| 1 ALEPH. Come mai il Signore nel furor suo ha coperta di caligine la figliuola di Sion? Egli ha cacciata dal ciel sulla terra la gloria d'Israele, e non si è ricordato dello sgabello de' piedi suoi nel giorno del suo furore. | 1 How the Lord in his anger has set the daughter of Zion under a cloud! He has cast down from heaven to earth the splendor of Israel; he has not remembered his footstool in the day of his anger. |
| 2 BETH. Il Signore ha distrutto senza eccezione tutto quello, che era di bello in Giacobbe: ha smantellati nel suo furore i baluardi della vergine di Giuda, gli ha agguagliati al suolo: ha trattato come profano il regno, e i suoi principi. | 2 The Lord has destroyed without mercy all the habitations of Jacob; in his wrath he has broken down the strongholds of the daughter of Judah; he has brought down to the ground in dishonor the kingdom and its rulers. |
| 3 GHIMEL. Egli ha ridotta in polvere nell'ira sua furibonda tutta la possanza d' Israele: l'ausiliatrice sua destra ritrasse indietro al venir del nimico, e quasi fuoco accese in Giacobbe, che ogni cosa all'intorno divora colla sua fiamma. | 3 He has cut down in fierce anger all the might of Israel; he has withdrawn from them his right hand in the face of the enemy; he has burned like a flaming fire in Jacob, consuming all around. |
| 4 DALETH. Egli come nemico tese il suo arco, e come avversario puntò la sua destra: tutto uccise quel, che era di bello a vedersi nel padiglione della figliuola di Sion: scagliò qual fuoco la sua indegnazione. | 4 He has bent his bow like an enemy, with his right hand set like a foe; and he has slain all the pride of our eyes in the tent of the daughter of Zion; he has poured out his fury like fire. |
| 5 HE. I Signore è diventato come nemico: ha precipitato Israele, ha precipitate tutte le sue mura, ha dissipati i suoi baluardi, e tutti ha umiliati gli uomini, e le donne della figliuola di Giuda. | 5 The Lord has become like an enemy, he has destroyed Israel; he has destroyed all its palaces, laid in ruins its strongholds; and he has multiplied in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation. |
| 6 VAU. E ha rovesciatala sua tenda come quella di un orto, e ha atterrato il suo padiglione: il Signore ha fatte dimenticare in Sionne le solennità, e i sabati, ed ha abbandonati all'obbrobrio, e all'indegnazione sua furibonda e il re, e il sacerdote. | 6 He has broken down his booth like that of a garden, laid in ruins the place of his appointed feasts; the LORD has brought to an end in Zion appointed feast and sabbath, and in his fierce indignation has spurned king and priest. |
| 7 ZAIN. Il Signore ha rigettato il suo altare, ha maledetto il suo santuario: ha date in potere del nemico le sue mura, e le torri. Hanno alzate le voci nella casa del Signore, come ne' dì solenni. | 7 The Lord has scorned his altar, disowned his sanctuary; he has delivered into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces; a clamor was raised in the house of the LORD as on the day of an appointed feast. |
| 8 HETH. Determinò il Signore di distrugger le mura della figliuola di Sion, tese sua corda, e non ritrasse sua mano dal de molire, e l'antemurale gemè, e il muro insieme fu atterrato. | 8 The LORD determined to lay in ruins the wall of the daughter of Zion; he marked it off by the line; he restrained not his hand from destroying; he caused rampart and wall to lament, they languish together. |
| 9 TETH. Le sue porte sono confitte nella terra: egli guastò, e spezzò le sue serrature: esiliò il suo re, e i suoi principi tralle nazioni: non v' ha più legge, e i suoi profeti non hanno visione dal Signore. | 9 Her gates have sunk into the ground; he has ruined and broken her bars; her king and princes are among the nations; the law is no more, and her prophets obtain no vision from the LORD. |
| 10 JOD. Seggono per terra, in silenzio gli anziani della figliuola di Sion: hanno cosperse le loro teste di cenere, sono vestiti di cilizi; si son gittate col capo per terra le vergini di Gerusalemme. | 10 The elders of the daughter of Zion sit on the ground in silence; they have cast dust on their heads and put on sackcloth; the maidens of Jerusalem have bowed their heads to the ground. |
| 11 CAPH. Gli occhi miei venner meno per la copia delle lagrime, le mie viscere si conturbarono, il cuor mi cadde per terra per lo scempio della figlia del popol mio, quando i fanciulli, e i bambini di latte venivan meno per le piazze della città. | 11 My eyes are spent with weeping; my soul is in tumult; my heart is poured out in grief because of the destruction of the daughter of my people, because infants and babes faint in the streets of the city. |
