Job 12

1 Then Job replied and said:	1 Jó tomou a palavra nestes termos:
2 No doubt you are the intelligent folk, and with you wisdom shall die!	2 Sois mesmo gente muito hábil, e convosco morrerá a sabedoria.
3 But I have intelligence as well as you; for who does not know such things as these?	3 Tenho também o espírito como o vosso {não vos sou inferior}: quem, pois, ignoraria o que sabeis?
4 I have become the sport of my neighbors: "The one whom God answers when he calls upon him, The just, the perfect man," is a laughing-stock;	4 Os amigos escarnecem daquele que invoca Deus para que ele lhe responda, e zombam do justo e do inocente.
5 The undisturbed esteem my downfall a disgrace such as awaits unsteady feet;	5 Vergonha para a infelicidade! É o modo de pensar do infeliz; só há desprezo para aquele cujo pé fraqueja.
6 Yet the tents of robbers are prosperous, and those who provoke God are secure.	6 As tendas dos bandidos gozam de paz; segurança para aqueles que provocam Deus, que não têm outro Deus senão o próprio braço.
7 But now ask the beasts to teach you, and the birds of the air to tell you;	7 Pergunta, pois, aos animais e eles te ensinarão; às aves do céu e elas te instruirão.
8 Or the reptiles on earth to instruct you, and the fish of the sea to inform you.	8 Fala {aos répteis} da terra, e eles te responderão, e aos peixes do mar, e eles te darão lições.
9 Which of all these does not know that the hand of God has done this?	9 Entre todos esses seres quem não sabe que a mão de Deus fez tudo isso,
10 In his hand is the soul of every living thing, and the life breath of all mankind.	10 ele que tem em mãos a alma de tudo o que vive, e o sopro de vida de todos os humanos?
11 Does not the ear judge words as the mouth tastes food?	11 Não discerne o ouvido as palavras como o paladar discerne o sabor das iguarias?
12 So with old age is wisdom, and with length of days understanding.	12 A sabedoria pertence aos cabelos brancos, a longa vida confere a inteligência.
13 With him are wisdom and might; his are counsel and understanding.	13 Em {Deus} residem sabedoria e poder; ele possui o conselho e a inteligência.
14 If he breaks a thing down, there is no rebuilding; if he imprisons a man, there is no release.	14 O que ele destrói não será reconstruído; se aprisionar um homem, ninguém há que o solte.
15 He holds back the waters and there is drought; he sends them forth and they overwhelm the land.	15 Quando faz as águas pararem, há seca; se as soltar, submergirão a terra.
16 With him are strength and prudence; the misled and the misleaders are his.	16 Nele há força e prudência; ele conhece o que engana e o enganado;
17 He sends counselors away barefoot, and of judges he makes fools.	17 faz os árbitros andarem descalços, torna os juízes estúpidos;
18 He loosens the bonds imposed by kings and leaves but a waistcloth to bind the king's own loins.	18 desata a cinta dos reis e cinge-lhes os rins com uma corda;
19 and lets their never-failing waters flow away.	19 faz os sacerdotes andarem descalços, e abate os poderosos;
20 He silences the trusted adviser, and takes discretion from the aged.	20 tira a palavra aos mais seguros de si mesmos e retira a sabedoria dos velhos;
21 He breaks down the barriers of the streams	21 derrama o desprezo sobre os nobres, afrouxa a cinta dos fortes,
22 The recesses of the darkness he discloses, and brings the gloom forth to the light.	22 põe a claro os segredos das trevas, e traz à luz a sombra da morte.
23 He makes nations great and he destroys them; he spreads peoples abroad and he abandons them.	23 Torna grandes as nações, e as destrói; multiplica os povos, depois os suprime.
24 He takes understanding from the leaders of the land,	24 Tira a razão dos chefes da terra e os deixa perdidos num deserto sem pista;
25 till they grope in the darkness without light; he makes them stagger like drunken men.	25 andam às apalpadelas nas trevas, sem luz; tropeçam como um embriagado.
