υιε εαν εγγυηση σον φιλον παραδωσεις σην χειρα εχθρω | 1 My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, thou hast engaged fast thy hand to a stranger. |
παγις γαρ ισχυρα ανδρι τα ιδια χειλη και αλισκεται χειλεσιν ιδιου στοματος | 2 Thou art ensnared with the words of thy mouth, and caught with thy own words. |
ποιει υιε α εγω σοι εντελλομαι και σωζου ηκεις γαρ εις χειρας κακων δια σον φιλον ιθι μη εκλυομενος παροξυνε δε και τον φιλον σου ον ενεγυησω | 3 Do therefore, my son, what I say, and deliver thyself: because thou art fallen into the hand of thy neighbour. Run about, make haste, stir up thy friend: |
μη δως υπνον σοις ομμασιν μηδε επινυσταξης σοις βλεφαροις | 4 Give not sleep to thy eyes, neither let thy eyelids slumber. |
ινα σωζη ωσπερ δορκας εκ βροχων και ωσπερ ορνεον εκ παγιδος | 5 Deliver thyself as a doe from the hand, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler. |
ιθι προς τον μυρμηκα ω οκνηρε και ζηλωσον ιδων τας οδους αυτου και γενου εκεινου σοφωτερος | 6 Go to the ant, O sluggard, and consider her ways, and learn wisdom: |
εκεινω γαρ γεωργιου μη υπαρχοντος μηδε τον αναγκαζοντα εχων μηδε υπο δεσποτην ων | 7 Which, although she hath no guide, nor master, nor captain, |
ετοιμαζεται θερους την τροφην πολλην τε εν τω αμητω ποιειται την παραθεσιν [8α] η πορευθητι προς την μελισσαν και μαθε ως εργατις εστιν την τε εργασιαν ως σεμνην ποιειται [8β] ης τους πονους βασιλεις και ιδιωται προς υγιειαν προσφερονται ποθεινη δε εστιν πασιν και επιδοξος [8χ] καιπερ ουσα τη ρωμη ασθενης την σοφιαν τιμησασα προηχθη | 8 Provideth her meat for herself in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. |
εως τινος οκνηρε κατακεισαι ποτε δε εξ υπνου εγερθηση | 9 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou rise out of thy sleep? |
ολιγον μεν υπνοις ολιγον δε καθησαι μικρον δε νυσταζεις ολιγον δε εναγκαλιζη χερσιν στηθη | 10 Thou wilt sleep a little, thou wilt slumber a little, thou wilt fold thy hands a little to sleep: |
ειτ' εμπαραγινεται σοι ωσπερ κακος οδοιπορος η πενια και η ενδεια ωσπερ αγαθος δρομευς [11α] εαν δε αοκνος ης ηξει ωσπερ πηγη ο αμητος σου η δε ενδεια ωσπερ κακος δρομευς απαυτομολησει | 11 And want shall come upon thee, as a traveller, and poverty as a man armed. But if thou be diligent, thy harvest shall come as a fountain, and want shall flee far from thee. |
ανηρ αφρων και παρανομος πορευεται οδους ουκ αγαθας | 12 A man that is an apostate, an unprofitable man, walketh with a perverse mouth, |
ο δ' αυτος εννευει οφθαλμω σημαινει δε ποδι διδασκει δε εννευμασιν δακτυλων | 13 He winketh with the eyes, presseth with the foot, speaketh with the finger. |
διεστραμμενη δε καρδια τεκταινεται κακα εν παντι καιρω ο τοιουτος ταραχας συνιστησιν πολει | 14 With a wicked heart he deviseth evil, and at all times he soweth discord. |
δια τουτο εξαπινης ερχεται η απωλεια αυτου διακοπη και συντριβη ανιατος | 15 To such a one his destruction shall presently come, and he shall suddenly be destroyed, and shall no longer have any remedy. |
οτι χαιρει πασιν οις μισει ο κυριος συντριβεται δε δι' ακαθαρσιαν ψυχης | 16 Six things there are, which the Lord hateth, and the seventh his soul detesteth: |
