SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Jó tomou a palavra nestes termos:	1 Then Job answered and said:
2 Ah! se pudessem pesar minha aflição, e pôr na balança com ela meu infortúnio!	2 Ah, could my anguish but be measured and my calamity laid with it in the scales,
3 esta aqui apareceria mais pesada do que a areia dos mares: eis por que minhas palavras são desvairadas.	3 They would now outweigh the sands of the sea! Because of this I speak without restraint.
4 As setas do Todo-poderoso estão cravadas em mim, e meu espírito bebe o veneno delas; os terrores de Deus me assediam	4 For the arrows of the Almighty pierce me, and my spirit drinks in their poison; the terrors of God are arrayed against me.
5 Porventura orneja o asno montês, quando tem erva? Muge o touro junto de sua forragem?	5 Does the wild ass bray when he has grass? Does the ox low over his fodder?
6 Come-se uma coisa insípida sem sal? Pode alguém saborear aquilo que não tem gosto algum?	6 Can a thing insipid be eaten without salt? Is there flavor in the white of an egg?
7 Minha alma recusa-se a tocar nisso, meu coração está desgostoso.	7 I refuse to touch them; they are loathsome food to me.
8 Quem me dera que meu voto se cumpra, e que Deus realize minha esperança!	8 Oh, that I might have my request, and that God would grant what I long for:
9 Que Deus consinta em esmagar-me, que deixe suas mãos cortarem meus dias!	9 Even that God would decide to crush me, that he would put forth his hand and cut me off!
10 Teria pelo menos um consolo, e exultaria em seu impiedoso tormento, por não ter renegado as palavras do Santo.	10 Then I should still have consolation and could exult through unremitting pain, because I have not transgressed the commands of the Holy One.
11 Pois, que é minha força para que eu espere, qual é meu fim, para me portar com paciência?	11 What strength have I that I should endure, and what is my limit that I should be patient?
12 Será que tenho a fortaleza das pedras, e será de bronze minha carne?	12 Have I the strength of stones, or is my flesh of bronze?
13 Não encontro socorro algum, qualquer esperança de salvação me foi tirada.	13 Have I no helper, and has advice deserted me?
14 Recusar a piedade a um amigo é abandonar o temor ao Todo-poderoso.	14 A friend owes kindness to one in despair, though he have forsaken the fear of the Almighty.
15 Meus irmãos são traiçoeiros como a torrente, como as águas das torrentes que somem.	15 My brethren are undependable as a brook, as watercourses that run dry in the wadies;
16 Rolam agitadas pelo gelo, empoçam-se com a neve derretida.	16 Though they may be black with ice, and with snow heaped upon them,
17 No tempo da seca, elas se esgotam, e ao vir o calor, seu leito seca.	17 Yet once they flow, they cease to be; in the heat, they disappear from their place.
18 as caravanas se desviam das veredas, penetram no deserto e perecem;	18 Caravans turn aside from their routes; they go into the desert and perish.
19 As caravanas de Tema espreitavam, os comboios de Sabá contavam com elas;	19 The caravans of Tema search, the companies of Sheba have hopes;
20 ficaram transtornados nas suas suposições: ao chegarem ao lugar, ficaram confusos.	20 They are disappointed, though they were confident; they come there and are frustrated.
21 É assim que falhais em cumprir o que de vós se esperava nesta hora; a vista de meu infortúnio vos aterroriza.	21 It is thus that you have now become for me; you see a terrifying thing and are afraid.
22 Porventura, disse-vos eu: Dai-me qualquer coisa de vossos bens, dai-me presentes,	22 Have I asked you to give me anything, to offer a gift for me from your possessions,
23 livrai-me da mão do inimigo, e tirai-me do poder dos violentos?	23 Or to deliver me from the enemy, or to redeem me from oppressors?
24 Ensinai-me e eu me calarei, mostrai-me em que falhei.	24 Teach me, and I will be silent; prove to me wherein I have erred.
25 Como são eficazes as expressões conforme a eqüidade! Mas em que podereis surpreender-me?	25 How agreeable are honest words; yet how unconvincing is your argument!
26 Pretendeis censurar palavras? Palavras desesperadas, leva-as o vento.	26 Do you consider your words as proof, but the sayings of a desperate man as wind?
27 Seríeis capazes de pôr em leilão até mesmo um órfão, de traficar o vosso amigo!	27 You would even cast lots for the orphan, and would barter away your friend!
28 Vamos, peço-vos, olhai para mim face a face, não mentirei.	28 Come, now, give me your attention; surely I will not lie to your face.
29 Vinde de novo; não sejais injustos; vinde: estou inocente nessa questão.	29 Think it over; let there be no injustice. Think it over; I still am right.
30 Haverá iniqüidade em minha língua? Meu paladar não sabe discernir o mal?	30 Is there insincerity on my tongue, or cannot my taste discern falsehood?
