Job 22

1 Then Eliphaz the Themanite answered, and said:	1 Eliphaz de Témân prit la parole et dit:
2 Can man be compared with God, even though he were of perfect knowledge?	2 Un homme peut-il être utile à Dieu, quand un être sensé n'est utile qu'à soi?
3 What doth it profit God if thou be just? or what dost thou give him if thy way be unspotted?	3 Shaddaï est-il intéressé par ta justice, tire-t-il profit de ta conduite intègre?
4 Shall he reprove thee for fear, and come with thee into judgment:	4 Serait-ce à cause de ta piété qu'il te corrige et qu'il entre en jugement avec toi?
5 And not for thy manifold wickedness, and thy infinite iniquities?	5 N'est-ce pas plutôt pour ta grande méchanceté, pour tes fautes illimitées?
6 For thou hast taken away the pledge of thy brethren without cause, and stripped the naked of their clothing.	6 Tu as exigé de tes frères des gages injustifiés, dépouillé de leurs vêtements ceux qui sont nus;
7 Thou hast not given water to the weary, thou hast withdrawn bread from the hungry.	7 omis de désaltérer l'homme assoiffé et refusé le pain à l'affamé;
8 In the strength of thy arm thou didst possess the land, and being the most mighty thou holdest it.	8 livré la terre à un homme de main, pour que s'y installe le favori;
9 Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless thou hast broken in pieces.	9 renvoyé les veuves les mains vides et broyé le bras des orphelins.
10 Therefore art thou surrounded with snares, and sudden fear troubleth thee.	10 Voilà pourquoi des filets t'enveloppent et des frayeurs soudaines t'épouvantent.
11 And didst thou think that thou shouldst not see darkness, and that thou shouldst not be covered with the violence of overflowing waters?	11 La lumière s'est assombrie, tu n'y vois plus et la masse des eaux te submerge.
12 Dost not thou think that God is higher than heaven, and is elevated above the height of the stars?	12 Dieu n'est-il pas au plus haut des cieux, ne voit-il pas la tête des étoiles?
13 And thou sayst: What doth God know? and he judgeth as it were through a mist.	13 Et parce qu'il est là-haut tu as dit: "Que connaît Dieu? Peut-il juger à travers la nuée sombre?
14 The clouds are his covert, and he doth not consider our things, and he walketh about the poles of heaven.	14 Les nuages sont pour lui un voile opaque et il circule au pourtour des cieux."
15 Dost thou desire to keep the path of ages, which wicked men have trodden?	15 Veux-tu donc suivre la route antique que foulèrent les hommes pervers?
16 Who were taken away before their time, and a flood hath overthrown their foundation.	16 Ils furent enlevés avant le temps et un fleuve noya leurs fondations.
17 Who said to God: Depart from us: and looked upon the Almighty as if he could do nothing:	17 Car ils disaient à Dieu: "Eloigne-toi de nous! Que peut nous faire Shaddaï?"
18 Whereas he had filled their houses with good things: whose way of thinking be far from me.	18 Et lui comblait de biens leurs maisons, tout en étant tenu à l'écart du conseil des méchants!
19 The just shall see, and shall rejoice, and the innocent shall laugh them to scorn.	19 A ce spectacle, les justes se sont réjouis et l'homme intègre s'est moqué d'eux:
20 Is not their exaltation cut down, and hath not fire devoured the remnants of them?	20 "Comme ils ont été supprimés, nos adversaires! et quel feu a dévoré leur abondance!"
21 Submit thyself then to him, and be at peace: and thereby thou shalt have the best fruits.	21 Allons! Réconcilie-toi avec lui et fais la paix: ainsi ton bonheur te sera rendu.
22 Receive the law of his mouth, and lay up his words in thy heart.	22 Recueille de sa bouche la doctrine et place ses paroles dans ton coeur.
23 If thou wilt return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, and shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacle.	23 Si tu reviens à Shaddaï en humilié, si tu éloignes de ta tente l'injustice,
24 He shall give for earth flint, and for flint torrents of gold.	24 si tu déposes ton or sur la poussière, l'Ophir parmi les cailloux du torrent,
25 And the Almighty shall be against thy enemies, and silver shall be heaped together for thee.	25 Shaddaï sera pour toi des lingots d'or et de l'argent en monceaux.
26 Then shalt thou abound in delights in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face to God.	26 Alors tu feras de Shaddaï tes délices et tu lèveras vers Dieu ta face.
27 Thou shalt pray to him, and he will hear thee, and thou shalt pay vows.	27 Tes prières, il les exaucera et tu pourras acquitter tes voeux.
28 Thou shalt decree a thing, and it I shall come to thee, and light shall shine in thy ways.	28 Toutes tes entreprises réussiront et sur ta route brillera la lumière.
29 For he that hath been humbled, shall be in glory: and he that shall bow down his eyes, he shall be saved.	29 Car il abaisse l'orgueil des superbes, mais il sauve l'homme aux yeux baissés.
30 The innocent shall be saved, and he shall be saved by the cleanness of his hands.	30 Il délivre l'homme innocent; aie les mains pures, et tu seras sauvé.
