1 LA Sapienza non grida ella? E la Prudenza non dà ella fuori la sua voce?	1 Does not wisdom call out, and prudence bestow her voice?
2 Ella sta in piè in capo de’ luoghi elevati, in su la via, Ne’ crocicchi.	2 At the summits and the tops of exalted places, standing above the ways, in the midst of the paths,
3 Ella grida presso alle porte, alla bocca della città, All’entrata degli usci delle case,	3 beside the gates of the city, at the very doors, she speaks, saying:
4 Dicendo: Io grido a voi, o uomini principali; E la mia voce s’indirizza ancora al volgo.	4 “O men, to you I call out, and my voice is to the sons of men.
5 Semplici, intendete che cosa sia avvedimento; E voi stolti, intendete che cosa sia buon senno.	5 O little ones, understand discernment. And you who are unwise, turn your souls.
6 Ascoltate; perciocchè io proporrò cose eccellenti; L’aprir delle mie labbra sarà di cose diritte.	6 Listen, for I will speak about great things, and my lips will be opened, so as to foretell what is right.
7 Conciossiachè il mio palato ragionerà di verità; Ma l’empietà è ciò che le mie labbra abbominano.	7 My throat shall practice truth, and my lips shall detest the impious.
8 Tutti i detti della mia bocca son con giustizia; In essi non vi è nulla di torto o di perverso.	8 All my words are just. There is no depravity in them, and no perversity.
9 Essi tutti son diritti agl’intendenti, E bene addirizzati a coloro che hanno trovata la scienza.	9 They are upright to those who understand, and equitable to those who discover knowledge.
10 Ricevete il mio ammaestramento, e non dell’argento; E scienza, anzi che oro eletto.	10 Accept my discipline, and not money. Choose the doctrine that is greater than gold.
11 Perciocchè la sapienza è migliore che le perle; E tutte le cose le più care non l’agguagliano	11 For wisdom is better than all that is most precious, and everything that is desirable cannot compare to her.
12 Io, la Sapienza, abito nell’avvedimento, E trovo la conoscenza de’ buoni avvisi.	12 I, wisdom, dwell in counsel, and I am inside learned thoughts.
13 Il timor del Signore è odiare il male; Io odio la superbia, e l’alterezza, e la via della malvagità, E la bocca perversa.	13 The fear of the Lord hates evil. I detest arrogance, and pride, and every wicked way, and a mouth with a double tongue.
14 A me appartiene il consiglio e la buona ragione; Io son la prudenza; a me appartiene la forza.	14 Counsel is mine, and equity. Prudence is mine. Strength is mine.
15 Per me regnano i re, Ed i rettori fanno statuti di giustizia.	15 Through me, kings reign and legislators decree just conditions.
16 Per me signoreggiano i signori, Ed i principi, e tutti i giudici della terra.	16 Through me, princes rule and the powerful decree justice.
17 Io amo quelli che mi amano; E quelli che mi cercano mi troveranno.	17 I love those who love me. And those who stand watch for me until morning shall discover me.
18 Ricchezze e gloria son meco; Beni permanenti e giustizia.	18 With me, are wealth and glory, superb riches and justice.
19 Il mio frutto è migliore che oro, anzi che oro finissimo; E la mia rendita migliore che argento eletto.	19 For my fruit is better than gold and precious stones, and my progeny better than choice silver.
20 Io cammino per la via della giustizia, In mezzo de’ sentieri della dirittura;	20 I walk in the way of justice, in the midst of the paths of judgment,
21 Per fare eredare il vero essere a quelli che mi amano, Ed empiere i lor tesori	21 so that I may enrich those who love me, and thus complete their treasures.
22 IL Signore mi possedeva al principio della sua via, Avanti le sue opere, ab eterno.	22 The Lord possessed me in the beginning of his ways, before he made anything, from the beginning.
23 Io sono stata costituita in principato ab eterno, Dal principio, avanti che la terra fosse.	23 I was ordained from eternity, and out of antiquity, before the earth was formed.
24 Avanti che fossero abissi, Nè fonti, nè gorghi d’acque, io fui prodotta.	24 The abyss did not yet exist, and I was already conceived; neither had the fountains of waters yet erupted.
25 Io fui prodotta innanzi che i monti fossero profondati, Avanti i colli;	25 The mountains, with their great mass, had not yet been established. Before the hills, I was brought forth.
26 Mentre egli non avea ancora fatta la terra, nè le campagne, Nè la sommità del terreno del mondo.	26 Still he had not made the earth, and the rivers, and the poles of the globe of the earth.
27 Quando egli ordinava i cieli, io v’era; Quando egli disegnava il giro sopra la superficie dell’abisso;	27 I was already present: when he prepared the heavens; when, with a certain law and a circuit, he fortified the abyss;
28 Quando egli fermava il cielo disopra; Quando egli fortificava le fonti dell’abisso;	28 when he made firm the sky above, and set free the fountains of waters;
29 Quando egli poneva il suo termine al mare, Talchè le acque non possono trapassare il suo comandamento; Quando egli poneva i fondamenti della terra;	29 when he encompassed the sea within its limits, and laid down a law for the waters, lest they transgress their limits; when he weighed the foundations of the earth.
30 Ed era appo lui come un allievo, Ed era le sue delizie tuttodì; Io mi sollazzava in ogni tempo nel suo cospetto.	30 I was with him in composing all things. And I was delighted, throughout every day, by playing in his sight at all times,
31 Io mi sollazzo nella parte abitata della sua terra; Ed i miei diletti sono co’ figliuoli degli uomini	31 playing in globe of the earth. And my delight was to be with the sons of men.
32 Ora dunque, figliuoli, ascoltatemi: Beati coloro che osservano le mie vie.	32 Therefore, sons, hear me now. Blessed are those who preserve my ways.
33 Ascoltate l’ammaestramento, e diventate savi, E non lo schifate.	33 Listen to discipline, and become wise, and do not be willing to cast it aside.
34 Beato l’uomo che mi ascolta, Per vegliar tuttodì presso a’ miei usci; Per istare a guardia agli stipiti delle mie porte.	34 Blessed is the man who listens to me, and who stands watch at my gates everyday, and who observes at the posts of my doors.
35 Perciocchè chi mi trova, trova la vita, Ed ottiene benevolenza dal Signore.	35 He who finds me, finds life, and he will draw salvation from the Lord.
36 Ma chi pecca contro a me fa ingiuria all’anima sua; Tutti quelli che mi odiano amano la morte	36 But he who sins against me will wound his own soul. All who hate me love death.”
