1 Prima della festa di Pasqua sapendo Gesù che era venuta la sua ora di passare da questo mondo al Padre, avendo amato i suoi che erano nel mondo, li amò sino alla fine.	1 Before the festival of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his hour had come to pass from this world tothe Father, having loved those who were his in the world, loved them to the end.
2 E fatta la cena, avendo già il diavolo messo in cuore a Giuda di Simone Iscariote di tradirlo,	2 They were at supper, and the devil had already put it into the mind of Judas Iscariot son of Simon, tobetray him.
3 sapendo che il Padre gli aveva dato tutto nelle mani, e come, venuto da Dio, a Dio tornava,	3 Jesus knew that the Father had put everything into his hands, and that he had come from God andwas returning to God,
4 si alzò da tavola, depose la veste, e preso un asciugatoio, se lo cinse.	4 and he got up from table, removed his outer garments and, taking a towel, wrapped it round his waist;
5 Poi versata dell'acqua in un catino, cominciò a lavare i piedi ai discepoli, e ad asciugarli con l'asciugatoio di cui era cinto.	5 he then poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with thetowel he was wearing.
6 Venne dunque a Simon Pietro. E Pietro gli disse: Signore, tu lavarmi i piedi?	6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, 'Lord, are you going to wash my feet?'
7 Gli rispose Gesù: Quel che fo' tu ora non lo comprendi; ma lo saprai in avvenire.	7 Jesus answered, 'At the moment you do not know what I am doing, but later you wil understand.'
8 E Pietro: Tu non mi laverai i piedi in eterno! Gesù gli rispose: Se non ti laverò non avrai parte con me.	8 'Never!' said Peter. 'You shal never wash my feet.' Jesus replied, 'If I do not wash you, you can haveno share with me.' Simon Peter said,
9 Allora, Signore, esclamò Simon Pietro, non soltanto i piedi, ma anche le mani e il capo!	9 'Well then, Lord, not only my feet, but my hands and my head as wel !'
10 E Gesù replicò: Chi è lavato non ha bisogno che di lavarsi i piedi, per essere tutto puro. E voi siete puri, ma non tutti.	10 Jesus said, 'No one who has had a bath needs washing, such a person is clean all over. You too areclean, though not all of you are.'
11 Sapeva bene chi l'avrebbe tradito; per questo disse: Non siete tutti puri.	11 He knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said, 'though not al of you are'.
12 Dopo aver dunque lavati loro i piedi, riprese le sue vesti, e rimessosi a mensa, disse loro: Intendete quello che vi ho fatto?	12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments again he went back to the table. 'Doyou understand', he said, 'what I have done to you?
13 Voi mi chiamate Maestro e Signore, e dite bene, perchè lo sono.	13 You cal me Master and Lord, and rightly; so I am.
14 Se dunque v'ho lavati i piedi io, Maestro e Signore, dovete anche voi lavarvi i piedi l'un l'altro.	14 If I, then, the Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you must wash each other's feet.
15 Io infatti vi ho dato l'esempio, affinchè come ho fatto io, facciate anche voi.	15 I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done to you.
16 In verità, in verità vi dico: Non c'è servo maggiore del suo padrone; nè apostolo da più di chi lo ha mandato.	16 'In al truth I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, no messenger is greater than the one whosent him.
17 Sapendo queste cose sarete beati se le metterete in pratica.	17 'Now that you know this, blessed are you if you behave accordingly.
18 Non parlo di voi tutti, so quali ho eletti; ma si deve adempire la Scrittura; uno che mangia il pane con me leverà contrò di me il suo calcagno.	18 I am not speaking about al of you: I know the ones I have chosen; but what scripture says must befulfil ed: 'He who shares my table takes advantage of me.
19 Ve lo dico ora prima che avvenga, affinché, avvenuto che sia, crediate che son io.	19 I tel you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen you may believe that I am He.
20 In verità, in verità vi dico: chi accoglie colui elio avrò mandato, accoglie me, o chi accoglie me, riceve colui che mi ha mandato.	20 In all truth I tell you, whoever welcomes the one I send, welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me,welcomes the one who sent me.'
