1 Il y avait à Césarée un homme du nom de Corneille, centurion de la cohorte Italique.	1 Now there was a certain man in Caesarea, named Cornelius, a centurion of the cohort which is called Italian,
2 Pieux et craignant Dieu, ainsi que toute sa maison, il faisait de larges aumônes au peuple juif et priaitDieu sans cesse.	2 a devout man, fearing God with all his house, giving many alms to the people, and praying to God continually.
3 Il eut une vision. Vers la neuvième heure du jour, l'Ange de Dieu - il le voyait clairement - entraitchez lui et l'appelait: "Corneille!"	3 This man saw in a vision clearly, at about the ninth hour of the day, the Angel of God entering to him and saying to him: “Cornelius!”
4 Il le regarda et fut pris de frayeur. "Qu'y a-t-il, Seigneur?" Demanda-t-il. - "Tes prières et tesaumônes, lui répondit l'ange, sont montées devant Dieu, et il s'est souvenu de toi.	4 And he, gazing at him, was seized by fear, and he said, “What is it, lord?” And he said to him: “Your prayers and your almsgiving have ascended as a memorial in the sight of God.
5 Maintenant donc, envoie des hommes à Joppé et fais venir Simon, surnommé Pierre.	5 And now, send men to Joppa and summon a certain Simon, who is surnamed Peter.
6 Il loge chez un certain Simon, un corroyeur, dont la maison se trouve au bord de la mer."	6 This man is a guest with a certain Simon, a tanner, whose house is beside the sea. He will tell you what you must do.”
7 Quand l'ange qui lui parlait fut parti, Corneille appela deux de ses domestiques ainsi qu'un soldatpieux, de ceux qui lui étaient attachés,	7 And when the Angel who was speaking to him had departed, he called, out of those who were subject to him, two of his household servants and a soldier who feared the Lord.
8 et après leur avoir tout expliqué, il les envoya à Joppé.	8 And when he had explained everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.
9 Le lendemain, tandis qu'ils faisaient route et approchaient de la ville, Pierre monta sur la terrasse,vers la sixième heure, pour prier.	9 Then, on the following day, while they were making the journey and approaching the city, Peter ascended to the upper rooms, so that he might pray, at about the sixth hour.
10 Il sentit la faim et voulut prendre quelque chose. Or, pendant qu'on lui préparait à manger, il tombaen extase.	10 And since he was hungry, he wanted to enjoy some food. Then, as they were preparing it, an ecstasy of mind fell over him.
11 Il voit le ciel ouvert et un objet, semblable à une grande nappe nouée aux quatre coins, endescendre vers la terre.	11 And he saw heaven opened, and a certain container descending, as if a great linen sheet were let down, by its four corners, from heaven to earth,
12 Et dedans il y avait tous les quadrupèdes et les reptiles, et tous les oiseaux du ciel.	12 on which were all four-footed beasts, and the crawling things of the earth and the flying things of the air.
13 Une voix lui dit alors: "Allons, Pierre, immole et mange."	13 And a voice came to him: “Rise up, Peter! Kill and eat.”
14 Mais Pierre répondit: "Oh non! Seigneur, car je n'ai jamais rien mangé de souillé ni d'impur!"	14 But Peter said: “Far be it from me, lord. For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.”
15 De nouveau, une seconde fois, la voix lui parle: "Ce que Dieu a purifié, toi, ne le dis pas souillé."	15 And the voice, again a second time to him: “What God has purified, you shall not call common.”
16 Cela se répéta par trois fois, et aussitôt l'objet fut remporté au ciel.	16 Now this was done three times. And immediately the container was taken up to heaven.
17 Tout perplexe, Pierre était à se demander en lui-même ce que pouvait bien signifier la vision qu'ilvenait d'avoir, quand justement les hommes envoyés par Corneille, s'étant enquis de la maison de Simon, seprésentèrent au portail.	17 Now while Peter was still hesitant within himself as to what the vision, which he had seen, might mean, behold, the men who had been sent from Cornelius stood at the gate, inquiring about Simon’s house.
18 Ils appelèrent et s'informèrent si c'était bien là que logeait Simon surnommé Pierre.	18 And when they had called out, they asked if Simon, who is surnamed Peter, was a guest in that place.
19 Comme Pierre était toujours à réfléchir sur sa vision, l'Esprit lui dit: "Voilà des hommes qui techerchent.	19 Then, as Peter was thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men seek you.
20 Va donc, descends et pars avec eux sans hésiter, car c'est moi qui les ai envoyés."	20 And so, rise up, descend, and go with them, doubting nothing. For I have sent them.”
21 Pierre descendit auprès de ces hommes et leur dit: "Me voici. Je suis celui que vous cherchez. Quelest le motif qui vous amène?"	21 Then Peter, descending to the men, said: “Behold, I am the one whom you seek. What is the reason for which you have arrived?”
22 Ils répondirent: "Le centurion Corneille, homme juste et craignant Dieu, à qui toute la nation juiverend bon témoignage, a reçu d'un ange saint l'avis de te faire venir chez lui et d'entendre les paroles que tu as àdire."	22 And they said: “Cornelius, a centurion, a just and God-fearing man, who has good testimony from the entire nation of the Jews, received a message from a holy Angel to summon you to his house and to listen to words from you.”
23 Pierre les fit alors entrer et leur donna l'hospitalité. Le lendemain, il se mit en route et partit aveceux; quelques-uns des frères de Joppé l'accompagnèrent.	23 Therefore, leading them in, he received them as guests. Then, on following the day, rising up, he set out with them. And some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him.
