Ecclesiastico 16

BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Non ti allegrare nelli figliuoli rei, s' egli multiplicheranno; non ti dilettare sopra loro, se il timore di Dio non è con loro.	1 Do not long for a brood of worthless children, and do not take pleasure in godless sons.
2 Non credere nella vita loro, e non guardare nelle loro fatiche.	2 However many you have, take no pleasure in them, unless the fear of the Lord lives among them.
3 Migliore è uno che tema Iddio, che mille rei figliuoli.	3 Do not count on their having long life, do not put too much faith in their number; for better have onethan a thousand, better die childless than have children who are godless.
4 Più utile è morire sanza figliuoli, che lasciarli rei e malvagi.	4 One person of sense can populate a city, but a race of lawless people will be destroyed.
5 La patria fia abitata da uno savio; e fia abbandonata da tre cattivi.	5 My eyes have seen many such things, my ears have heard things even more impressive.
6 Molte altre cose vidde l'occhio mio, e più fatti di questi udie l'orecchio mio.	6 Fire is kindled in a sinful society, Retribution blazes in a rebel ious nation.
7 Il fuoco arderae nella sinagoga delli peccanti, e l'ira arderae nella gente incredibile.	7 God did not pardon the giants of old who, confident in their strength, had rebel ed.
8 Li antichi giganti non adorarono per li peccati loro, i quali furono distrutti confidandosi nella loro forza.	8 He did not spare the people with whom Lot lived; he abhorred them, rather, for their pride.
9 E Dio non perdonò loro per che fussono in altrui terra; ma percosseli e maledisseli per la superbia del loro parlare.	9 He was pitiless to the nation of perdition -- those people who gloried in their sins-
10 Non ebbe misericordia di loro, uccidendo tutta quella gente che si esaltava nelli loro peccati.	10 as also to the six hundred thousand men on the march, who had banded together in their obstinacy.
11 E sì come di secento milia pedoni, ch' essi radunarono nella durizia del cuore suo; e se uno solo ne fosse issuto superbo, maraviglia sarebbe stato s'elli fosse scampato (sanza essere punito).	11 And had there been only one man stubborn, it would have been amazing had he escaped unpunished,since mercy and wrath alike belong to the Lord who is mighty to forgive and to pour out wrath.
12 Misericordia ed ira è con lui; potente è la biastemma e spandente l'ira.	12 As great as his mercy, so is his severity; he judges each person as his deeds deserve:
13 Secondo la misericordia sua, così fia lo castigamento; l' uomo è giudicato secondo le opere sue.	13 the sinner wil not escape with his il -gotten gains nor the patience of the devout go for nothing.
14 Lo peccatore non scamperà nella rapina, eziandio se la sofferenza indugerae coloro che fanno misericordia.	14 He takes note of every charitable action, and everyone is treated as he deserves.
15 Ogni misericordia farà luogo [a ciascuno] secondo li meriti delle opere sue, e secondo lo intendimento della peregrinazione sua.	15
16 Non dire: io mi nasconderoe da Dio, e chi Idi cielo si ricorderae di me?	16
17 Io non sarò conosciuto nel grande popolo; o che è l'anima mia in tante innumerabili creature?	17 Do not say, 'I shal hide from the Lord; who is going to remember me up there? I shall not be noticedamong so many people; what am I in the immensity of creation?'
18 Ecco il cielo [e i cieli] delli cieli, il mare e tutta la terra, e quelle cose che sono in essa si commoveranno nel conspetto suo.	18 For see, the sky and the heavens above the sky, the abyss and the earth shake at his visitation.
19 Li monti e insiememente li colli e le fondamenta della terra, quando Iddio li guaterae, per la paura si dibatteranno.	19 The mountains and earth's foundations alike quail and tremble when he looks at them.
20 E in tutte queste cose è cuore sanza sentimento; e ogni cuore è inteso da colui.	20 But to all this no one gives thought. Who keeps his movements in mind?
21 Or chi intende le vie di Dio? Chi intende la tempesta, la quale non vede l'occhio dell' uomo?	21 The storm wind itself is invisible, and most of what he does goes undetected.
22 Molte sue opere sono ascose a noi; ma chi annunzierà le opere della sua giustizia? Or chi lo sosterrà? Da lungi è il testamento d' alquanti; e la domanda delli uomini è in finire.	22 'Who wil report whether justice has been done? Who wil be watching? The covenant is remote!'
23 Colui che diminuisce nel suo cuore pensa cose vane; e l'uomo sciocco ed errante pensa le cose stolte.	23 Such are the thoughts of the person of little sense, stupid, misguided, cherishing his fol y.
24 Odimi, figliuolo, e appara la disciplina del senno; e nel cuore tuo attendi le mie parole.	24 Listen to me, my child, and learn knowledge, and give your whole mind to my words.
25 E parlerotti con ammaestramento e dirittura, e cercaroe di narrarti sapienza; e alle parole mie attendi col cuore tuo, e dicoti in dirittura li spiriti della virtude, che Iddio pose nelle opere sue dal cominciamento, e nella veritade dico la scienza sua.	25 I shal expound discipline methodically and proclaim knowledge with precision.
26 E nel giudicio di Dio furono le opere sue dal principio; dalla formazione degli uomini distinse la loro parte, e li cominciamenti disse nelle genti sue.	26 When God created his works in the beginning, he assigned them their places as soon as they weremade.
27 Adornò in eterno le opere di coloro; nè ebbono fame, nè lavorarono, e non cessarono delle opere sue.	27 He determined his works for al time, from their origins to their distant generations. They know neitherhunger nor weariness, and they never desert their duties.
28 Ciascuno non angoscerae il prossimo suo infino nel secolo.	28 Not one has ever got in the way of another, and they wil never disobey his word.
29 Non essere incredibile alla parola sua.	29 And afterwards the Lord looked at the earth, and filled it with his good things.
30 Dopo queste cose Iddio guardoe in terra, ed empiella de' suoi beni.	30 He covered its surface with every kind of animal, and to it they wil return.
31 Ogni anima vitale denunzioe inanzi la faccia di colui, e ancora il ritornamento medesimo di coloro.
