LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Ma di queste cose non devi vergognarti, né compiacere alcuno così da peccare :	1 The fol owing things you should not be ashamed of, and do not sin from fear of what others think:
2 della legge dell'Altissimo e della sua alleanza, della giustizia se si assolve lo straniero,	2 of the Law of the Most High or of the covenant, of a verdict that acquits the godless,
3 di fare i conti con i colleghi e con i compagni di viaggio, di dare agli altri l'eredità che loro spetta,	3 of keeping accounts with a travelling companion, of settling property on your friends,
4 d'avere esatti i pesi e la bilancia, di fare acquisti, grandi o piccoli che siano,	4 of being accurate over scales and weights, of making small and large profits,
5 di vendere col profitto dei mercanti, d'avere molto rigore coi figli, di far sanguinare il fianco del servo svogliato.	5 of gaining from commercial transactions, of disciplining your children strictly, of lashing a wicked slavetill you draw blood.
6 Se la moglie è infida è utile il sigillo e dove vi sono molte mani, usa la chiave.	6 With an interfering wife, it is as wel to use your seal, and where there are many hands, lock things up.
7 Quando consegni, fallo col conto e la bilancia, metti tutto per scritto, l'uscita e l'entrata.	7 Whatever stores you issue, do it by number and weight, spendings and takings, put everything inwriting.
8 Non devi vergognarti di correggere l'insipiente e lo stolto, o il vecchio colpevole di fornicazione. Così ti dimostrerai veramente educato, ogni vivente ti apprezzerà.	8 Do not be ashamed to correct a stupid person or a fool, or an old dotard who bickers with youngpeople. Then you wil show yourself real y educated and win the approval of everyone.
9 Segreta preoccupazione è per il padre una figlia, il curarla porta via il sonno; quando è nubile, perché non passi il fiore dell'età, da sposata, perché non venga odiata;	9 Unknown to her, a daughter keeps her father awake, the worry she gives him drives away his sleep: inher youth, in case she never marries, married, in case she should be disliked,
10 quando è vergine, perché non sia violata e diventi incinta nella casa paterna, quando ha il marito, perché non sbagli, e dopo il matrimonio, per paura che sia sterile.	10 as a virgin, in case she should be defiled and found with child in her father's house, having a husband,in case she goes astray, married, in case she should be sterile!
11 Sulla figlia indocile esercita una custodia irremovibile, perché non ti renda ridicolo ai nemici e non si mormori nella città e nel popolo sul tuo conto, trovando la vergogna dinanzi alla folla.	11 Your daughter is headstrong? Keep a sharp look-out that she does not make you the laughing-stock ofyour enemies, the talk of the town, the object of common gossip, and put you to public shame.
12 Non mostri la sua bellezza a qualsiasi uomo e non s'intrattenga troppo tra le donne:	12 Do not stare at any man for his good looks, do not sit down with women;
13 perché, come dalle vesti esce il tarlo, così dalla donna la corruzione della donna;	13 for moth comes out of clothes, and woman's spite out of woman.
14 meglio la cattiveria di un uomo che la bontà di una donna; una donna svergognata è un obbrobrio.	14 Better a man's spite than a woman's kindness: women give rise to shame and reproach.
15 Ricorderò le opere del Signore, voglio narrare le cose che ho viste; con le parole del Signore son fatte le sue opere.	15 Next, I shal remind you of the works of the Lord, and tel of what I have seen. By the words of the Lordhis works come into being and all creation obeys his wil .
16 Il sole che splende, dall'alto vede tutto, della gloria del Signore è piena la sua opera.	16 The shining sun looks down on al things, and the work of the Lord is full of his glory.
17 Non è stato concesso ai santi del Signore di narrare tutte le sue meraviglie, quelle che il Signore onnipotente ha stabilito perché l'universo fosse saldo per la sua gloria.	17 The Lord has not granted the Holy Ones the power to tell of all his marvels which the Almighty Lordhas solidly constructed for the universe to stand firm in his glory.
18 Egli sonda l'abisso e il cuore dell'uomo, ne comprende i vari raggiri; l'Altissimo possiede tutta la scienza e fissa il suo occhio nei segni dei tempi,	18 He has fathomed both the abyss and the human heart and seen into their devious ways; for the MostHigh knows all there is to know and sees the signs of the times.
19 svela le cose passate e le future e rivela le tracce delle cose nascoste.	19 He declares what is past and what wil be, and reveals the trend of hidden things.
20 Non gli sfugge nessun pensiero, nessuna parola gli è nascosta.	20 Not a thought escapes him, not a single word is hidden from him.
21 Ha ordinato le meraviglie della sua sapienza, egli solo esiste prima del tempo e per l'eternità, nulla lo fa crescere e nulla lo sminuisce, non ha bisogno del consiglio di nessuno.	21 He has embellished the magnificent works of his wisdom, he is from everlasting to everlasting, nothingcan be added to him, nothing taken away, he needs no one's advice.
22 Son tutte piacevoli le sue opere pur se vediamo una loro scintilla.	22 How lovely, all his works, how dazzling to the eye!
23 Tutte queste cose hanno vita e durano per sempre, tutte sono necessarie e tutte obbediscono.	23 They all live and last for ever, and, whatever the circumstances, al obey.
24 Tutte le cose sono doppie, l'una di fronte all'altra, egli nulla fece incompleto,	24 Al things go in pairs, by opposites, he has not made anything imperfect:
25 l'una completa la bontà dell'altra: chi finirà di contemplare la sua gloria?	25 one thing complements the excel ence of another. Who could ever grow tired of gazing at his glory?
