1 Seppe adunque Simone quello che Trifone avea fatto, ch' egli avea radunata grande oste, per venire in Giudea a distruggerla.	1 Simon heard that Trypho had col ected a large army to invade and devastate Judaea,
2 E veggendo che il popolo era ispaventato, sì se ne venne in Ierusalem, e radunò il popolo (a parlamento).	2 and when he saw how the people were quaking with fear, he went up to Jerusalem, cal ed the peopletogether,
3 E confortandogli disse: voi sapete quante cose io e gli miei fratelli e il lignaggio di mio padre abbiamo fatto per mantenere le nostre leggi e gli nostri santi, e quante angosce abbiamo sostenute.	3 and exhorted them thus, 'You know yourselves how much I and my brothers and my father's familyhave done for the laws and the sanctuary; you know what wars and hardships we have experienced.
4 Per grazia di queste cose, e per difensione del nostro popolo, gli miei fratelli sono morti, e io solo sono rimaso, (e Ionata preso).	4 That is why my brothers are all dead, for Israel's sake, and I am the only one left.
5 Adunque non piaccia a Dio (da poi che Ionata è preso), io perdoni alla vita mia in tutto il tempo delle avversitadi; imperciò ch' io non sono migliore degli miei fratelli.	5 Far be it from me, then, to be sparing of my own life in any time of oppression, for I am not worth morethan my brothers.
6 E (sporrommi ad ogni pericolo, e) vendicherò la mia gente, e (difenderò) le nostre sante leggi, e le nostre donne e gli nostri figliuoli; imperciò che tutti gli nostri nimici sono radunati per uccidere noi.	6 Rather wil I avenge my nation and the sanctuary and your wives and children, now that the foreignersare al united in malice to destroy us.'
7 E quando il popolo udì questi sermoni, il loro spirito con lui insieme si raccese.	7 The people's spirit rekindled as they listened to his words,
8 E rispuosono con grande voce, dicendo: tu se' il nostro duca in luogo di Giuda (Maccabeo) e di Ionata tuo fratello.	8 and they shouted back at him, 'You are our leader in place of Judas and your brother Jonathan.
9 Adunque combattiamo (e ordiniamo e facciamo) la nostra battaglia; e ciò che tu dirai, faremo.	9 Fight our battles for us, and we wil do whatever you tel us.'
10 Allora Simone radunde tutti i buoni battaglieri, e affrettossi di compire tutte le mura di Ierusalem, e armolla intorno.	10 So he assembled al the fighting men and hurried on with completing the wal s of Jerusalem,fortifying the whole perimeter.
11 E mandò uno principe, figliuolo di Assalomi, che avea Ionata, in Ioppen con oste nuova; e cacciò quegli che v' erano, ed egli vi rimase.	11 He sent a considerable force to Joppa under Jonathan son of Absalom who drove out the inhabitantsand remained there in occupation.
12 E Trifone si mosse di Tolemaida per venire nelle terre de' Giudei con molta gente; e menò Ionata, il quale teneva in prigione.	12 Trypho now left Ptolemais with a large army to invade Judaea, taking Jonathan with him underguard.
13 E Simone se ne venne [in Addus], e andava incontro alla faccia del campo (suo).	13 Simon pitched camp in Adida, facing the plain.
14 E quando Trifone seppe che Simone s'era levato in luogo di Ionata suo fratello, e che con lui gli convenìa combattere, mandò a lui ambasciatori,	14 When Trypho learned that Simon had taken the place of his brother Jonathan and that he intendedto join battle with him, he sent envoys to him with this message,
15 dicendo: sappi che noi teniamo preso Ionata tuo fratello, per argento ch' egli dovea dare nella ragione del re.	15 'Your brother Jonathan was in debt to the royal exchequer for the offices he held; that is why we aredetaining him.
16 E però (se tu vuoli ch' egli si parta da noi, e che noi il lasciamo) mandami C talenti d' argento, e i suoi due figliuoli per ostaggi, acciò che lasciandolo non si fugga da noi, e sì nel rimanderemo.	16 If you send a hundred talents of silver and two of his sons as hostages, to make sure that on hisrelease he does not revolt against us, we shal release him.'
17 Di che Simone (dubitava e) conobbe veramente che il suo parlare era di tradimento; ma pure consentì di mandargli l'argento e li fanciulli, acciò che il popolo non lo odiasse, dicendo:	17 Although Simon was aware that the message was a ruse, he sent for the money and the boys forfear of incurring great hostility from the people,
18 Vedi che è lasciato morire, per [non] mandargli l'argento e li fanciulli.	18 who would have said that Jonathan had died because Simon would not send Trypho the money andthe children.
19 E per questa cagione gli mandò l'argento e li fanciulli; donde Trifone mentì, però che non rimandò Ionata, (ma si ritenne l'argento e li fanciulìi).	19 He therefore sent both the boys and the hundred talents, but Trypho broke his word and did notrelease Jonathan.
