1 « Per i peccati da voi commessi dinanzi a Dio voi sarete condotti schiavi a Babilonia da Nabucodonosor, re dei Babilonesi.	1 A copy of a letter which Jeremiah sent to those who were to be taken to Babylon as captives by the king of the Babylonians, to give them the message which God had commanded him.
2 Entrati che sarete in Babilonia, vi starete per moltissimi anni, per lungo tempo, fino a sette generazioni, e dopo ciò vi farò venir via in pace.	2 Because of the sins which you have committed before God, you will be taken to Babylon as captives by Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Babylonians.
3 Or voi vedrete a Babilonia degli dèi d'oro, d'argento, di pietra, di legno, portali sulle spalle per incutere timore alle nazioni.	3 Therefore when you have come to Babylon you will remain there for many years, for a long time, up to seven generations; after that I will bring you away from there in peace.
4 Guardate di non imitare il far degli stranieri, di non aver paura, di non temerli.	4 Now in Babylon you will see gods made of silver and gold and wood, which are carried on men's shoulders and inspire fear in the heathen.
5 E quando vedrete che la folla davanti e di dietro li adora, dite nel vostro cuore: « Bisogna adorare Te, o Signore».	5 So take care not to become at all like the foreigners or to let fear for these gods possess you, when you see the multitude before and behind them worshiping them.
6 Il mio angelo è con voi ed io stesso prenderò cura della vostra vita.	6 But say in your heart, "It is thou, O Lord, whom we must worship."
7 Infatti la loro lingua è limata dall'artefice, ed essi, sebbene siano dorati e inargentati, sono menzogne, e non possono parlare.	7 For my angel is with you, and he is watching your lives.
8 E come a fanciulla che ama gli ornamenti, preso l'oro, sono stati fatti.	8 Their tongues are smoothed by the craftsman, and they themselves are overlaid with gold and silver; but they are false and cannot speak.
9 Certo i loro dèi hanno sul capo delle corone d'oro, e da essi i sacerdoti tolgono l'oro e l'argento e se l'appropriano,	9 People take gold and make crowns for the heads of their gods, as they would for a girl who loves ornaments;
10 e di esso fanno parte alle prostitute, e con esso adornano le meretrici, e poi, quando l'hanno riavuto dalle meretrici, di nuovo ne abbelliscono i loro dèi.	10 and sometimes the priests secretly take gold and silver from their gods and spend it upon themselves,
11 Questi poi sono incapaci di liberarsi dalla ruggine e dalla tignola,	11 and even give some of it to the harlots in the brothel. They deck their gods out with garments like men--these gods of silver and gold and wood,
12 e quando li hanno rivestiti di porpora, lavan loro la faccia, per la polvere del tempio che è in abbondanza addosso a loro.	12 which cannot save themselves from rust and corrosion. When they have been dressed in purple robes,
13 (Uno di questi idoli) tiene in mano lo scettro, come un uomo, come un governatore del paese, e non può far morir chi l'offende.	13 their faces are wiped because of the dust from the temple, which is thick upon them.
14 Ha ancora la spada e la scure in mano, ma non può salvarsi dalla guerra e dai ladri. Per questo sia a voi noto che non son dèi.	14 Like a local ruler the god holds a scepter, though unable to destroy any one who offends it.
15 Non li temete, adunque. Come diviene per l'uomo inutile un vaso rotto, così sono i loro dèi.	15 It has a dagger in its right hand, and has an axe; but it cannot save itself from war and robbers.
16 Collocati che sono nel tempio, loro si copron gli occhi di polvere smossa dai piedi di chi entra,	16 Therefore they evidently are not gods; so do not fear them.
17 e come per colui che ha offeso il re son chiuse da ogni parte le porte, come pure al morto messo nel sepolcro, così i sacerdoti assicurano le porte con serrature e sbarre, perchè non siano spogliati dai ladri.	17 For just as one's dish is useless when it is broken, so are the gods of the heathen, when they have been set up in the temples. Their eyes are full of the dust raised by the feet of those who enter.
