1 L'anno centosettantadue, il re Demetrio, messo insieme il suo esercito, andò nella Media, a radunar truppe ausiliarie, per combattere Trifone.	1 In the year 172, King Demetrius assembled his forces and marched into Media to raise help for thefight against Trypho.
2 Ma Arsace re della Persia, avendo sentito che Demetrio era entrato nel suo territorio, mandò uno dei suoi generali, perchè lo prendesse vivo e lo portasse a lui.	2 When Arsaces king of Persia and Media heard that Demetrius had entered his territory, he sent one ofhis generals to capture him alive.
3 E (il generale) andò, mise in rotta l'esercito di Demetrio, e prese Demetrio e lo condusse ad Arsace, che lo fece mettere in prigione.	3 The general defeated the army of Demetrius, seized him and brought him to Arsaces, who imprisonedhim.
4 Il paese di Giuda fu tutto in pace durante tutto il tempo di Simone, il quale cercò i vantaggi della sua nazione, che vide sempre con piacere la sua potenza e la sua gloria.	4 The country was at peace throughout the days of Simon. He sought the good of his nation and theywere wel pleased with his authority, as with his magnificence, throughout his life.
5 Oltre a tutte le sue gesta gloriose, egli prese e ridusse a porto Ioppe, e lo fece scalo delle isole del mare.	5 To crown his titles to glory, he took Joppa and made it a harbour, gaining access to the MediterraneanIsles.

7 E radunò gran numero di prigionieri, ed ebbe il dominio di Gazara e di Betsura e della cittadella, e ne tolse via le immondezze, e non c'era chi potesse resistergli.	7 resettling a host of captives. He conquered Gezer, Beth-Zur and the Citadel, ridding them of everyimpurity, and no one could resist him.
8 E ciascuno coltivava in pace la sua terra, e la terra di Giuda dava le sue raccolte, e le piante dei campi davano il loro frutto.	8 The people farmed their land in peace; the land gave its produce, the trees of the plain their fruit.
9 Gli anziani stavano assisi nelle piazze, e s'intrattenevano su ciò che era di vantaggio al paese, la gioventù si copriva di splendide vesti e di abiti da guerra.	9 The elders sat at ease in the squares, all their talk was of their prosperity; the young men woresplendid armour.
10 Simone distribuiva i viveri alle città, e le rendeva come tante fortezze, in modo che il suo nome e la sua gloria si sparse fino agli ultimi confini del mondo.	10 He kept the towns supplied with provisions and furnished with fortifications, until his fame resoundedto the ends of the earth.
11 Egli diede la pace al paese, e Israele ne esultò con grande gioia.	11 He established peace in the land, and Israel knew great joy.
12 Così ciascuno stava assiso all'ombra della sua vite e all'ombra del suo fico, e nessuno veniva a spaventarli.	12 Each man sat under his own vine and his own fig tree, and there was no one to make them afraid.
13 Non restava più sulla terra chi facesse loro guerra: i re in quel tempo erano abbattuti.	13 No enemy was left in the land to fight them, the very kings of those times had been crushed.
14 Egli fu il protettore degli umili del suo popolo, e, zelante della legge, fece sparire gl'iniqui e i malvagi.	14 He encouraged the afflicted members of his people, suppressing every wicked man and renegade.He strove to observe the Law,
15 Glorificò il santuario e moltiplicò i vasi santi.	15 and gave new splendour to the Temple, enriching it with many sacred vessels.
16 Quando la notizia della morte di Gionata giunse fino a Roma e a Sparta, recò loro gran dispiacere;	16 When it became known in Rome and as far as Sparta that Jonathan was dead, people were deeplygrieved.
