| 1 Io Nabuchodonosor vivea in pace nella mia casa, e felice nella mia reggia: | 1 King Nebuchadnezzar to all peoples, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you! |
| 2 Vidi un sogno, che mi spavento, e i miei pensieri, e le visioni, che mi passarono per la testa nel mio letto, mi diedero turbamento. | 2 It has seemed good to me to show the signs and wonders that the Most High God has wrought toward me. |
| 3 E fu fatto da me un decreto, che fosser condotti dinanzi a me tutti i sapienti di Babilonia, affinchè mi desser la spiegazione del mio sogno. | 3 How great are his signs, how mighty his wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation. |
| 4 Allora furon introdotti gl'indovini, i magi, i Caldei, e gli aruspici, ed io esposi il mio sogno dinanzi ad essi; ed ei non me ne diedero la spiegazione: | 4 I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at ease in my house and prospering in my palace. |
| 5 Fino a tanto, che il collega Daniele (che si dice Baltassar dal nome del mio Dio, il quale ha in se lo spirito degli dei santi) venne al mio cospetto, e davanti a lui io esposi il mio sogno. | 5 I had a dream which made me afraid; as I lay in bed the fancies and the visions of my head alarmed me. |
| 6 Baltassar, principe degl'indovini, perchè io so, che lo spirito degli dei santi abita in te, e nissun arcano è impenetrabile a te, sponimi le visioni, che io ho vedute ne' miei sogni, ed il loro significato: | 6 Therefore I made a decree that all the wise men of Babylon should be brought before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream. |
| 7 Ecco la visione, che io ebbi in testa nel mio letto: Io vedeva repentinamente un albero di eccedente grandezza nel mezzo della terra, | 7 Then the magicians, the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the astrologers came in; and I told them the dream, but they could not make known to me its interpretation. |
| 8 Un albero grande, e robusto, l'altezza del quale toccava il cielo, e faceasi vedere sino ai confini di tutta la terra. | 8 At last Daniel came in before me--he who was named Belteshazzar after the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods --and I told him the dream, saying, |
| 9 Le sue foglie eran bellissime, e senza numero i suoi frutti, ed eravi da mangiare per tutti: sotto di esso abitavano animali, e fiere, e sui rami di lui facean nido gli uccelli dell'aria: ed ogni animal vivente da esso avea il suo cibo. | 9 "O Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you and that no mystery is difficult for you, here is the dream which I saw; tell me its interpretation. |
| 10 Questa visione la ebbi in testa nel mio letto: ed ecco il Vigilante, ed il Santo scese dal cielo; | 10 The visions of my head as I lay in bed were these: I saw, and behold, a tree in the midst of the earth; and its height was great. |
| 11 E gridò ad alta voce, e disse così: Troncate l'albero, e recidete i suoi rami, e gettate giù le foglie, e spergete i suoi frutti: fuggan le bestie, che vi stanno all'ombra, e gli uccelli da' rami di esso. | 11 The tree grew and became strong, and its top reached to heaven, and it was visible to the end of the whole earth. |
| 12 Lasciate però nella terra una punta di sue radici: sia legato con catene di ferro, e di bronzo tralle erbe all'aperto, e sia bagnato dalla rugiada del cielo, e colle bestie abbia comune l'erba de' campi. | 12 Its leaves were fair and its fruit abundant, and in it was food for all. The beasts of the field found shade under it, and the birds of the air dwelt in its branches, and all flesh was fed from it. |
| 13 Cangisi a lui il cuore di uomo, e se gli dia un cuore di fiera; e sette tempi passino (così) per lui. | 13 "I saw in the visions of my head as I lay in bed, and behold, a watcher, a holy one, came down from heaven. |
| 14 Per sentenza dei vigilanti è stabilito così, e giusta le parole, e la petizione de' santi, fino a tanto che i viventi conoscano, che l'Altissimo ha dominio sopra il regno degli uomini, e darallo a chi gli parrà; e sopra di esso porrà l'uomo più abbietto. | 14 He cried aloud and said thus, 'Hew down the tree and cut off its branches, strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit; let the beasts flee from under it and the birds from its branches. |