18 Accendono pure loro delle lampade, e molte, delle quali non ne possono vedere nemmeno una: sono dunque nel tempio come travi.	18 And just as the gates are shut on every side upon a man who has offended a king, as though he were sentenced to death, so the priests make their temples secure with doors and locks and bars, in order that they may not be plundered by robbers.
19 Dicono che i vermi, i quali vengon su dalla terra, mangiano loro il cuore, quando rodono loro e i loro vestimenti, ed essi non sentono.	19 They light lamps, even more than they light for themselves, though their gods can see none of them.
20 Le loro facce diventano nere dal fumo che si fa nel tempio.	20 They are just like a beam of the temple, but men say their hearts have melted, when worms from the earth devour them and their robes. They do not notice
21 Sopra il loro corpo e sopra il loro capo volano le civette e le rondini e gli altri uccelli e fanno lo stesso anche i gatti.	21 when their faces have been blackened by the smoke of the temple.
22 Da ciò imparate che non son dèi: non li temete adunque.	22 Bats, swallows, and birds light on their bodies and heads; and so do cats.
23 Ed anche l'oro che hanno addosso è per mostra, e se uno non li ripulisce dalla ruggine, non brilleranno, ed anche quando furono fusi non sentirono niente.	23 From this you will know that they are not gods; so do not fear them.
24 Furono comperati a prezzi favolosi, essi che non hanno vita.	24 As for the gold which they wear for beauty--they will not shine unless some one wipes off the rust; for even when they were being cast, they had no feeling.
25 Non avendo piedi son portati sulle spalle, mostrando cosi la loro vergognosa impotenza agli uomini. Sian confusi anche quelli che li adorano.	25 They are bought at any cost, but there is no breath in them.
26 Così se cascan per terra, da se stessi non si rialzano, e se qualcuno non li mette ritti, da se non ci staranno, e come a morti son messe davanti ad essi delle offerte.	26 Having no feet, they are carried on men's shoulders, revealing to mankind their worthlessness.
27 Le loro vittime le vendono i sacerdoti e a loro profitto, ed anche le loro donne ne prendono il meglio, senza dar nulla all'ammalato e al mendico.	27 And those who serve them are ashamed because through them these gods are made to stand, lest they fall to the ground. If any one sets one of them upright, it cannot move itself; and if it is tipped over, it cannot straighten itself; but gifts are placed before them just as before the dead.
28 Le donne che da poco hanno partorito e quelle che hanno il corso toccano i loro sacrifizi. Da ciò dunque ricavate che non son dèi, e non li temete.	28 The priests sell the sacrifices that are offered to these gods and use the money; and likewise their wives preserve some with salt, but give none to the poor or helpless.
29 E perchè son chiamati dèi? Perchè le donne portano a questi dèi d'argento, d'oro, di legno,	29 Sacrifices to them may be touched by women in menstruation or at childbirth. Since you know by these things that they are not gods, do not fear them.
30 e nei loro templi stanno i sacerdoti con tuniche stracciate, col capo e la barba rasa, col capo nudo,	30 For why should they be called gods? Women serve meals for gods of silver and gold and wood;
31 e dan ruggiti, alzando la voce davanti ai loro dèi, come si fa nella cena di un morto.	31 and in their temples the priests sit with their clothes rent, their heads and beards shaved, and their heads uncovered.
32 I sacerdoti tolgon loro le vesti e ne ricoprono le mogli e i figlioli.	32 They howl and shout before their gods as some do at a funeral feast for a man who has died.
33 E vien fatto loro del male o del bene, non possono rendere il contraccambio: sono incapaci di stabilire un re e di toglierlo.	33 The priests take some of the clothing of their gods to clothe their wives and children.
34 Parimenti non possono dare ricchezze nè rendere il male. Se uno fa ad essi un voto e non l'adempie, anche di questo non se ne curano.	34 Whether one does evil to them or good, they will not be able to repay it. They cannot set up a king or depose one.
35 Sono incapaci di liberare l'uomo dalla morte, di salvare il debole dal prepotente.	35 Likewise they are not able to give either wealth or money; if one makes a vow to them and does not keep it, they will not require it.
36 Non rendono la vista al cieco, non tolgono l'uoino dalla miseria.	36 They cannot save a man from death or rescue the weak from the strong.
