1 Tous tes amis diront: “Moi aussi, je t’aime bien”, mais l’ami peut ne l’être que de nom.	1 Every friend declares his friendship, but there are friends who are friends in name only.
2 N’est-ce pas tristesse mortelle quand un compagnon ou un ami se change en ennemi?	2 Is it not a sorrow unto death when your bosom companion becomes your enemy?
3 Ô mauvais désirs, d’où êtes-vous sortis pour couvrir la terre de tromperies?	3 "Alas, my companion! Why were you created to blanket the earth with deceit?"
4 Voyez ce compagnon qui profite de la bonne fortune de son ami: que vienne le malheur, il se tourne contre lui.	4 A false friend will share your joys, but in time of trouble he stands afar off.
5 Voyez ce compagnon qui souffre pour son ami tant qu’il y a profit pour son ventre: que vienne le danger, il ne pense qu’à se mettre à l’abri.	5 A true friend will fight with you against the foe, against your enemies he will be your shield-bearer.
6 Que ton cœur n’oublie pas ton ami, ne le laisse pas tomber si tu deviens riche.	6 Forget not your comrade during the battle, and neglect him not when you distribute your spoils.
7 Tout conseiller fait valoir son avis, mais plus d’un conseille dans son propre intérêt.	7 Every counselor points out a way, but some counsel ways of their own;
8 Fais attention à qui te conseille: demande-toi d’abord de quoi il a besoin, car il parlera selon son intérêt. Peut-être cherche-t-il à te rouler.	8 Be on the alert when one proffers advice, find out first of all what he wants. For he may be thinking of himself alone; why should the profit fall to him?
9 “Ta décision est bonne” dira-t-il, puis il suivra l’affaire pour voir ce qui t’arrive.	9 He may tell you how good your way will be, and then stand by to watch your misfortune.
10 Ne consulte pas celui qui n’a pas confiance en toi, cache tes intentions à ceux qui sont jaloux de toi.	10 Seek no advice from one who regards you with hostility; from those who envy you, keep your intentions hidden.
11 Ne consulte jamais une femme sur sa rivale, un lâche à propos de la guerre, un négociant pour un taux d’échange, un acheteur si tu vends, un jaloux s’il s’agit de reconnaissance, un égoïste s’il s’agit de bienfaisance, un paresseux pour quelque chose à faire, un ouvrier à la journée pour la fin du travail, un domestique fainéant pour une grosse besogne.	11 Speak not to a woman about her rival, nor to a coward about war, to a merchant about business, to a buyer about value, to a miser about generosity, to a cruel man about mercy, to a lazy man about work, to a seasonal laborer about the harvest, to an idle slave about a great task: pay no attention to any advice they give.
12 Mais cherche la compagnie d’un vrai croyant que tu sais respectueux des commandements, dont l’âme est proche de la tienne, et qui partagera ta souffrance si tu échoues.	12 Instead, associate with a religious man, who you are sure keeps the commandments; Who is like-minded with yourself and will feel for you if you fall.
13 Puis tiens-toi fermement à la décision qui naîtra de toi, car personne ne mérite davantage ta confiance.	13 Then, too, heed your own heart's counsel; for what have you that you can depend on more?
14 Notre propre intuition voit parfois plus clair que les sept sentinelles qui veillent sur la hauteur.	14 A man's conscience can tell him his situation better than seven watchmen in a lofty tower.
15 Mais par-dessus tout prie le Très-Haut pour qu’il te mette dans le vrai..	15 Most important of all, pray to God to set your feet in the path of truth.
16 Avant d’entreprendre, il faut penser; avant toute action il y a un projet.	16 A word is the source of every deed; a thought, of every act.
17 La décision peut s’orienter suivant quatre chemins:	17 The root of all conduct is the mind; four branches it shoots forth:

21 Il n’a pas reçu la grâce qui vient du Seigneur: il est dépourvu de sagesse.	21 When a man is wise to his own advantage, the fruits of his knowledge are seen in his own person;
22 Mais d’autres ont en eux la sagesse; on peut leur faire confiance quand ils déversent les fruits de leur intelligence.	22 When a man is wise to his people's advantage, the fruits of his knowledge are enduring:
23 L’homme sage instruit son propre peuple: on peut se fier aux fruits de son intelligence.	23 Limited are the days of one man's life, but the life of Israel is days without number.
24 L’homme sage est comblé de bénédictions, tous ceux qui le voient disent ses louanges.	24 One wise for himself has full enjoyment, and all who see him praise him;
25 Chacun ne vit qu’un certain nombre de jours, mais les jours d’Israël passeront toute mesure.	25 One wise for his people wins a heritage of glory, and his name endures forever.
26 Le sage jouira de la confiance de son peuple, son nom vivra à jamais.	26 My son, while you are well, govern your appetite so that you allow it not what is bad for you;
27 Mon enfant, vois toi-même ce qui te réussit: vois ce qui est mauvais pour toi et sache t’en priver.	27 For not every food is good for everyone, nor is everything suited to every taste.
28 Car tout ne convient pas à tous, et tout le monde ne s’accommode pas des mêmes choses.	28 Be not drawn after every enjoyment, neither become a glutton for choice foods,
29 N’abuse pas de tout ce qui te plaît, ne te jette pas sur la nourriture,	29 For sickness comes with overeating, and gluttony brings on biliousness.
30 car trop manger rend malade, et la goinfrerie provoque l’indigestion.	30 Through lack of self-control many have died, but the abstemious man prolongs his life.
31 Beaucoup de gens sont morts de leurs excès, alors qu’en se modérant ils auraient prolongé leur vie.
