Matthew 15

1 Then came to him from Jerusalem scribes and Pharisees, saying:	1 Then Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem came to Jesus and said,
2 Why do thy disciples trangress the tradition of the ancients? For they wash not their hands when they eat bread.	2 'Why do your disciples break away from the tradition of the elders? They eat without washing theirhands.'
3 But he answering, said to them: Why do you also transgress the commandment of God for your tradition? For God said:	3 He answered, 'And why do you break away from the commandment of God for the sake of yourtradition?
4 Honour thy father and mother: And: He that shall curse father or mother, let him die the death.	4 For God said, "Honour your father and your mother" and "Anyone who curses his father or mother wilbe put to death."
5 But you say: Whosoever shall say to father or mother, The gift whatsoever proceedeth from me, shall profit thee.	5 But you say, "If anyone says to his father or mother: Anything I might have used to help you isdedicated to God,
6 And he shall not honour his father or his mother: and you have made void the commandment of God for your tradition.	6 he is rid of his duty to father or mother." In this way you have made God's word ineffective by means ofyour tradition.
7 Hypocrites, well hath Isaias prophesied of you, saying:	7 Hypocrites! How rightly Isaiah prophesied about you when he said:
8 This people honoureth me with their lips: but their heart is far from me.	8 This people honours me only with lip-service, while their hearts are far from me.
9 And in vain do they worship me, teaching doctrines and commandments of men.	9 Their reverence of me is worthless; the lessons they teach are nothing but human commandments.'
10 And having called together the multitudes unto him, he said to them: Hear ye and understand.	10 He called the people to him and said, 'Listen, and understand.
11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man: but what cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.	11 What goes into the mouth does not make anyone unclean; it is what comes out of the mouth thatmakes someone unclean.'
12 Then came his disciples, and said to him: Dost thou know that the Pharisees, when they heard this word, were scandalized?	12 Then the disciples came to him and said, 'Do you know that the Pharisees were shocked when theyheard what you said?'
13 But he answering them, said: Every plant which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.	13 He replied, 'Any plant my heavenly Father has not planted wil be pul ed up by the roots.
14 Let them alone: they are blind, and leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into the pit.	14 Leave them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind; and if one blind person leads another, both wilfal into a pit.'
15 And Peter answering, said to him: Expound to us this parable.	15 At this, Peter said to him, 'Explain the parable for us.'
16 But he said: Are you also yet without understanding?	16 Jesus replied, 'Even you -- don't you yet understand?
17 Do you not understand, that whatsoever entereth into the mouth, goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the privy?	17 Can't you see that whatever goes into the mouth passes through the stomach and is discharged intothe sewer?
18 But the things which proceed out of the mouth, come forth from the heart, and those things defile a man.	18 But whatever comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and it is this that makes someoneunclean.
19 For from the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemies.	19 For from the heart come evil intentions: murder, adultery, fornication, theft, perjury, slander.
20 These are the things that defile a man. But to eat with unwashed hands doth not defile a man.	20 These are the things that make a person unclean. But eating with unwashed hands does not makeanyone unclean.'
21 And Jesus went from thence, and retired into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.	21 Jesus left that place and withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.
22 And behold a woman of Canaan who came out of those coasts, crying out, said to him: Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David: my daughter is grieviously troubled by the devil.	22 And suddenly out came a Canaanite woman from that district and started shouting, 'Lord, Son ofDavid, take pity on me. My daughter is tormented by a devil.'
23 Who answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying: Send her away, for she crieth after us:	23 But he said not a word in answer to her. And his disciples went and pleaded with him, saying, 'Giveher what she wants, because she keeps shouting after us.'
24 And he answering, said: I was not sent but to the sheep that are lost of the house of Israel.	24 He said in reply, 'I was sent only to the lost sheep of the House of Israel.'
25 But she came and adored him, saying: Lord, help me.	25 But the woman had come up and was bowing low before him. 'Lord,' she said, 'help me.'
26 Who answering, said: It is not good to take the bread of the children, and to cast it to the dogs.	26 He replied, 'It is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to little dogs.'
27 But she said: Yea, Lord; for the whelps also eat of the crumbs that fall from the table of their masters.	27 She retorted, 'Ah yes, Lord; but even little dogs eat the scraps that fal from their masters' table.'
28 Then Jesus answering, said to her: O woman, great is thy faith: be it done to thee as thou wilt: and her daughter was cured from that hour.	28 Then Jesus answered her, 'Woman, you have great faith. Let your desire be granted.' And from thatmoment her daughter was wel again.
29 And when Jesus had passed away from thence, he came nigh the sea of Galilee. And going up into a mountain, he sat there.	29 Jesus went on from there and reached the shores of the Lake of Galilee, and he went up onto themountain. He took his seat,
30 And there came to him great multitudes, having with them the dumb, the blind, the lame, the maimed, and many others: and they cast them down at his feet, and he healed them:	30 and large crowds came to him bringing the lame, the crippled, the blind, the dumb and many others;these they put down at his feet, and he cured them.
31 So that the multitudes marvelled seeing the dumb speak, the lame walk, and the blind see: and they glorified the God of Israel.	31 The crowds were astonished to see the dumb speaking, the cripples whole again, the lame walkingand the blind with their sight, and they praised the God of Israel.
32 And Jesus called together his disciples, and said: I have compassion on the multitudes, because they continue with me now three days, and have not what to eat, and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.	32 But Jesus cal ed his disciples to him and said, 'I feel sorry for al these people; they have been withme for three days now and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them off hungry, or they might col apse onthe way.'
33 And the disciples say unto him: Whence then should we have so many loaves in the desert, as to fill so great a multitude?	33 The disciples said to him, 'Where in a deserted place could we get sufficient bread for such a largecrowd to have enough to eat?'
34 And Jesus said to them: How many loaves have you? But they said: Seven, and a few little fishes.	34 Jesus said to them, 'How many loaves have you?' They said, 'Seven, and a few smal fish.'
35 And he commanded the multitude to sit down upon the ground.	35 Then he instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground,
36 And taking the seven loaves and the fishes, and giving thanks, he brake, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the people.	36 and he took the seven loaves and the fish, and after giving thanks he broke them and began handingthem to the disciples, who gave them to the crowds.
37 And they did all eat, and had their fill. And they took up seven baskets full, of what remained of the fragments.	37 They al ate as much as they wanted, and they col ected what was left of the scraps, seven basketsful .
38 And they that did eat, were four thousand men, beside children and women.	38 Now four thousand men had eaten, to say nothing of women and children.
39 And having dismissed the multitude, he went up into a boat, and came into the coasts of Magedan.	39 And when he had sent the crowds away he got into the boat and went to the territory of Magadan.
