Job 22

1 Then Eliphaz the Themanite answered, and said:	1 Elifaz di Teman prese a dire:
2 Can man be compared with God, even though he were of perfect knowledge?	2 «Può forse l’uomo giovare a Dio, dato che il saggio può giovare solo a se stesso?
3 What doth it profit God if thou be just? or what dost thou give him if thy way be unspotted?	3 Quale interesse ne viene all’Onnipotente che tu sia giusto, o che vantaggio ha, se tieni una condotta integra?
4 Shall he reprove thee for fear, and come with thee into judgment:	4 È forse per la tua pietà che ti punisce e ti convoca in giudizio?
5 And not for thy manifold wickedness, and thy infinite iniquities?	5 O non piuttosto per la tua grande malvagità e per le tue iniquità senza limite?
6 For thou hast taken away the pledge of thy brethren without cause, and stripped the naked of their clothing.	6 Senza motivo infatti hai angariato i tuoi fratelli e delle vesti hai spogliato gli ignudi.
7 Thou hast not given water to the weary, thou hast withdrawn bread from the hungry.	7 Non hai dato da bere all’assetato e all’affamato hai rifiutato il pane.
8 In the strength of thy arm thou didst possess the land, and being the most mighty thou holdest it.	8 Ai prepotenti davi la terra e vi abitavano solo i tuoi favoriti.
9 Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless thou hast broken in pieces.	9 Le vedove rimandavi a mani vuote e spezzavi le braccia degli orfani.
10 Therefore art thou surrounded with snares, and sudden fear troubleth thee.	10 Ecco perché intorno a te ci sono lacci e un improvviso spavento ti sorprende,
11 And didst thou think that thou shouldst not see darkness, and that thou shouldst not be covered with the violence of overflowing waters?	11 oppure l’oscurità ti impedisce di vedere e la piena delle acque ti sommerge.
12 Dost not thou think that God is higher than heaven, and is elevated above the height of the stars?	12 Ma Dio non è nell’alto dei cieli? Guarda quanto è lontano il vertice delle stelle!
13 And thou sayst: What doth God know? and he judgeth as it were through a mist.	13 E tu dici: “Che cosa ne sa Dio? Come può giudicare attraverso l’oscurità delle nubi?
14 The clouds are his covert, and he doth not consider our things, and he walketh about the poles of heaven.	14 Le nubi gli fanno velo e non vede quando passeggia sulla volta dei cieli”.
15 Dost thou desire to keep the path of ages, which wicked men have trodden?	15 Vuoi tu seguire il sentiero di un tempo, già battuto da persone perverse,
16 Who were taken away before their time, and a flood hath overthrown their foundation.	16 che prematuramente furono portate via, quando un fiume si era riversato sulle loro fondamenta?
17 Who said to God: Depart from us: and looked upon the Almighty as if he could do nothing:	17 Dicevano a Dio: “Allontànati da noi! Che cosa può fare a noi l’Onnipotente?”.
18 Whereas he had filled their houses with good things: whose way of thinking be far from me.	18 Eppure è lui che ha riempito le loro case di beni, mentre il consiglio dei malvagi è lontano da lui!
19 The just shall see, and shall rejoice, and the innocent shall laugh them to scorn.	19 I giusti vedranno e ne gioiranno e l’innocente riderà di loro:
20 Is not their exaltation cut down, and hath not fire devoured the remnants of them?	20 “Finalmente sono annientati i loro averi e il fuoco ha divorato la loro opulenza!”.
21 Submit thyself then to him, and be at peace: and thereby thou shalt have the best fruits.	21 Su, riconcìliati con lui e tornerai felice, e avrai nuovamente il tuo benessere.
22 Receive the law of his mouth, and lay up his words in thy heart.	22 Accogli la legge dalla sua bocca e poni le sue parole nel tuo cuore.
23 If thou wilt return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, and shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacle.	23 Se ti rivolgerai all’Onnipotente, verrai ristabilito. Se allontanerai l’iniquità dalla tua tenda,
24 He shall give for earth flint, and for flint torrents of gold.	24 se stimerai come polvere l’oro e come ciottoli dei fiumi l’oro di Ofir,
25 And the Almighty shall be against thy enemies, and silver shall be heaped together for thee.	25 allora l’Onnipotente sarà il tuo oro, sarà per te come mucchi d’argento.
26 Then shalt thou abound in delights in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face to God.	26 Allora sì, nell’Onnipotente ti delizierai e a Dio alzerai il tuo volto.
27 Thou shalt pray to him, and he will hear thee, and thou shalt pay vows.	27 Lo supplicherai ed egli ti esaudirà, e tu scioglierai i tuoi voti.
28 Thou shalt decree a thing, and it I shall come to thee, and light shall shine in thy ways.	28 Quando deciderai una cosa, ti riuscirà e sul tuo cammino brillerà la luce,
29 For he that hath been humbled, shall be in glory: and he that shall bow down his eyes, he shall be saved.	29 perché egli umilia l’alterigia del superbo, ma soccorre chi ha lo sguardo dimesso.
30 The innocent shall be saved, and he shall be saved by the cleanness of his hands.	30 Egli libera chi è innocente, e tu sarai liberato per la purezza delle tue mani».
