1 Onde vedendo Ionata ch' era prosperevole il tempo (e la buona stagione l' aiutava), sì elesse ambasciadori, e mandogli a Roma a rinnovare con loro amistade.	1 And Jonathan saw that the time served him, and he chose certain men and sent them to Rome, to confirm and to renew the amity with them:
2 E in quello medesimo tenore mandò lettere alli Spartiati e ad altri luoghi (in una medesima forma).	2 And he sent letters to the Spartans, and to other places according to the same form.
3 Di che andarono a Roma, ed entrarono in corte, e dissono (l'ambasciata loro in questa forma): Ionata sommo sacerdote e la gente Giudea ci hanno mandati, che voi rinnoviate con loro amistade e la compagnia primaia.	3 And they went to Rome, and entered into the senate house, and said: Jonathan the high priest, and the nation of the Jews have sent us to renew the amity, and alliance as it was before.
4 Eli Romani diedono a loro lettere per luoghi a loro sudditi (onde doveano passare), acciò che gli conducessono in Giudea con pace.	4 And they gave them letters to their governors in every place, to conduct them into the land of Juda with peace.
5 E questo fu lo esemplo delle lettere, le quali Ionata mandò gli Spartiati:	5 And this is a copy of the letters which Jonathan wrote to the Spartans:
6 Ionata sommo sacerdote, e' suoi vecchi, e gli sacerdoti di Giudea, e tutto l' altro popolo, agli fratelli Spartiati salute.	6 Jonathan the high priest, and the ancients of the nation, and the priests, and the rest of the people of the Jews, to the Spartans, their brethren, greeting.
7 Già prima furono mandate lettere a Onia, sommo sacerdote, da Ario il quale regnava appo voi, come voi siete nostri fratelli, sì come contiene lo scritto ch' è posto di sotto.	7 There were letters sent long ago to Onias the high priest from Arius who reigned then among you, to signify that you are our brethren, as the copy here underwritten doth specify.
8 E ricevette Onia quello uomo, che fue a lui mandato, con onore; e ricevette le lettere le quali significavano della compagnia e della amistade.	8 And Onias received the ambassador with honour: and received the letters wherein there was mention made of the alliance, and amity.
9 Ma noi, conciofosse cosa che non abbisognassimo d'alcuna di queste cose, abbiendo ora consolazione de' santi libri, i quali sono nelle nostre mani,	9 We, though we needed none of these things, having for our comfort the holy books that are in our hands,
10 abbiamo voluto mandare a voi a rinnovare (con voi) l' amistade e la compagnia, acciò che per avventura non divegniamo stranieri da voi; certo molti tempi sono passati da poi che voi (non) mandaste a noi.	10 Chose rather to send to you to renew the brotherhood and friendship, lest we should become strangers to you altogether: for there is a long time passed since you sent to us.
11 E veramente ci ricordiamo di voi d'ogni tempo, sanza niuno intervallo, negli di solenni e negli altri dì che bisogna, ne' sacrificii che sì offriamo, e nell' altre osservazioni, sì come si conviene ed è lecito di ricordarsi de' fratelli.	11 We therefore at all times without ceasing, both in our festivals, and other days, wherein it is convenient, remember you in the sacrifices that we offer, and in our observances, as it is meet, and becoming to remember brethren.
12 Noi adunque ci rallegriamo della gloria vostra.	12 And we rejoice at your glory.
13 Ma noi siamo tutti occupati di molte tribulazioni e di molte battaglie; e hannoci combattuto li re li quali ci sono d' intorno.	13 But we have had many troubles and wars on every side, and the kings that are round about us, have fought against us.
14 Adunque non vogliamo essere molesti a voi, nè agli altri compagni nè amici nostri, in queste battaglie.	14 But we would not be troublesome to you, nor the rest of our allies and friends in these wars.
15 Imperò che avemo avuto aiutorio dal cielo, e siamo liberati, e li nostri nimici sono umiliati.	15 For we have had help from heaven, and we have been delivered, and our enemies are humbled.
16 E però (sappiate che noi) abbiamo eletto Numenio [figliuolo] di Antioco, e Antipatre figliuolo di Giasone, e mandatigli a' Romani, a rinnovare la compagnia e l' amistade di prima.	16 We have chosen therefore Numenius the son of Antiochus, and Antipater the son of Jason, and have sent them to the Romans to renew with them the former amity and alliance.
17 E abbiamo loro imposto, che siano con esso voi, rendendovi (grazie e) salute, e diano a voi le nostre lettere della rinnovazione della nostra fratellanza.	17 And we have commanded them to go also to you, and to salute you, and to deliver you our letters, concerning the renewing of our brotherhood.
18 E però farete bene a risponderci a queste cose.	18 And now you shall do well to give us an answer hereto.
19 Questo è il rescritto che mandò [ad] Onia:	19 And this is the copy of the letter which he had sent to Onias:
20 [Ario] re degli Spartiati a Ionata, grande sacerdote, salute.	20 Arius king of the Spartans to Onias the high priest, greeting.