17 ma avendo sentito che il suo fratello Simone era stato fatto sommo sacerdote in luogo di lui, e che aveva il dominio della regione e delle città che vi erano,	17 But as soon as they heard that his brother Simon had succeeded him as high priest and was masterof the country and the cities in it,
18 scrissero a lui in tavole di bronzo, per rinnovare l'amicizia e l'alleanza fatta con Giuda e con Gionata suoi fratelli.	18 they wrote to him on bronze tablets to renew the treaty of friendship and al iance which they hadmade with his brothers, Judas and Jonathan,
19 E le lettere furono lette a Gerusalemme davanti a tutta l'assemblea. Ecco la copia della lettera mandata dagli Spartani:	19 and the document was read out before the assembly in Jerusalem.

21 Gli ambasciatori, mandati da voi al nostro popolo, ci hanno fatto sapere la vostra gloria e felicità e contentezza, e la loro venuta ci ha recato molto piacere.	21 'The ambassadors whom you sent to our people have informed us of your glory and prosperity, andwe are delighted with their visit.
22 E abbiamo fatto scrivere nelle assemblee del popolo ciò che essi hanno detto, cioè: Numenio di Antioco, e Antipatro di Giasone, ambasciatori dei Giudei, son venuti da noi, per rinnovare con noi l'antica amicizia.	22 We have recorded their declarations in the minutes of our public assemblies, as fol ows, "Numeniusson of Antiochus, and Antipater son of Jason, ambassadors of the Jews, came to us to renew their friendshipwith us.
23 È piaciuto al popolo di accogliere tali uomini con onore, e di porre una copia delle loro parole nei libri particolari del popolo, perchè sia un ricordo per il popolo degli Spartani; e una copia di tale scrittura l'abbiamo mandata al sommo sacerdote Simone ».	23 And it was the people's pleasure to receive these personages with honour and to deposit a copy oftheir statements in the public archives, so that the people of Sparta might preserve a record of them. A copy wasalso made for Simon the high priest." '
24 Di poi Simone mandò a Roma Numenio, con un grande scudo d'oro che pesava mille mine, a stabilire con essi l'alleanza. Quando il popolo romano sentì	24 After this, Simon sent Numenius to Rome as the bearer of a large golden shield weighing a thousandmina, to confirm the alliance with them.

So they recorded an inscription on bronze tablets and set it up on pil ars on Mount Zion.

32 ma Simone si oppose e combattè pel suo popolo, e spese molto danaro armando gli uomini di valore della sua nazione e dando loro la paga.	32 Simon next came forward to fight for his nation: spending much of his personal wealth on arming hisnation's fighting men and on providing their pay;
33 Egli fortificò le città della Giudea, e Betsura, ai confini della Giudea, dove prima erano le armi nemiche, e vi pose un presidio di Giudei.	33 fortifying the towns of Judaea, as wel as Beth-Zur on the Judaean frontier where the enemy arsenalhad formerly been, and stationing in it a garrison of Jewish soldiers;
34 Fortificò Ioppe, sulla spiaggia del mare, e Gazara, che è ai i confini di Azoto, dove prima erano i nemici, e vi pose dei Giudei con tutto ciò che poteva servire a loro difesa.	34 fortifying Joppa on the coast, and Gezer on the borders of Azotus, a place formerly inhabited by theenemy, founding a Jewish colony there, and providing the settlers with everything they needed to set them ontheir feet;
35 Il popolo, vedendo le gesta di Simone, la gloria che si proponeva di dare alla sua nazione, lo dichiarò suo duce e principe dei sacerdoti, a causa di tutte queste cose da lui fatte, e della giustizia e della fede da lui conservata alla sua nazione, e per avere egli cercato ogni modo d'ingrandire il suo popolo.	35 'In consequence of which, the people, aware of Simon's loyalty and of the glory which he wasdetermined to win for his nation, have made him their ethnarch and high priest, for all his services and for theintegrity and loyalty which he has shown towards his nation, and for having by every means sought to enhancehis people's power;