| 15 Questo vidi in sogno io re Nabuchodonosor. Tu adunque, o Baltassar, dimmi tosto la sua interpretazione; perocché i sapienti tutti del mio regno non posson dirmene la spiegazione: ma tu il puoi, perchè lo spinto degli dei santi è in te. | 15 But leave the stump of its roots in the earth, bound with a band of iron and bronze, amid the tender grass of the field. Let him be wet with the dew of heaven; let his lot be with the beasts in the grass of the earth; |
| 16 Allora Daniele, che diceasi Baltassar, stette sopra di se pensoso, e in silenzio quasi per un'ora, e i suoi pensieri lo conturbavano. Ma il re riprese, e disse: Baltassarre, non faccia pena a te il sogno, e la sua significazione. Rispose Baltassarre, e disse: Signor mio, questo sogno cada sopra quegli, che a te voglion male, e la sua interpretazione sopra de' tuoi nemici. | 16 let his mind be changed from a mans, and let a beast's mind be given to him; and let seven times pass over him. |
| 17 L'albero, che tu hai veduto sublime, e robusto, l'altezza del quale tocca il cielo, e il quale è visibile per tutta la terra, | 17 The sentence is by the decree of the watchers, the decision by the word of the holy ones, to the end that the living may know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men, and gives it to whom he will, and sets over it the lowliest of men.' |
| 18 I rami di cui sono bellissimi, e senza numero i frutti, e da cui tutti hanno loro cibo, e sotto di esso abitano le bestie del campo, e su' rami suoi fan nido gli uccelli dell'aria, | 18 This dream I, King Nebuchadnezzar, saw. And you, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation, because all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation, but you are able, for the spirit of the holy gods is in you." |
| 19 Tu se' (l'albero,) o re, che se' divenuto grande, e robusto, e la tua grandezza è cresciuta, e si è alzata fino al cielo, e la tua possanza fino alle estremità di tutta la terra. | 19 Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was dismayed for a moment, and his thoughts alarmed him. The king said, "Belteshazzar, let not the dream or the interpretation alarm you." Belteshazzar answered, "My lord, may the dream be for those who hate you and its interpretation for your enemies! |
| 20 Quanto a quello poi, che il re ha veduto il vigilante, ed il santo scendere dal cielo, e dire: Troncate l'albero, e fatelo in pezzi: ma lasciate però in terra una punta di sue radici: ed ei sia legato con ferro, e bronzo, e stia all'aperto sull'erba, e sia asperso dalla rugiada del cielo, e colle fiere abbia comune il pascolo, fino a tanto che sette tempi passino per lui così, | 20 The tree you saw, which grew and became strong, so that its top reached to heaven, and it was visible to the end of the whole earth; |
| 21 Questa è l'interpretazione della sentenza dell'Altissimo pronunziata contro il re mio signore: | 21 whose leaves were fair and its fruit abundant, and in which was food for all; under which beasts of the field found shade, and in whose branches the birds of the air dwelt-- |
| 22 Ti cacceranno dalla compagnia degli uomini, e colle bestie, e colle nere avrai comune l'albergo, e qual bue mangerai del fieno, e dalla rugiada del cielo sarai asperso: e sette tempi passeranno così per te, fino a tanto che tu conosca, come l'Altissimo ha dominio sopra il regno degli uomini, e lo dà a chi gli pare. | 22 it is you, O king, who have grown and become strong. Your greatness has grown and reaches to heaven, and your dominion to the ends of the earth. |
| 23 Quanto poi all'ordine dato di lasciare una punta delle radici dell'albero, il tuo regno resterà a te, dopo che avrai conosciuto, che una potestà è in cielo. | 23 And whereas the king saw a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven and saying, 'Hew down the tree and destroy it, but leave the stump of its roots in the earth, bound with a band of iron and bronze, in the tender grass of the field; and let him be wet with the dew of heaven; and let his lot be with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him'; |
| 24 Per la qual cosa, o re, sia accetto a te il mio consiglio, e riscatta colle limosine i tuoi peccati, e le tue iniquità col far misericordia co' poveri: forse che egli perdonerà i tuoi peccati. | 24 this is the interpretation, O king: It is a decree of the Most High, which has come upon my lord the king, |