20 Poi Trifone venne nel paese per guastarlo; e aggirarono per la via onde si va ad Ador; e Simone colla sua oste gli si poneva presso in ogni luogo, dovunque loro andavano.	20 Next, Trypho set about the invasion and devastation of the country; he made a detour along theAdora road, but Simon and his army confronted him wherever he attempted to go.
21 Ma quegli ch' erano nella ròcca mandarono ambasciadori a Trifone, ch' egli s'affrettasse e venisse per lo deserto, e mandasse loro vittuaglia.	21 The men in the Citadel kept sending messengers to Trypho, urging him to get through to them byway of the desert and send them supplies.
22 E acconciossi Trifone con tutta la cavalleria. per venire quella notte; ma egli era grande nevato, e non venne in Galaaditim.	22 Trypho organised his entire cavalry to go, but that night it snowed so heavily that he could not getthrough for the snow, so he left there and moved off into Gilead.
23 Ma quando egli s'approssimò a Bascama, egli quivi uccise Ionata e li suoi figliuoli.	23 As he approached Baskama he kil ed Jonathan, who was buried there.
24 E poi si partì Trifone, e tornossi in suo paese.	24 Trypho turned back and regained his own country.
25 Allora Simone mandò a ricogliere il corpo. di Ionata e de' suoi figliuoli, e seppelligli in Modin, città de' loro padri.	25 Simon sent and recovered the bones of his brother Jonathan, and buried him in Modein, the town ofhis ancestors.
26 E tutto il popolo d' Israel lo piansono, e feciono grande lamento per molti giorni.	26 Al Israel kept solemn mourning for him and long bewailed him.
27 E Simone edificò sopra la sepoltura del padre suo e de' suoi fratelli uno alto edificio, però che si vedesse dalla lunga, di pietra (lavorata e) pulita dinanzi e di dietro.	27 Over the tomb of his father and brothers, Simon raised a monument high enough to catch the eye,using dressed stone back and front.
28 E ordinovvi sette piramidi (e appuntate) le quali erano l' una contro all' altra; e una ne fece al padre, e una alla madre, e quattro a' fratelli, (e una per sè).	28 He erected seven pyramids facing each other, for his father and mother and his four brothers,
29 E intorno a queste piramidi puose grandi colonne, e sopra le colonne l'arme a perpetuale memoria; e a lato all' arme puose navi intagliate, le quali vedessono li naviganti per mare.	29 surrounding them with a structure consisting of tal columns surmounted by trophies of arms to theireverlasting memory and, beside the trophies of arms, ships sculpted on a scale to be seen by al who sail thesea.
30 E questo fue il monumento che fece (fare Simone Maccabeo) in Modin, e infino al dì d'oggi si pare.	30 Such was the monument he constructed at Modein, and it is stil there today.
31 Ora avvenne che Trifone, camminando con Antioco re giovane, per tradimento l'uccise.	31 Now Trypho, betraying the trust of young King Antiochus, put him to death.
32 E regnò in suo luogo, e incoronossi [re] d' Asia; egli fu uomo che fece grande male in terra.	32 He usurped his throne, assuming the crown of Asia, and brought great havoc on the country.
33 E (intanto) Simone afforzòe le tenute di Giudea, e puosevi fornimenti, e fecevi alte torri,	33 Simon built up the fortresses of Judaea, surrounding them with high towers, great wal s and gateswith bolts, and stocked these fortresses with food.
34 E poi elesse Simone ambasciadori, e mandògli allo re Demetrio, che gli piacesse di dovere deliberare la contrada de' suoi debiti; imperciò che quello ch' era istato fatto, si era per lo arbitrio di Trifone.	34 He also sent a delegation to King Demetrius, to get him to grant the province a remission, since alTrypho did was to despoil.
35 Allora Demetrio rispuose queste parole, scritte nella tale lettera mandata :	35 King Demetrius replied to his request in a letter framed as fol ows:
36 Lo re Demetrio a Simone, sommo sacerdote e amico del re, e a' più antichi di Giudea, e alla loro gente, salute.	36 'King Demetrius to Simon, high priest and Friend of Kings, and to the elders and nation of the Jews,greetings.
37 Noi abbiamo ricevuto la corona dell' oro e il collare che ci mandaste, e siamo apparecchiati di fare con voi grande pace, e scrivere alli nostri ufficiali, che vi rimettano (e lascino) quelle cose che noi vi concedemmo.	37 'It has pleased us to accept the golden crown and the palm you have sent us, and we are disposedto make a general peace with you, and to write to the officials to grant you remissions.
38 E tutte quelle cose le quali concedemmo a voi, siano ferme; e le fortezze le quali avete edificate, siano vostre.	38 Everything that we have decreed concerning you remains in force, and the fortresses you have builtmay remain in your hands.
