A psalm for Asaph. The God of gods, the Lord hath spoken: and he hath called the earth. From the rising of the sun, to the going down thereof:1 [Psalm Of Asaph] The God of gods, Yahweh, is speaking, from east to west he summons the earth.
out of Sion the loveliness of his beauty.2 From Zion, perfection of beauty, he shines forth;
God shall come manifestly: our God shall come, and shall not keep silence. A fire shall burn before him: and a mighty tempest shall be round about him.3 he is coming, our God, and wil not be silent. Devouring fire ahead of him, raging tempest around him,
He shall call heaven from above, and the earth, to judge his people.4 he summons the heavens from on high, and the earth to judge his people.
Gather ye together his saints to him: who set his covenant before sacrifices.5 'Gather to me my faithful, who sealed my covenant by sacrifice.'
And the heavens shall declare his justice: for God is judge.6 The heavens proclaim his saving justice, 'God himself is judge.'Pause
Hear, O my people, and I will speak: O Israel, and I will testify to thee: I am God, thy God.7 'Listen, my people, I am speaking, Israel, I am giving evidence against you, I, God, your God.
I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices: and thy burnt offerings are always in my sight.8 'It is not with your sacrifices that I find fault, those burnt offerings constantly before me;
I will not take calves out of thy house: nor he goats out of thy flocks.9 I will not accept any bul from your homes, nor a single goat from your folds.
For all the beasts of the woods are mine: the cattle on the hills, and the oxen.10 'For all forest creatures are mine already, the animals on the mountains in their thousands.
I know all the fowls of the air: and with me is the beauty of the field.11 I know every bird in the air, whatever moves in the fields is mine.
If I should be hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.12 'If I am hungry I shall not tel you, since the world and all it holds is mine.
Shall I eat the flesh of bullocks? or shall I drink the blood of goats?13 Am I to eat the flesh of bul s or drink the blood of goats?
Offer to God the sacrifice of praise: and pay thy vows to the most High.14 'Let thanksgiving be your sacrifice to God, fulfil the vows you make to the Most High;
And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.15 then if you call to me in time of trouble I wil rescue you and you wil honour me.'
But to the sinner God hath said: Why dost thou declare my justices, and take my covenant in thy mouth ?16 But to the wicked, God says: 'What right have you to recite my statutes, to take my covenant on yourlips,
Seeing thou hast hated discipline: and hast cast my words behind thee.17 when you detest my teaching, and thrust my words behind you?
If thou didst see a thief thou didst run with him: and with adulterers thou hast been a partaker.18 'You make friends with a thief as soon as you see one, you feel at home with adulterers,
Thy mouth hath abounded with evil, and thy tongue framed deceits.19 your conversation is devoted to wickedness, and your tongue to inventing lies.
Sitting thou didst speak against thy brother, and didst lay a scandal against thy mother's son:20 'You sit there, slandering your own brother, you malign your own mother's son.
these things hast thou done, and I was silent. Thou thoughtest unjustly that I should be like to thee: but I will reprove thee, and set before thy face.21 You do this, and am I to say nothing? Do you think that I am really like you? I charge you, indict youto your face.
Understand these things, you that forget God; lest he snatch you away, and there be none to deliver you.22 'Think it out, you who forget God, or I wil tear you apart without hope of a rescuer.
The sacrifice of praise shall glorify me: and there is the way by which I will shew him the salvation of God.23 Honour to me is a sacrifice of thanksgiving; to the upright I wil show God's salvation.'