| 12 LAMED. Ei dicevano alle loro madri: Dov' è il grano, ed il vino? Allorché quasi fosser feriti venivan mancando pelle piazze della città, allorché rendevan loro spiriti in seno alle madri loro. | 12 They cry to their mothers, "Where is bread and wine?" as they faint like wounded men in the streets of the city, as their life is poured out on their mothers' bosom. |
| 13 MEM. A qual cosa ti paragonerò, od a guai cosa ti assomiglierò, o figliuola di Gerusalemme? A chi agguaglerò per consolarti, o vergine figlia di Sion? Grande qual mare e la tua afflizione: chi appresterà a te medicina? | 13 What can I say for you, to what compare you, O daughter of Jerusalem? What can I liken to you, that I may comfort you, O virgin daughter of Zion? For vast as the sea is your ruin; who can restore you? |
| 14 NUN. I tuoi profeti ti profetizzarono cose false, ed insulse, ne a te disvelavan la tua iniquità per muoverti a penitenza: ed ei profetavano a te falsamente annunzi gravi, e discacciamenti. | 14 Your prophets have seen for you false and deceptive visions; they have not exposed your iniquity to restore your fortunes, but have seen for you oracles false and misleading. |
| 15 SAMECH. Batteron palma a palma sopra di te tutti quei, che passavano per la strada, facean fischiate, e scuotevano il capo verso la figliuola di Gerusalemme, dicendo: E' ella questa la città di perfetta bellezza, il gaudio di tutta quanta la terra? | 15 All who pass along the way clap their hands at you; they hiss and wag their heads at the daughter of Jerusalem; "Is this the city which was called the perfection of beauty, the joy of all the earth?" |
| 16 PHE. Contro di te aperser la bocca tutti i tuoi nemici, fecero fischiate, e digrignavano i denti, e dissero: Noi la di voreremo: ecco il giorno aspettato da noi, l'abbiam trovato, l'abbiam veduto. | 16 All your enemies rail against you; they hiss, they gnash their teeth, they cry: "We have destroyed her! Ah, this is the day we longed for; now we have it; we see it!" |
| 17 AIN. Il Signore ha fatto quello, che stabilì, ha adempiuta la sua parola annunziata sino da' giorni antichi: ti ha distrutta senza remissione; e ti ha renduta argomento di allegrezza pe' tuoi nemici, ed ha innalzata la possanza di color, che ti odiavano. | 17 The LORD has done what he purposed, has carried out his threat; as he ordained long ago, he has demolished without pity; he has made the enemy rejoice over you, and exalted the might of your foes. |
| 18 SADE. Il loro cuore alzò le grida al Signore sulle mura della figliuola di Sion: versa dì, e notte a guisa di torrente le lagrime, non darti riposo, e quiete non abbia la pupilla dell'occhio tuo. | 18 Cry aloud to the Lord! O daughter of Zion! Let tears stream down like a torrent day and night! Give yourself no rest, your eyes no respite! |
| 19 COPH. Alzati, (dà laude) al Signore la notte, al cominciar delle vigilie: spandi com' acqua il cuor tuo al cospetto del Signore; alza a lui le tue mani per l'anima de' tuoi fanciulli venuti meno per la fame ad ogni angolo di tutte le strade. | 19 Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the watches! Pour out your heart like water before the presence of the Lord! Lift your hands to him for the lives of your children, who faint for hunger at the head of every street. |
| 20 RES. Mira, o Signore, e considera chi tu abbi desolata in tal guisa. E sarà dunque vero, che mangin le donne i propri parti, i bambini della grandezza della palma della mano: E sarà egli ucciso nel santuario del Signore il sacerdote, e il profeta? | 20 Look, O LORD, and see! With whom hast thou dealt thus? Should women eat their offspring, the children of their tender care? Should priest and prophet be slain in the sanctuary of the Lord? |
| 21 SIN. Giacquer fuora per terra (uccisi) i fanciulli, e i vecchi: le mie vergini, e i miei giovani son caduti di spada: gli hai uccisi nel giorno del tuo furore, senza remissione gli hai percossi. | 21 In the dust of the streets lie the young and the old; my maidens and my young men have fallen by the sword; in the day of thy anger thou hast slain them, slaughtering without mercy. |
| 22 THAU. Tu hai chiamata come ad una gran festa questa nazione, che da ogni banda mi spaventasse, e nel giorno del tuo furore nissuno fu, che scappar potesse, e restar salvo: quegli, che io alle vai, e nutrii, li consumò il nemico. | 22 Thou didst invite as to the day of an appointed feast my terrors on every side; and on the day of the anger of the LORD none escaped or survived; those whom I dandled and reared my enemy destroyed. |