οφθαλμος υβριστου γλωσσα αδικος χειρες εκχεουσαι αιμα δικαιου | 17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, |
και καρδια τεκταινομενη λογισμους κακους και ποδες επισπευδοντες κακοποιειν | 18 A heart that deviseth wicked plots, feet that are swift to run into mischief, |
εκκαιει ψευδη μαρτυς αδικος και επιπεμπει κρισεις ανα μεσον αδελφων | 19 A deceitful witness that uttereth lies, and him that soweth discord among brethren. |
υιε φυλασσε νομους πατρος σου και μη απωση θεσμους μητρος σου | 20 My son, beep the commandments of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother. |
αφαψαι δε αυτους επι ση ψυχη δια παντος και εγκλοιωσαι επι σω τραχηλω | 21 Bind them in thy heart continually, and put them about thy neck. |
ηνικα αν περιπατης επαγου αυτην και μετα σου εστω ως δ' αν καθευδης φυλασσετω σε ινα εγειρομενω συλλαλη σοι | 22 When thou walkest, let them go with thee: when thou sleepest, let them keep thee; and when thou awakest, talk with them. |
οτι λυχνος εντολη νομου και φως και οδος ζωης ελεγχος και παιδεια | 23 Because the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light, and reproofs of instruction are the way of life: |
του διαφυλασσειν σε απο γυναικος υπανδρου και απο διαβολης γλωσσης αλλοτριας | 24 That they may keep thee from the evil woman, and from the flattering tongue of the stranger. |
μη σε νικηση καλλους επιθυμια μηδε αγρευθης σοις οφθαλμοις μηδε συναρπασθης απο των αυτης βλεφαρων | 25 Let not thy heart covet her beauty, be not caught with her winks: |
τιμη γαρ πορνης οση και ενος αρτου γυνη δε ανδρων τιμιας ψυχας αγρευει | 26 For the price of a harlot is scarce one loaf: but the woman catcheth the precious soul of a man. |
αποδησει τις πυρ εν κολπω τα δε ιματια ου κατακαυσει | 27 Can a man hide fire in his bosom, and his garments not burn? |
η περιπατησει τις επ' ανθρακων πυρος τους δε ποδας ου κατακαυσει | 28 Or can he walk upon hot coals, and his feet not be burnt? |
ουτως ο εισελθων προς γυναικα υπανδρον ουκ αθωωθησεται ουδε πας ο απτομενος αυτης | 29 So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife, shall not be clean when he shall touch her. |
ου θαυμαστον εαν αλω τις κλεπτων κλεπτει γαρ ινα εμπληση την ψυχην πεινων | 30 The fault is not so great when a man hath stolen: for he stealeth to fill his hungry soul: |
εαν δε αλω αποτεισει επταπλασια και παντα τα υπαρχοντα αυτου δους ρυσεται εαυτον | 31 And if he be taken he shall restore sevenfold, and shall give up all the substance of his house. |
ο δε μοιχος δι' ενδειαν φρενων απωλειαν τη ψυχη αυτου περιποιειται | 32 But he that is an adulterer, for the folly of his heart shall destroy his own soul: |
οδυνας τε και ατιμιας υποφερει το δε ονειδος αυτου ουκ εξαλειφθησεται εις τον αιωνα | 33 He gathereth to himself shame and dishonour, and his reproach shall not be blotted out: |
μεστος γαρ ζηλου θυμος ανδρος αυτης ου φεισεται εν ημερα κρισεως | 34 Because the jealousy and rage of the husband will not spare in the day of revenge, |
ουκ ανταλλαξεται ουδενος λυτρου την εχθραν ουδε μη διαλυθη πολλων δωρων | 35 Nor will he yield to any man's prayers, nor will he accept for satisfaction ever so many gifts. |