39 E ancora vi perdoniamo la ignoranza e li peccati insino al dì d' oggi; e la corona (dell' oro) la quale ci dovevate dare, rimettiamvi; e se alcuna altra cosa era tributaria in Ierusalem, già non sia più.	39 We pardon all offences, unwitting or intentional, hitherto committed, and remit the crown tax you nowowe us; and whatever other taxes were levied in Jerusalem are no longer to be levied.
40 E se per avventura alcuni di voi fossono acconci d'essere coscritti intra i nostri, siano coscritti; e sia intra noi pace.	40 If any of you are suitable for enrolment in our bodyguard, let them be enrol ed, and let there bepeace between us.'
41 E nel CLXX anno (del regno de' Greci) sì fu levato il giogo de' pagani dal popolo d' Israel.	41 The gentile yoke was thus lifted from Israel in the year 170,
42 E incominciarono a scrivere in tavole e scritte pubbliche, nel primo anno sotto Simone sommo sacerdote, grande duca e principe de' Giudei.	42 when our people began engrossing their documents and contracts: 'In the first year of Simon,eminent high priest, commander-in-chief and ethnarch of the Jews'.
43 In quel tempo (poco istante) Simone venne ad oste a Gaza, e attorniolla colla gente sua, e fece (edifici e) ingegni; e accostossi alla cittade (e combattella), e percosse una delle torri (della cittade), e fecela cadere.	43 About that time Simon laid siege to Gezer, surrounding it with his troops. He constructed a mobiletower, brought it up to the city, opened a breach in one of the bastions and took it.
44 E quegli che ne uscirono erano (tra gli edificii nella cittade, cioè) in una (fortezza la quale si chiamava) macchina; donde per questo nacque grande paura nella terra.	44 The men in the mobile tower sprang out into the city, where great confusion ensued.
45 E montarono quegli dentro della cittade sopra le mura, colle donne loro e con gli figliuoli, e colle gonnelle loro stracciate (in segno di paura e di dolore), e gridarono ad alta voce, e domandarono a Simone pace e concordia.	45 The citizens, accompanied by their wives and children, mounted the ramparts with their garmentstorn and loudly implored Simon to make peace with them:
46 E dissono: non ci trattare secondo le nostre malizie, ma secondo le tue misericordie, (e a te serviremo).	46 'Treat us', they said, 'not as our wickedness deserves, but as your mercy prompts you.'
47 E Simone umiliandosi non li disertò; ma misegli fuori della terra, e purgò le magioni dove erano stati gl' idoli; e allora entrò dentro con laude, benedicendo Dio.	47 Simon came to terms with them and stopped the fighting; but he expel ed them from the city, purifiedthe houses which contained idols, and then made his entry with songs of praise.
48 E gittandone fuori ogni bruttura, sì vi rimise uomini che osservassono la legge; e armò la terra, e fecevi abitazioni.	48 He banished al impurity from it, settled in it people who observed the Law, and having fortified it,built a residence there for himself.
49 Ora egli era vietato alli paesani di non vendere e di non comperare con quegli della ròcca di Ierusalem, e di non lasciargli passare; donde cominciarono a sostenere grande fame, e molti ne morirono di fame.	49 The occupants of the Citadel in Jerusalem, prevented as they were from coming out and going intothe countryside to buy and sel , were in desperate need of food, and numbers of them were being carried off bystarvation.
50 E chiesono mercede a Simone; ed egli si adumiliò a loro; e lasciògli andare, e purgòe la ròcca di contaminazioni.	50 They begged Simon to make peace with them, and he granted this, though he expel ed them andpurified the Citadel from its pollutions.
51 Ed entrovvi dentro a dì XXIII del secondo mese, nel CLXXI anno (del regno de' Greci), con laude e con rami di palma, e con cimbali e con citare, e con canti e inni; imperciò ch' era attritato il grande nimico d'Israel.	51 The Jews made their entry on the twenty-third day of the second month in the year 171, withacclamations and carrying palms, to the sound of lyres, cymbals and harps, chanting hymns and canticles, sincea great enemy had been crushed and thrown out of Israel. Simon made it a day of annual rejoicing.
52 E ordinòe che ogni anno questi dì si festeggiassono con letizia.	52 He fortified the Temple hil on the Citadel side, and took up residence there with his men.
53 E armòe il monte del tempio, il quale era a lato alla ròcca; e abitovvi egli, e quegli ch' erano con lui.	53 Since his son John had come to manhood, Simon appointed him general-in-chief, with his residencein Gezer.
54 E conobbe Simone, che il suo figliuolo Giovanni era uomo forte di guerra; e sì lo fece principe delle virtudi, cioè de' forti combattitori, (e di tutto il popolo); e abitòe a Gazara.