36 Durante la sua vita (tutto) ha prosperato nelle sue mani, tanto che sono state cacciate le nazioni dai territori da i loro occupati, e quelli che erano nella città di David, in Gerusalemme, nella cittadella, da cui uscivano a profanare tutto ciò che era intorno al santuario, facendo grandi insulti alla sua santità.	36 'It has fal en to him in his time to expel the foreigners from his country, including those in the City ofDavid in Jerusalem, who had converted it into a citadel for their own use, from which they would sal y out todefile the surroundings of the sanctuary and to violate its sacred character;
37 Egli vi pose dei Giudei a difesa del paese e della città, e rialzò le mura di Gerusalemme,	37 to station Jewish soldiers there instead for the security of the country and the city; and to heightenthe wal s of Jerusalem;
38 Il re Demetrio lo confermò nel sommo sacerdozio,	38 'And since King Demetrius has heard that the Romans call the Jews their friends, al ies and brothers,
39 lo dichiarò suo amico, e lo glorificò con grandi onori,	39 and that they have given an honourable reception to Simon's ambassadors, and, furthermore,
40 avendo saputo che i Giudei erano stati dichiarati amici, alleati, fratelli dai Romani, i quali avevano accolto con onore gli ambasciatori di Simone.	40 that the Jews and priests are happy that Simon should, pending the advent of a genuine prophet, betheir ethnarch and high priest for life
41 I Giudei e i loro sacerdoti di comune consenso hanno stabilito che egli sia loro duce e sommo sacerdote in eterno, fino alla venuta del profeta fedele.	41 therefore he has confirmed him in the high-priestly office, has raised him to the rank of Friend andhas showered great honours on him, also confirming him as their commander-in-chief,
42 (Hanno stabilito) che egli sia loro capo, che abbia cura delle cose sante, stabilisca gli ufficiali sopra le loro opere, sopra il paese, sopra le armi, sopra le fortezze,	42 with the right to appoint officials to oversee the fabric of the sanctuary and to administer the country,munitions and fortresses;
43 e amministri le cose del santuario, e sia obbedito da tutti, e siano scritti in suo nome tutti gli atti dello stato, e indossi la porpora e l'oro.	43 he is to have personal charge of the sanctuary, and to be obeyed by al ; al official documents in thecountry must be drawn up in his name; and he may assume the purple and may wear golden ornaments;
44 Non sarà permesso a nessuno del popolo nè ai sacerdoti di non far conto di questi ordini, o di contraddire a quello che egli avrà stabilito, o di convocar le adunanze nel paese senza di lui, o vestir di porpora o usar la fibbia d'oro.	44 'Furthermore, it is against the law for any member of the public or of the priesthood to contraveneany of these enactments or to contest his decisions, or to convene a meeting anywhere in the country without hispermission, or to assume the purple or wear the golden brooch;
45 Chiunque agirà contro questi ordini, o ne violerà qualcuno, sarà reo.	45 and anyone acting contrary to, or rejecting any article of, these enactments is liable to punishment;
46 E piacque al popolo tutto di dare il potere a Simone, e di agire secondo questi decreti.	46 'And since the people have unanimously agreed to grant Simon the right to act as aforesaid, and
47 E Simone accettò, e gradì di esercitare le funzioni di sommo sacerdote, di essere duce e principe della nazione dei Giudei, e dei sacerdoti, e di avere il comando supremo».	47 since Simon, for his part, has given his assent, and has consented to assume the high-priestly officeand to be commander-in-chief and ethnarch of the Jews and their priests, and to preside over al :
48 E stabilirono di incidere questo decreto in tavole di bronzo, da porsi nel portico del tempio, in luogo distinto, di depositarne una copia nell'erario, da servire a Simone e ai suoi figli.	48 'So, be it now enacted: that this record be inscribed on bronze tablets and be erected at someconspicuous place within the precincts of the Temple,
	49 and that copies be deposited in the Treasury for Simon and his descendants.'
