LXXNEW JERUSALEM
μετα δε το παυσασθαι ελιουν της λεξεως ειπεν ο κυριος τω ιωβ δια λαιλαπος και νεφων1 Then from the heart of the tempest Yahweh gave Job his answer. He said:
τις ουτος ο κρυπτων με βουλην συνεχων δε ρηματα εν καρδια εμε δε οιεται κρυπτειν2 Who is this, obscuring my intentions with his ignorant words?
ζωσαι ωσπερ ανηρ την οσφυν σου ερωτησω δε σε συ δε μοι αποκριθητι3 Brace yourself like a fighter; I am going to ask the questions, and you are to inform me!
που ης εν τω θεμελιουν με την γην απαγγειλον δε μοι ει επιστη συνεσιν4 Where were you when I laid the earth's foundations? Tel me, since you are so wel -informed!
τις εθετο τα μετρα αυτης ει οιδας η τις ο επαγαγων σπαρτιον επ' αυτης5 Who decided its dimensions, do you know? Or who stretched the measuring line across it?
επι τινος οι κρικοι αυτης πεπηγασιν τις δε εστιν ο βαλων λιθον γωνιαιον επ' αυτης6 What supports its pil ars at their bases? Who laid its cornerstone
οτε εγενηθησαν αστρα ηνεσαν με φωνη μεγαλη παντες αγγελοι μου7 to the joyful concert of the morning stars and unanimous acclaim of the sons of God?
εφραξα δε θαλασσαν πυλαις οτε εμαιμασσεν εκ κοιλιας μητρος αυτης εκπορευομενη8 Who pent up the sea behind closed doors when it leapt tumultuous from the womb,
εθεμην δε αυτη νεφος αμφιασιν ομιχλη δε αυτην εσπαργανωσα9 when I wrapped it in a robe of mist and made black clouds its swaddling bands;
εθεμην δε αυτη ορια περιθεις κλειθρα και πυλας10 when I cut out the place I had decreed for it and imposed gates and a bolt?
ειπα δε αυτη μεχρι τουτου ελευση και ουχ υπερβηση αλλ' εν σεαυτη συντριβησεται σου τα κυματα11 'Come so far,' I said, 'and no further; here your proud waves must break!'
η επι σου συντεταχα φεγγος πρωινον εωσφορος δε ειδεν την εαυτου ταξιν12 Have you ever in your life given orders to the morning or sent the dawn to its post,
επιλαβεσθαι πτερυγων γης εκτιναξαι ασεβεις εξ αυτης13 to grasp the earth by its edges and shake the wicked out of it?
η συ λαβων γην πηλον επλασας ζωον και λαλητον αυτον εθου επι γης14 She turns it as red as a clay seal, she tints it as though it were a dress,
αφειλας δε απο ασεβων το φως βραχιονα δε υπερηφανων συνετριψας15 stealing the light from evil-doers and breaking the arm raised to strike.
ηλθες δε επι πηγην θαλασσης εν δε ιχνεσιν αβυσσου περιεπατησας16 Have you been right down to the sources of the sea and walked about at the bottom of the Abyss?
ανοιγονται δε σοι φοβω πυλαι θανατου πυλωροι δε αδου ιδοντες σε επτηξαν17 Have you been shown the gates of Death, have you seen the janitors of the Shadow dark as death?
νενουθετησαι δε το ευρος της υπ' ουρανον αναγγειλον δη μοι ποση τις εστιν18 Have you an inkling of the extent of the earth? Tell me al about it if you have!
ποια δε γη αυλιζεται το φως σκοτους δε ποιος ο τοπος19 Which is the way to the home of the Light, and where does darkness live? -
ει αγαγοις με εις ορια αυτων ει δε και επιστασαι τριβους αυτων20 You could then show them the way to their proper places, you could put them on the path homeagain!
οιδα αρα οτι τοτε γεγεννησαι αριθμος δε ετων σου πολυς21 If you do know, you must have been born when they were, you must be very old by now!
ηλθες δε επι θησαυρους χιονος θησαυρους δε χαλαζης εορακας22 Have you visited the place where the snow is stored? Have you seen the stores of hail,
αποκειται δε σοι εις ωραν εχθρων εις ημεραν πολεμου και μαχης23 which I keep for times of distress, for days of battle and war?
ποθεν δε εκπορευεται παχνη η διασκεδαννυται νοτος εις την υπ' ουρανον24 From which direction does the lightning fork, where in the world does the east wind blow itself out?
τις δε ητοιμασεν υετω λαβρω ρυσιν οδον δε κυδοιμων25 Who bores a channel for the downpour or clears the way for the rol ing thunder
του υετισαι επι γην ου ουκ ανηρ ερημον ου ουχ υπαρχει ανθρωπος εν αυτη26 so that rain may fal on lands where no one lives, and the deserts void of human dwel ing,
του χορτασαι αβατον και αοικητον και του εκβλαστησαι εξοδον χλοης27 to meet the needs of the lonely wastes and make grass sprout on the thirsty ground?
τις εστιν υετου πατηρ τις δε εστιν ο τετοκως βωλους δροσου28 Has the rain a father? Who begets the dewdrops?
εκ γαστρος δε τινος εκπορευεται ο κρυσταλλος παχνην δε εν ουρανω τις τετοκεν29 What womb brings forth the ice, who gives birth to the frost of heaven,
η καταβαινει ωσπερ υδωρ ρεον προσωπον δε αβυσσου τις επηξεν30 when the waters grow hard as stone and the surface of the deep congeals?
συνηκας δε δεσμον πλειαδος και φραγμον ωριωνος ηνοιξας31 Can you fasten the harness of the Pleiades, or untie Orion's bands?
η διανοιξεις μαζουρωθ εν καιρω αυτου και εσπερον επι κομης αυτου αξεις αυτα32 Can you guide the Crown season by season and show the Bear and its cubs which way to go?
επιστασαι δε τροπας ουρανου η τα υπ' ουρανον ομοθυμαδον γινομενα33 Have you grasped the celestial laws? Could you make their writ run on the earth?
καλεσεις δε νεφος φωνη και τρομω υδατος λαβρω υπακουσεται σου34 Can your voice carry as far as the clouds and make the pent-up waters do your bidding?
αποστελεις δε κεραυνους και πορευσονται ερουσιν δε σοι τι εστιν35 Will lightning flashes come at your command and answer, 'Here we are'?
τις δε εδωκεν γυναιξιν υφασματος σοφιαν η ποικιλτικην επιστημην36 Who endowed the ibis with wisdom and gave the cock his intel igence?
τις δε ο αριθμων νεφη σοφια ουρανον δε εις γην εκλινεν37 Whose skil details every cloud and tilts the water-skins of heaven
κεχυται δε ωσπερ γη κονια κεκολληκα δε αυτον ωσπερ λιθω κυβον38 until the dust solidifies and the cracks in the ground close up?
θηρευσεις δε λεουσιν βοραν ψυχας δε δρακοντων εμπλησεις39 Do you go hunting prey for the lioness; do you satisfy the hunger of young lions
δεδοικασιν γαρ εν κοιταις αυτων καθηνται δε εν υλαις ενεδρευοντες40 where they crouch in their den, waiting eagerly in the bushes?
τις δε ητοιμασεν κορακι βοραν νεοσσοι γαρ αυτου προς κυριον κεκραγασιν πλανωμενοι τα σιτα ζητουντες41 Who makes provision for the raven when his little ones cry out to God craning their necks in search offood?
