| 1 Si avvicinava la festa degli Azzimi, detta anche Pasqua, | 1 Now the feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called the Passover. |
| 2 e i capi dei sacerdoti e i dottori della legge cercavano come sopprimerlo. Però temevano il popolo. | 2 And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to put him to death; for they feared the people. |
| 3 Satana allora entrò in Giuda, chiamato Iscariota, che era nel numero dei Dodici. | 3 Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve; |
| 4 Ed egli andò a mettersi d'accordo con i capi dei sacerdoti e i capi della guardia sul modo di consegnare Gesù nelle loro mani. | 4 he went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers how he might betray him to them. |
| 5 Essi ne furono contenti e convennero di dargli del denaro. | 5 And they were glad, and engaged to give him money. |
| 6 Egli fu d'accordo e da quel momento cercava l'occasione propizia per consegnarlo loro senza che il popolo se ne accorgesse. | 6 So he agreed, and sought an opportunity to betray him to them in the absence of the multitude. |
| 7 Venne poi il giorno degli Azzimi, nel quale si doveva immolare la Pasqua. | 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the passover lamb had to be sacrificed. |
| 8 Gesù mandò Pietro e Giovanni, dicendo: "Andate a preparare per noi la Pasqua, perché possiamo mangiare". | 8 So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the passover for us, that we may eat it." |
| 9 Gli domandarono: "Dove vuoi che prepariamo?". | 9 They said to him, "Where will you have us prepare it?" |
| 10 Egli rispose: "Quando entrerete in città, vi verrà incontro un uomo che porta una brocca d'acqua. Seguitelo nella casa dove entrerà. | 10 He said to them, "Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him into the house which he enters, |
| 11 Poi direte al padrone di casa: "Il Maestro ti dice: Dov'è la sala in cui posso mangiare la Pasqua con i miei discepoli?". | 11 and tell the householder, 'The Teacher says to you, Where is the guest room, where I am to eat the passover with my disciples?' |
| 12 Egli vi mostrerà una grande sala, al piano superiore, arredata con divani: là preparate". | 12 And he will show you a large upper room furnished; there make ready." |
| 13 Essi andarono e trovarono tutto come aveva detto loro e prepararono la Pasqua. | 13 And they went, and found it as he had told them; and they prepared the passover. |
| 14 E quando venne l'ora, prese posto a tavola e con lui anche gli apostoli. | 14 And when the hour came, he sat at table, and the apostles with him. |
| 15 E disse: "Ho desiderato grandemente di mangiare questa Pasqua con voi, prima di patire, | 15 And he said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer; |
| 16 perché vi dico che non la mangerò più finché non sia compiuta nel regno di Dio". | 16 for I tell you I shall not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." |
| 17 E preso un calice, rese grazie e disse: "Prendetelo e fatelo passare tra voi, | 17 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, "Take this, and divide it among yourselves; |
| 18 poiché vi dico che da questo momento non berrò più del frutto della vite finché non sia venuto il regno di Dio". | 18 for I tell you that from now on I shall not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." |
| 19 Poi, preso un pane, rese grazie, lo spezzò e lo diede loro dicendo: "Questo è il mio corpo che è dato per voi. Fate questo in memoria di me". | 19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." |
| 20 Allo stesso modo, alla fine della cena, prese il calice dicendo: "Questo calice è la nuova alleanza nel mio sangue che è sparso per voi. | 20 And likewise the cup after supper, saying, "This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. |

| 23 Allora essi cominciarono a chiedersi chi di essi avrebbe fatto una cosa simile. | 23 And they began to question one another, which of them it was that would do this. |
| 24 E tra loro sorse anche una discussione: chi di essi doveva essere considerato il più grande. | 24 A dispute also arose among them, which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. |
| 25 Egli disse loro: "I re governano sui loro popoli e quelli che hanno il potere su di essi si fanno chiamare benefattori. | 25 And he said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and those in authority over them are called benefactors. |
| 26 Voi però non agite così; ma chi tra voi è il più grande diventi come il più piccolo e chi governa diventi come quello che serve. | 26 But not so with you; rather let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. |