21 Trovato è nella scrittura degli Spartiati e de' Giudei, ch' egli sono fratelli, e della schiatta di Abraam.	21 It is found in writing concerning the Spartans, and the Jews, that they are brethren, and that they are of the stock of Abraham.
22 Ora poi che queste cose conosciute avemo, fate bene a scrivere a noi della vostra pace.	22 And now since this is come to our knowledge, you do well to write to us of your prosperity.
23 Sì come noi abbiamo scritto a voi, le nostre pecore e le nostre possessioni sono vostre, e le vostre sono nostre; abbiamvi adunque mandato ad annunziare queste cose.	23 And we also have written back to you: That our cattle, and our possessions are yours: and yours, ours. We therefore have commanded that these things should be told you.
24 E intanto Ionata intese che gli principi di Demetrio erano tornati con maggior oste che prima, per combattere contro a lui.	24 Now Jonathan heard that the generals of Demetrius were come again with a greater army than before to fight against him.
25 E però egli uscì fuori di Ierusalem, e venne loro incontro nella contrada degli Amatiti; imperò che non diede loro spazio d' entrare nel suo territorio.	25 So he went out from Jerusalem, and met them in the land of Amath: for he gave them no time to enter into his country.
26 E mandò nel campo loro spie; e quando furono tornate, gli dissero che gl' inimici si aveano ordinato d' assalirlo di notte.	26 And he sent spies into their camp, and they came back and brought him word that they designed to come upon them in the night.
27 Onde, quando il sole fue tramonto, comandò Ionata alla sua gente, che veggiassono e fussono tutta notte con l'arme apparecchiati alla battaglia, e puose guardie (e agguati) intorno al suo campo.	27 And when the sun was set, Jonathan commanded his men to watch, and to be in arms all night long ready to fight, and he set sentinels round about the camp.
28 E quando li nimici sentirono che Ionata e la sua gente erano apparecchiati alla battaglia, sì dubitarono e impaurirono nell' animo loro; e accesono molti fuochi nel campo loro; (poi se ne fuggirono per paura).	28 And the enemies heard that Jonathan and his men were ready for battle, and they were struck with fear, and dread in their heart: and they kindled fires in their camp.
29 Ma Ionata e gli suoi non si addierono di ciò infino alla mattina (che loro se ne fossono fuggiti); imperò che gli rilucenti fuochi gl' ingannarono (che durarono tutta notte).	29 But Jonathan and they that were with him knew it not till the morning: for they saw the lights burning.
30 Allora Ionata (e la sua gente) si mise loro dietro, ma non gli poterono giugnere; imperò che loro aveano già passato il fiume (che si chiama) Eleutero.	30 And Jonathan pursued after them, but overtook them not: for they had passed the river Eleutherus.
31 Allora Ionata volse sua via verso li Arabi i quali si chiamavano Zabadei; (e assaligli) e percossegli, e ruboe le loro ricchezze.	31 And Jonathan turned upon the Arabians that are called Zabadeans: and he defeated them, and took the spoils of them.
32 E poi (incontanente) venne a Damasco, e campeggiando cercò tutto intorno la contrada.	32 And he went forward, and came to Damascus, and passed through all that country.
33 E intanto cavalcò Simone infino ad Ascalona e alle prossimane fortezze; e capitò a Ioppen, e presela;	33 Simon also went forth, and came as far as Ascalon, and the neighbouring fortresses, and he turned aside to Joppe, and took possession of it,
34 imperò che avea inteso che volevano dare. fornimento alla parte di Demetrio; e lasciovvi buone guardie per guardare la terra.	34 (For he heard that they designed to deliver the hold to them that took part with Demetrius,) and he put a garrison there to keep it.
35 Allora ritornoe Ionata, e radunòe (al consiglio) tutti i più vecchi del popolo; e ragionava con loro di edificare fortezze in Giudea,	35 And Jonathan came back, and called together the ancients of the people, and he took a resolution with them to build fortresses in Judea,
36 e di fare mura a Ierusalem, e di fare grandi e alte mura nel mezzo tra la città e la ròcca, acciò che fusse divisa da tutta la cittade, e fusse per sè, sì che non comperassono nè vendessono (insieme).	36 And to build up walls in Jerusalem, and raise a mount between the castle and the city, to separate it from the city, that so it might have no communication, and that they might neither buy nor sell.
37 E così si radunarono, ed edificarono la cittade; e cadde il muro il quale era sopra lo fossato dal lato d' oriente, e Ionata fece rifare il detto muro il quale si chiama Cafeteta.	37 And they came together to build up the city: for the wall that was upon the brook towards the east was broken down, and he repaired that which is called Caphetetha:
38 E Simone rifece Adiada in Sefela, e fornilla e armolla, e fecevi le porte e serrature.	38 And Simon built Adiada in Sephela, and fortified it, and set up gates and bars.
