought them out to slay them in the desert.'
29 Chi è, che sia come il popolo tuo, e come la tua eredità, la quale traesti (e menasti d'Egitto) colla [tua] gran fortezza e col tuo braccio potente?	29 They are, after all, your people and your heritage, whom you have brought out by your great power and with your outstretched arm.