| 27 Chi è infatti più grande: chi siede a tavola o chi sta a servire? Non è forse chi siede a tavola? Eppure io sono in mezzo a voi come uno che serve. | 27 For which is the greater, one who sits at table, or one who serves? Is it not the one who sits at table? But I am among you as one who serves. |
| 28 Voi siete quelli che sono rimasti con me nelle mie prove. | 28 "You are those who have continued with me in my trials; |
| 29 Ora, io preparo per voi un regno come il Padre l'ha preparato per me, | 29 and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, |
| 30 affinché mangiate e beviate alla mia tavola nel mio regno. E siederete sui troni per giudicare le dodici tribù d'Israele". | 30 that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. |
| 31 "Simone, Simone, ascolta! Satana ha ottenuto il permesso di passarvi al vaglio come il grano. | 31 "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, |
| 32 Ma io ho pregato per te, perché non venga meno la tua fede. E tu, quando sarai tornato, conferma i tuoi fratelli". | 32 but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail; and when you have turned again, strengthen your brethren." |
| 33 Pietro allora gli disse: "Signore, con te sono pronto ad andare in prigione ed anche alla morte". | 33 And he said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death." |
| 34 Gesù gli rispose: "Pietro, io ti dico: oggi non canterà il gallo prima che tu per tre volte abbia dichiarato di non conoscermi". | 34 He said, "I tell you, Peter, the cock will not crow this day, until you three times deny that you know me." |
| 35 Poi disse loro: "Quando vi mandai senza borsa, senza bisaccia e senza sandali, vi è mancato qualcosa?". Essi risposero: "Nulla". | 35 And he said to them, "When I sent you out with no purse or bag or sandals, did you lack anything?" They said, "Nothing." |
| 36 Allora egli disse: "Ora, però, chi ha una borsa la prenda, e così anche la bisaccia; e chi non ha una spada, venda il mantello e se ne compri una. | 36 He said to them, "But now, let him who has a purse take it, and likewise a bag. And let him who has no sword sell his mantle and buy one. |
| 37 Vi dico infatti che deve compiersi in me ciò che è scritto: E' stato messo nel numero dei malfattori. Infatti ciò che mi riguarda volge al suo compimento". | 37 For I tell you that this scripture must be fulfilled in me, 'And he was reckoned with transgressors'; for what is written about me has its fulfilment." |
| 38 Allora essi dissero: "Signore, ecco qui due spade". Ma egli rispose: "Basta!". | 38 And they said, "Look, Lord, here are two swords." And he said to them, "It is enough." |
| 39 Uscito se ne andò, secondo il suo solito, al monte degli Ulivi; lo seguirono anche i discepoli. | 39 And he came out, and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples followed him. |
| 40 Quando giunse sul luogo, disse loro: "Pregate per non cadere in tentazione". | 40 And when he came to the place he said to them, "Pray that you may not enter into temptation." |
| 41 Poi si allontanò da loro alcuni passi e, inginocchiatosi, pregava: | 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and knelt down and prayed, |
| 42 "Padre, se vuoi, allontana da me questo calice. Però non sia fatta la mia, ma la tua volontà". | 42 "Father, if thou art willing, remove this cup from me; nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done." |
| 43 Gli apparve allora un angelo dal cielo per confortarlo. | 43 And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. |
| 44 E, entrato in agonia, pregava più intensamente. E il suo sudore divenne come gocce di sangue che cadevano a terra. | 44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling upon the ground. |
| 45 Poi, alzatosi dalla preghiera, andò dai discepoli e li trovò addormentati, a motivo della tristezza. | 45 And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, |
| 46 Disse loro: "Perché dormite? Alzatevi e pregate per non cadere in tentazione". | 46 and he said to them, "Why do you sleep? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation." |
| 47 Mentre egli ancora parlava, ecco giunse una folla di gente; li precedeva colui che si chiamava Giuda, uno dei Dodici. Si avvicinò a Gesù per baciarlo. | 47 While he was still speaking, there came a crowd, and the man called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him; |
| 48 Gesù gli disse: "Giuda, con un bacio tradisci il Figlio dell'uomo?". | 48 but Jesus said to him, "Judas, would you betray the Son of man with a kiss?" |