39 E conciofosse cosa che Trifone (del quale avemo parlato addietro) pensasse di regnare in Asia, e di porre a sè corona, e d' uccidere in prima lo re Antioco,	39 Now when Tryphon had conceived a design to make himself king of Asia, and to take the crown, and to stretch out his hand against king Antiochus:
40 dubitando che per l'avventura Ionata non lo impedisse, egli cercava (di ingannare Ionata, e) di prenderlo e di ucciderlo. E però si levò suso, e venne in Betsan; (e mandò a Ionata, che gli venisse incontro, però che voleva regnare in Asia).	40 Fearing lest Jonathan would not suffer him, but would fight against him: he sought to seize upon him, and to kill him. So he rose up and came to Bethsan.
41 Allora Ionata gli venne incontro (e in aiuto) con XL milia uomini eletti (e insegnati) a battaglia, e venne in Betsan.	41 And Jonathan went out to meet him with forty thousand men chosen for battle, and came to Bethsan.
42 E veggendo Trifone, che Ionata era venuto (in suo aiuto) con grande oste, (d' incominciare sua impresa) temette (molto nè di metterli mano addosso).	42 Now when Tryphon saw that Jonathan came with a great army, he durst not stretch forth his hand against him,
43 E fecegli grande onore, e laudollo inanzi a tutti i suoi amici, e diedegli molti doni; e mandò a tutta la sua gente, che lo ubbidissono sì come sè medesimo.	43 But received him with honour, and commended him to all his friends, and gave him presents: and he commanded his troops to obey him, as himself.
44 E poi disse a Ionata: per che hai affaticato tutto il tuo popolo (in nostro servigio), conciosia cosa che non ci bisogni di combattere con persona?	44 And he said to Jonathan: Why hast thou troubled all the people, whereas we have no war?
45 E però lasciagli ritornare a casa loro; ed eleggi teco alquanti uomini, e verrai meco a Tolemaida, e darollati con tutte l'altre fortezze, e accomandarotti l'oste, e tutti gli uffici del reggimento, e poi me n'anderoe; però che per questo sono venuto.	45 Now therefore send them back to their own houses: and choose thee a few men that may be with thee, and come with me to Ptolemais, and I will deliver it to thee, and the rest of the strong holds, and the army, and all that have any charge, and I will return and go away: for this is the cause of my coming.
46 E Ionata gli credette, e fece sì come egli gli disse, e diè commiato alla sua oste; e tornarono (tutti gli uomini) in Giudea.	46 And Jonathan believed him, and did as he said: and sent away his army, and they departed into the land of Juda:
47 E rimase con lui tre milia uomini solamente; de' quali egli ne rimandò in Galilea due milia, e mille n' andarono con lui.	47 But he kept with him three thousand men: of whom he sent two thousand into Galilee, and one thousand went with him.
48 E così tosto come Ionata fue entrato in Tolemaida, allora i Tolemaidi chiusono le porte, e presono Ionata; e tutti gli altri suoi compagni uccisono, mettendogli al taglio delle spade.	48 Now as soon as Jonathan entered into Ptolemais, they of Ptolemais shut the gates of the city, and took him: and all them that came in with him they slew with the sword.
49 E (fatto questo) Trifone mandò (incontanente) la sua oste e gli cavalieri in Galilea nel grande campo, acciò che uccidessono tutti i compagni di Ionata.	49 Then Tryphon sent an army and horsemen into Galilee, and into the great plain to destroy all Jonathan's company.
50 Ma quando loro seppono ch' egli era stato preso, e morto [con] tutti li suoi compagni, loro medesimi presono conforto, e uscirono fuori alla battaglia.	50 But they, when they understood that Jonathan and all that were with him were taken and slain, encouraged one another, and went out ready for battle.
51 E veggendo quegli che v' erano venuti, che loro mostravano loro il volto, sì si ritornarono indietro.	51 Then they that had come after them, seeing that they stood for their lives, returned back.
52 E gli Giudei si tornarono in pace a casa loro. Ora tutti quegli ch' erano stati con Ionata feciono grandissimo pianto (e lamento); e tutto l'altro popolo piansono molto per questa perdita.	52 Whereupon they all came peaceably into the land of Juda. And they bewailed Jonathan, and them that had been with him, exceedingly: and Israel mourned with great lamentation.
53 Ora avvenne che tutte le genti dintorno si studiarono di distruggere la gente Giudea, dicendo intra loro:	53 Then all the heathens that were round about them, sought to destroy them. For they said:
54 (Ora è il tempo di distruggerli, da poi che) più non hanno il loro principe nè aiutatore; combattiamo contro a loro, (e meniamgli a fine), e togliamo a questi uomini la loro memoria.	54 They have no prince, nor any to help them: now therefore let us make war upon them, and take away the memory of them from amongst mem.
