1 Then Eliphaz the Themanite answered, and said:	1 És felelt a temáni Elifáz, és így szólt:
2 Can man be compared with God, even though he were of perfect knowledge?	2 »Lehet-e az embert Istenhez hasonlítani, még ha tökéletes is tudása?
3 What doth it profit God if thou be just? or what dost thou give him if thy way be unspotted?	3 Mi haszna van Istennek, ha igaz vagy, mit nyer azzal, ha utad tökéletes?
4 Shall he reprove thee for fear, and come with thee into judgment:	4 Talán istenfélelmed miatt fenyít meg téged és száll veled perbe,
5 And not for thy manifold wickedness, and thy infinite iniquities?	5 és nem inkább nagy gonoszságod miatt, véghetetlen bűneid miatt?
6 For thou hast taken away the pledge of thy brethren without cause, and stripped the naked of their clothing.	6 Mert ok nélkül vettél zálogot testvéreidtől, elvetted a ruhát a mezítelenektől,
7 Thou hast not given water to the weary, thou hast withdrawn bread from the hungry.	7 nem adtál vizet a fáradtnak s az éhestől megtagadtad a kenyeret,
8 In the strength of thy arm thou didst possess the land, and being the most mighty thou holdest it.	8 karod erejével vetted a földet birtokodba, a legerősebb címén birtokoltad,
9 Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless thou hast broken in pieces.	9 az özvegyeket üres kézzel menesztetted, az árvák karjait összezúztad.
10 Therefore art thou surrounded with snares, and sudden fear troubleth thee.	10 Tőrökkel vagy ezért körülvéve, és félelem háborít meg hirtelen.
11 And didst thou think that thou shouldst not see darkness, and that thou shouldst not be covered with the violence of overflowing waters?	11 Azt hitted, hogy nem látsz sötétséget, s az árvíz rohama el nem borít?
12 Dost not thou think that God is higher than heaven, and is elevated above the height of the stars?	12 ‘Nem gondolod meg, hogy Isten magasabb az égnél s a csillagok teteje fölé emelkedik?’
13 And thou sayst: What doth God know? and he judgeth as it were through a mist.	13 És mondod: ‘Mit tud az Isten? A felhők homálya mögül tehet-e igazságot?
14 The clouds are his covert, and he doth not consider our things, and he walketh about the poles of heaven.	14 Felhők leplezik, és nem látja dolgainkat, ő az ég szélén jár-kel!’
15 Dost thou desire to keep the path of ages, which wicked men have trodden?	15 Vajon az ősvilág ösvényét követed, amelyet gonosz férfiak tapostak,
16 Who were taken away before their time, and a flood hath overthrown their foundation.	16 akiket idő előtt ragadtak el, és áradás mosta el talajukat?
17 Who said to God: Depart from us: and looked upon the Almighty as if he could do nothing:	17 Azt mondták Istennek: ‘Hagyj minket békében!’ S úgy gondolták, hogy a Mindenható tehetetlen,
18 Whereas he had filled their houses with good things: whose way of thinking be far from me.	18 pedig ő betöltötte házaikat javakkal. Gondolatuk távol legyen tőlem!
19 The just shall see, and shall rejoice, and the innocent shall laugh them to scorn.	19 Látják ezt az igazak és örvendeznek, s az ártatlan kigúnyolja őket.
20 Is not their exaltation cut down, and hath not fire devoured the remnants of them?	20 ‘Nemde semmivé lett dölyfük, és maradékukat tűz emésztette.’
21 Submit thyself then to him, and be at peace: and thereby thou shalt have the best fruits.	21 Légy tehát Vele jóban és békességben, ennek majd igen jó gyümölcsét látod.
22 Receive the law of his mouth, and lay up his words in thy heart.	22 Fogadd el szájából a tanítást és tedd el szavait szívedbe!
23 If thou wilt return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, and shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacle.	23 Ha visszatérsz a Mindenhatóhoz, ha megalázod magadat, s eltávolítod a bűnt a sátradból,
24 He shall give for earth flint, and for flint torrents of gold.	24 ha olyannak veszed az aranyat, mint a port, s az ófírt, mint a patak kavicsait,
25 And the Almighty shall be against thy enemies, and silver shall be heaped together for thee.	25 akkor a Mindenható lesz aranykincsed, és ő lesz ezüstöd bőségben.
26 Then shalt thou abound in delights in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face to God.	26 Mert akkor a Mindenhatóban találsz gyönyörűséget, és Istenhez emelheted arcodat.
27 Thou shalt pray to him, and he will hear thee, and thou shalt pay vows.	27 Ha könyörögsz hozzá, meghallgat, és megadhatod, amit fogadtál.
28 Thou shalt decree a thing, and it I shall come to thee, and light shall shine in thy ways.	28 Amit felteszel magadban, sikerül, és útjaidon fény ragyog,
29 For he that hath been humbled, shall be in glory: and he that shall bow down his eyes, he shall be saved.	29 mert aki megalázza magát, dicsőségben lesz, s aki lesüti szemét, üdvösséget lel,
30 The innocent shall be saved, and he shall be saved by the cleanness of his hands.	30 az ártatlan megszabadul, megmenekül keze tisztasága miatt.«