37 Non avran pietà della vedova, non faran del bene agli orfani.	37 They cannot restore sight to a blind man; they cannot rescue a man who is in distress.
38 Son simili alle pietre della montagna questi loro dèi di legno, di pietra, d'oro, d'argento, e coloro che li adorano saranno confusi.	38 They cannot take pity on a widow or do good to an orphan.
39 Come dunque si potrà credere o dire che sono dèi?	39 These things that are made of wood and overlaid with gold and silver are like stones from the mountain, and those who serve them will be put to shame.
40 Inoltre gli stessi Caldei non li rispettano: quando sentono che uno è muto e non può parlare, lo presentano a Bel, chiedendogli che parli,	40 Why then must any one think that they are gods, or call them gods? Besides, even the Chaldeans themselves dishonor them;
41 come se potessero sentire quelli che non hanno moto: e quando han capito lo abbandonano, perchè i loro dèi non han sentimento.	41 for when they see a dumb man, who cannot speak, they bring him and pray Bel that the man may speak, as though Bel were able to understand.
42 Delle donne cinte di corde stanno a seder per le strade, bruciando noccioli d'ulive,	42 Yet they themselves cannot perceive this and abandon them, for they have no sense.
43 e quando una di esse, condotta via da uno che passa, ha dormito con lui, rinfaccia alla sua vicina di non essere stata stimata da tanto come essa, e che la sua fune non è stata rotta.	43 And the women, with cords about them, sit along the passageways, burning bran for incense; and when one of them is led off by one of the passers-by and is lain with, she derides the woman next to her, because she was not as attractive as herself and her cord was not broken.
44 Così tutto ciò che si fa a loro riguardo è menzogna. Come dunque si potrà credere o dire che siano dèi?	44 Whatever is done for them is false. Why then must any one think that they are gods, or call them gods?
45 Sono stati fatti da artigiani, orefici, e non saranno altro che quello che vogliono i sacerdoti.	45 They are made by carpenters and goldsmiths; they can be nothing but what the craftsmen wish them to be.
46 Gli stessi operai che li fanno non son di lunga durata, e potranno dunque esser dèi i lavori Ditti da i loro?	46 The men that make them will certainly not live very long themselves; how then can the things that are made by them be gods?
47 Hanno lasciato imposta­ra e obbrobrio ai loro posteri.	47 They have left only lies and reproach for those who come after.
48 Quando loro sovrasta guerra o sventure, i sacerdoti van pensando dove rifugiarsi coi loro (dèi).	48 For when war or calamity comes upon them, the priests consult together as to where they can hide themselves and their gods.
49 Come dunque si può credere che sian dèi quelli che non liberano dalla guerra, non salvano dalle sventure?	49 How then can one fail to see that these are not gods, for they cannot save themselves from war or calamity?
50 Essendo non altro che legno indorato e inargentato, si conoscerà il futuro da tutte le nazioni e dai re che son falsità, essendo chiaro che non son dèi, ma opere delle mani degli uomini, e che in essa non v'è alcuna operazione di Dio.	50 Since they are made of wood and overlaid with gold and silver, it will afterward be known that they are false.
51 E da che dunque conoscesi che non son dèi, ma opera delle mani degli uomini, e che in essi non v'è alcuna operazione di Dio?	51 It will be manifest to all the nations and kings that they are not gods but the work of men's hands, and that there is no work of God in them.
52 Non danno il re ad un regno, e non daranno agli uomini l'acqua.	52 Who then can fail to know that they are not gods?
53 Non sapranno giudicare le cause, e non libereranno le province dalle ingiustizie, perchè nulla possono, simili a cornacchie tra il cielo e la terra.	53 For they cannot set up a king over a country or give rain to men.
54 E quando s'appiccherà il fuoco al tempio degli dèi di legno, d'argento e d'oro, gli stessi loro sacerdoti certo fuggiranno e si metteranno in salvo, ma essi, come travi, vi bruceranno dentro.	54 They cannot judge their own cause or deliver one who is wronged, for they have no power; they are like crows between heaven and earth.