21 Dette queste cose, Gesù si turbò nello spirito, e parlando apertamente, disse: In verità, in verità vi dico, che uno di voi mi tradirà.	21 Having said this, Jesus was deeply disturbed and declared, 'In al truth I tel you, one of you is goingto betray me.'
22 Cominciarono perciò i discepoli a guardarsi l'un l'altro, non sapendo a chi alludesse.	22 The disciples looked at each other, wondering whom he meant.
23 Stava uno dei discepoli, quello da Gesù prediletto, posando sul seno di lui.	23 The disciple Jesus loved was reclining next to Jesus;
24 A questo fe' cenno Simon Pietro, e chiese: Di chi parla?	24 Simon Peter signed to him and said, 'Ask who it is he means,'
25 E quello, posato com'era sul petto di Gesù, chiese a lui: Signore, chi è mai?	25 so leaning back close to Jesus' chest he said, 'Who is it, Lord?'
26 Gesù gli rispose: E' quello a cui darò un pezzetto di pane intinto. E intinto un pezzetto di pane lo diede a Giuda di Simone Iscariote.	26 Jesus answered, 'It is the one to whom I give the piece of bread that I dip in the dish.' And when hehad dipped the piece of bread he gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot.
27 E dopo quel boccone Satana entrò in lui. E Gesù gli disse: Quello che fai fallo presto.	27 At that instant, after Judas had taken the bread, Satan entered him. Jesus then said, 'What you aregoing to do, do quickly.'
28 Ma nessuno dei commensali comprese perchè egli avesse così parlato.	28 None of the others at table understood why he said this.
29 Difatti alcuni pensavano, che tenendo Giuda la borsa, Gesù gli avesse detto: Compra quanto ci occorre per la festa, o che desse qualche cosa ai poveri.	29 Since Judas had charge of the common fund, some of them thought Jesus was telling him, 'Buy whatwe need for the festival,' or tel ing him to give something to the poor.
30 Ma Giuda, preso il boccone, partì subito. Ed era notte.	30 As soon as Judas had taken the piece of bread he went out. It was night.
31 Uscito che fu Giuda, Gesù disse: Ora è stato glorificato il Figlio dell'uomo: e Dio è stato glorificato in lui:	31 When he had gone, Jesus said: Now has the Son of man been glorified, and in him God has beenglorified.
32 e se Dio è stato in lui glorificato, lo glorificherà in se stesso e presto.	32 If God has been glorified in him, God wil in turn glorify him in himself, and wil glorify him very soon.
33 Figliolini, son con voi ancora per poco. Mi cercherete, ma, come dissi ai Giudei: dove sono io non potete venire voi, or lo dico anche a voi.	33 Little children, I shal be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and, as I told the Jews,where I am going, you cannot come.
34 Vi dò un comandamento nuovo, d'amarvi scambievolmente: amatevi l'un l'altro come io vi ho amati.	34 I give you a new commandment: love one another; you must love one another just as I have lovedyou.
35 Da questo conosceran tutti che siete miei discepoli, se avrete mutuo amore.	35 It is by your love for one another, that everyone wil recognise you as my disciples.
36 Gli disse altera Simon Pietro: Signore, dove vai? Gesù gli rispose: Dove vo io non puoi seguirmi per ora, ma più tardi mi seguirai.	36 Simon Peter said, 'Lord, where are you going?' Jesus replied, 'Now you cannot fol ow me where I amgoing, but later you shall fol ow me.'
37 Replicò Pietro: E perchè non posso ora, Signore, seguirti? Darò per te la vita.	37 Peter said to him, 'Why can I not fol ow you now? I will lay down my life for you.'
38 Gesù gli disse: Tu darai la vita per me? In verità, in verità ti dico: non canterà il gallo, che tu mi avrai rinnegato per tre volte.	38 'Lay down your life for me?' answered Jesus. 'In al truth I tel you, before the cock crows you wilhave disowned me three times.'