| 25 Tutte queste cose avvennero a Nabuchodonosor re. | 25 that you shall be driven from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field; you shall be made to eat grass like an ox, and you shall be wet with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over you, till you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men, and gives it to whom he will. |
| 26 Dodici mesi dappoi passeggiava egli pel palazzo di Babilonia. | 26 And as it was commanded to leave the stump of the roots of the tree, your kingdom shall be sure for you from the time that you know that Heaven rules. |
| 27 E il re prese a dire: Non è ella questa la gran Babilonia, che io ho edificata per sede del regno colla robusta fortezza mia, e collo splendore della mia gloria? | 27 Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you; break off your sins by practicing righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the oppressed, that there may perhaps be a lengthening of your tranquillity." |
| 28 E il re non avea finito di dir questo, quando venne repentina voce dal cielo: A te si dice, o re Nabuchodonosor: Il tuo regno non sarà più tuo; | 28 All this came upon King Nebuchadnezzar. |
| 29 E ti discacceranno dalla compagnia degli uomini, e abiterai tralle bestie, e tralle fiere, e qual bue mangerai del fieno, e sette tempi passeranno cosi per te, fino a tanto, che tu conosca, che l'Altissimo ha dominio sopra il regno degli uomini, e lo dà a chi gli pare. | 29 At the end of twelve months he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, |
| 30 Nello stesso punto si adempiè sopra Nabuchodonosor questa parola, fu cacciato dalla compagnia degli uomini, e mangiò fieno qual bue, e il suo corpo fu bagnato dalla rugiada del cielo, talmente che crebbero a lui i capelli come penne di un'aquila, e le unghie come gli ugnelli de' volatili. | 30 and the king said, "Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by my mighty power as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty?" |
| 31 Ma finiti que' giorni, io Nabuchodonosor alzai al cielo gli occhi miei, e mi fu renduta la mia mente, e benedissi l'Altissimo, e lodai, e glorificai colui, che vive in sempiterno; perocché la possanza di lui è eterna, e il regno di lui per tutte le generazioni; | 31 While the words were still in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, "O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: The kingdom has departed from you, |
| 32 E tutti gli abitatori della terra sono stimati davanti a lui un niente; perocché secondo il voler suo egli dispone tanto delle virtù del cielo, come degli abitatori della terra, e non è chi alla mano di lui resista, e dica a lui: Per qual motivo hai tu fatto questo? | 32 and you shall be driven from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field; and you shall be made to eat grass like an ox; and seven times shall pass over you, until you have learned that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will." |
| 33 In quello stesso punto ritornò in me la mia mente, e rientrai nell'onore, e nella magnificenza del mio regno, e tornò a me la mia prima figura, e i miei magnati, e i magistrati cercaron di me, e fui rimesso nel mio regno, e la mia grandezza si accrebbe. | 33 Immediately the word was fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar. He was driven from among men, and ate grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hair grew as long as eagles' feathers, and his nails were like birds' claws. |
| 34 Or adunque io Nabuchodonosor lodo, e celebro, e glorifico il Re del cielo, perchè le opere di lui sono rette, e le sue vie sono giustizia, ed egli può umiliare i superbi. | 34 At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored him who lives for ever; for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation; |
| 35 all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing; and he does according to his will in the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, "What doest thou?" |
| 36 At the same time my reason returned to me; and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and splendor returned to me. My counselors and my lords sought me, and I was established in my kingdom, and still more greatness was added to me. |
| 37 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven; for all his works are right and his ways are just; and those who walk in pride he is able to abase. |