55 Essi poi non faran resistenza nè al re, nè alla guerra. Come adunque si può credere e ritenere che sian dèi?	55 When fire breaks out in a temple of wooden gods overlaid with gold or silver, their priests will flee and escape, but the gods will be burnt in two like beams.
56 Non si potranno salvare nè lai ladri nè dai briganti gli dèi di legno, di pietra, indorati, inargentati; quelli, più forti di loro,	56 Besides, they can offer no resistance to a king or any enemies. Why then must any one admit or think that they are gods?
57 torranno ad essi l'oro, l'argento, il vestito del quale son copersi e se ne andranno, ed essi non si potranno dare alcun aiuto.	57 Gods made of wood and overlaid with silver and gold are not able to save themselves from thieves and robbers.
58 Così val più un re che mostra le sue forze, un vaso utile nella casa, di cui il padrone si potrà vantare, la porta d'una casa, che custodisce ciò che in essa si trova, dei falsi dèi.	58 Strong men will strip them of their gold and silver and of the robes they wear, and go off with this booty, and they will not be able to help themselves.
59 Così il sole, la luna, le stelle, col loro splendore, mandate per essere utili, obbediscono;	59 So it is better to be a king who shows his courage, or a household utensil that serves its owner's need, than to be these false gods; better even the door of a house that protects its contents, than these false gods; better also a wooden pillar in a palace, than these false gods.
60 così pure il fulmine, quando apparisce, si fa distinguere, e il vento soffia su tutti i paesi,	60 For sun and moon and stars, shining and sent forth for service, are obedient.
61 e le nubi, quando è loro comandato da Dio di percorrere tutto il globo, eseguiscono gli ordini avuti,	61 So also the lightning, when it flashes, is widely seen; and the wind likewise blows in every land.
62 ed anche il fuoco, mandato dall'alto a consumare i monti e le selve, eseguisce quanto gli è ordinato, questi (idoli) invece non son da paragonarsi ad una di queste cose, nè per bellezza nè per forza.	62 When God commands the clouds to go over the whole world, they carry out his command.
63 Dunque non si può nè credere, nè dire che essi siano dèi, quando non possono nè discernere il giusto, nè far qualche cosa agli uomini.	63 And the fire sent from above to consume mountains and woods does what it is ordered. But these idols are not to be compared with them in appearance or power.
64 Conoscendo adunque che non son dèi, non li temete.	64 Therefore one must not think that they are gods nor call them gods, for they are not able either to decide a case or to do good to men.
65 Essi sono incapaci di maledire i re o di benedire;	65 Since you know then that they are not gods, do not fear them.
66 e non faran vedere alle nazioni dei segni nel cielo, non splenderanno come il sole, non faran lume come la luna.	66 For they can neither curse nor bless kings;
67 Le bestie son da più di loro, perchè posson fuggire al coperto, e giovare a se stesse.	67 they cannot show signs in the heavens and among the nations, or shine like the sun or give light like the moon.
68 É' dunque a noi manifesto che in nessuna maniera possono essere dèi; dunque non li temete.	68 The wild beasts are better than they are, for they can flee to cover and help themselves.
69 E come in un campo di cocomeri uno spauracchio non guarda niente, così sono i loro dèi di legno, d'argento e d'oro.	69 So we have no evidence whatever that they are gods; therefore do not fear them.
70 E come in un orto il biancospino, sul quale vanno a posarsi tutti gli uccelli, e come un morto gettato nelle tenebre sono i loro dèi di legno indorati, inargentati.	70 Like a scarecrow in a cucumber bed, that guards nothing, so are their gods of wood, overlaid with gold and silver.
71 Anche dalla porpora e dallo scarlatto, che intigna addosso a loro, potete capire che non son dèi. Ed anche essi stessi finalmente saranno divorati, e saranno la vergogna del paese.	71 In the same way, their gods of wood, overlaid with gold and silver, and like a thorn bush in a garden, on which every bird sits; or like a dead body cast out in the darkness.
72 In miglior condizione è l'uomo giusto, che non ha idoli, perchè sarà lontano dall'ignominia ».	72 By the purple and linen that rot upon them you will know that they are not gods; and they will finally themselves be consumed, and be a reproach in the land.
	73 Better therefore is a just man who has no idols, for he will be far from reproach.