| 49 Quelli che erano con lui, appena si accorsero di quello che stava per accadere, dissero: "Signore, dobbiamo usare la spada?". | 49 And when those who were about him saw what would follow, they said, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?" |
| 50 E uno di loro colpì il servo del sommo sacerdote e gli staccò l'orecchio destro. | 50 And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. |
| 51 Ma Gesù intervenne e disse: "Smettete, basta così!". E toccandogli l'orecchio, lo guarì. | 51 But Jesus said, "No more of this!" And he touched his ear and healed him. |
| 52 Disse poi Gesù ai gran sacerdoti, agli ufficiali del tempio ed agli anziani che erano venuti contro di lui: "Siete usciti con spade e bastoni come contro un delinquente. | 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders, who had come out against him, "Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? |
| 53 Eppure ogni giorno io stavo con voi nel tempio e non mi avete mai arrestato. Ma questa è l'ora vostra e la potenza delle tenebre". | 53 When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness." |
| 54 Dopo averlo catturato, lo condussero via e lo introdussero nella casa del sommo sacerdote. Pietro intanto lo seguiva da lontano. | 54 Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest's house. Peter followed at a distance; |
| 55 In mezzo al cortile era acceso un fuoco, molti vi stavano seduti attorno e Pietro si sedette in mezzo a loro. | 55 and when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. |
| 56 Una serva lo vide seduto vicino al fuoco e fissandolo disse: "Anche quest'uomo stava con lui". | 56 Then a maid, seeing him as he sat in the light and gazing at him, said, "This man also was with him." |
| 57 Ma egli negò dicendo: "Donna, non lo conosco!". | 57 But he denied it, saying, "Woman, I do not know him." |
| 58 Poco dopo un altro, vedendolo, disse: "Anche tu sei uno di loro". Ma Pietro rispose: "No, non lo sono". | 58 And a little later some one else saw him and said, "You also are one of them." But Peter said, "Man, I am not." |
| 59 Dopo circa un'ora, un altro insisté dicendo: "E' vero, anche questi era con lui; infatti è un galileo". | 59 And after an interval of about an hour still another insisted, saying, "Certainly this man also was with him; for he is a Galilean." |
| 60 Ma Pietro disse: "O uomo, non so quello che dici". In quell'istante, mentre Pietro parlava ancora, un gallo cantò. | 60 But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are saying." And immediately, while he was still speaking, the cock crowed. |
| 61 Allora il Signore, voltatosi, guardò Pietro, e Pietro si ricordò della parola del Signore, il quale gli aveva detto: "Oggi, prima che il gallo canti, mi rinnegherai tre volte". | 61 And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, "Before the cock crows today, you will deny me three times." |
| 62 E uscito fuori, pianse amaramente. | 62 And he went out and wept bitterly. |
| 63 Intanto gli uomini che avevano in custodia Gesù lo deridevano e lo percuotevano. | 63 Now the men who were holding Jesus mocked him and beat him; |
| 64 Gli bendavano gli occhi e gli domandavano: "Indovina: chi ti ha colpito?". | 64 they also blindfolded him and asked him, "Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?" |
| 65 E dicevano contro di lui molte altre cose, bestemmiando. | 65 And they spoke many other words against him, reviling him. |
| 66 Appena fu giorno, si riunirono i capi del popolo insieme ai sommi sacerdoti e ai dottori della legge. Lo condussero davanti al sinedrio | 66 When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes; and they led him away to their council, and they said, |
| 67 e gli dissero: "Se tu sei il Cristo, dillo a noi!". Gesù rispose: "Anche se ve lo dico, voi non mi crederete. | 67 "If you are the Christ, tell us." But he said to them, "If I tell you, you will not believe; |
| 68 Se invece vi interrogo, voi non mi risponderete. | 68 and if I ask you, you will not answer. |
| 69 Ma d'ora in poi il Figlio dell'uomo siederà alla destra della potenza di Dio". | 69 But from now on the Son of man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God." |
| 70 Allora tutti domandarono: "Tu dunque sei il Figlio di Dio?". Egli rispose loro: "Voi dite che io lo sono". | 70 And they all said, "Are you the Son of God, then?" And he said to them, "You say that I am." |
| 71 Essi conclusero: "Che bisogno abbiamo ancora di testimonianza? Noi stessi l'abbiamo udito dalla sua bocca". | 71 And they said, "What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips." |