24 Il entra dans Césarée le jour suivant. Corneille les attendait et avait réuni ses parents et ses amisintimes.	24 And on the next day, he entered Caesarea. And truly, Cornelius was waiting for them, having called together his family and closest friends.
25 Au moment où Pierre entrait, Corneille vint à sa rencontre et, tombant à ses pieds, se prosterna.	25 And it happened that, when Peter had entered, Cornelius went to meet him. And falling before his feet, he reverenced.
26 Mais Pierre le releva en disant: "Relève-toi. Je ne suis qu'un homme, moi aussi."	26 Yet truly, Peter, lifting him up, said: “Rise up, for I also am only a man.”
27 Et tout en s'entretenant avec lui, il entra. Il trouve alors les gens qui s'étaient réunis en grandnombre,	27 And speaking with him, he entered, and he found many who had gathered together.
28 et il leur dit: "Vous le savez, il est absolument interdit à un Juif de frayer avec un étranger oud'entrer chez lui. Mais Dieu vient de me montrer, à moi, qu'il ne faut appeler aucun homme souillé ou impur.	28 And he said to them: “You know how abominable it would be for a Jewish man to be joined with, or to be added to, a foreign people. But God has revealed to me to call no man common or unclean.
29 Aussi n'ai-je fait aucune difficulté pour me rendre à votre appel. Je vous le demande donc, pourquelle raison m'avez-vous fait venir?"	29 Because of this and without doubt, I came when summoned. Therefore, I ask you, for what reason have you summoned me?”
30 Corneille répondit: "Il y a maintenant trois jours, j'étais en prière chez moi à la neuvième heure etvoici qu'un homme surgit devant moi, en vêtements resplendissants.	30 And Cornelius said: “It is now the fourth day, to this very hour, since I was praying in my house at the ninth hour, and behold, a man stood before me in a white vestment, and he said:
31 Il me dit: Corneille, ta prière a été exaucée, et de tes aumônes on s'est souvenu auprès de Dieu.	31 ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your almsgiving has been remembered in the sight of God.
32 Envoie donc quérir à Joppé Simon, surnommé Pierre. Il loge dans la maison du corroyeur Simon,au bord de la mer.	32 Therefore, send to Joppa and summon Simon, who is surnamed Peter. This man is a guest in the house of Simon, a tanner, near the sea.’
33 Aussitôt je t'ai donc fait chercher, et toi, tu as bien fait de venir. Nous voici donc tous devant toipour entendre ce qui t'a été prescrit par Dieu."	33 And so, I promptly sent for you. And you have done well in coming here. Therefore, all of us are now present in your sight to hear all the things that were taught to you by the Lord.”
34 Alors Pierre prit la parole et dit: "Je constate en vérité que Dieu ne fait pas acception des personnes,	34 Then, Peter, opening his mouth, said: “I have concluded in truth that God is not a respecter of persons.
35 mais qu'en toute nation celui qui le craint et pratique la justice lui est agréable.	35 But within every nation, whoever fears him and works justice is acceptable to him.
36 "Il a envoyé sa parole aux Israélites, leur annonçant la bonne nouvelle de la paix par Jésus Christ:c'est lui le Seigneur de tous.	36 God sent the Word to the sons of Israel, announcing the peace through Jesus Christ, for he is the Lord of all.
37 Vous savez ce qui s'est passé dans toute la Judée: Jésus de Nazareth, ses débuts en Galilée, après lebaptême proclamé par Jean;	37 You know that the Word has been made known throughout all Judea. For beginning from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached,
38 comment Dieu l'a oint de l'Esprit Saint et de puissance, lui qui a passé en faisant le bien et enguérissant tous ceux qui étaient tombés au pouvoir du diable; car Dieu était avec lui.	38 Jesus of Nazareth, whom God anointed with the Holy Spirit and with power, traveled around doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil. For God was with him.
39 Et nous, nous sommes témoins de tout ce qu'il a fait dans le pays des Juifs et à Jérusalem. Lui qu'ilssont allés jusqu'à faire mourir en le suspendant au gibet,	39 And we are witnesses of all that he did in the region of Judea and in Jerusalem, he whom they killed by hanging him on a tree.
40 Dieu l'a ressuscité le troisième jour et lui a donné de se manifester,	40 God raised him up on the third day and permitted him to be made manifest,
41 non à tout le peuple, mais aux témoins que Dieu avait choisis d'avance, à nous qui avons mangé etbu avec lui après sa résurrection d'entre les morts;	41 not to all the people, but to the witnesses preordained by God, to those of us who ate and drank with him after he rose again from the dead.
42 et il nous a enjoint de proclamer au Peuple et d'attester qu'il est, lui, le juge établi par Dieu pour lesvivants et les morts.	42 And he instructed us to preach to the people, and to testify that he is the One who was appointed by God to be the judge of the living and of the dead.
43 C'est de lui que tous les prophètes rendent ce témoignage que quiconque croit en lui recevra, parson nom, la rémission de ses péchés."	43 To him all the Prophets offer testimony that through his name all who believe in him receive the remission of sins.”
44 Pierre parlait encore quand l'Esprit Saint tomba sur tous ceux qui écoutaient la parole.	44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell over all of those who were listening to the Word.
45 Et tous les croyants circoncis qui étaient venus avec Pierre furent stupéfaits de voir que le don duSaint Esprit avait été répandu aussi sur les païens.	45 And the faithful of the circumcision, who had arrived with Peter, were astonished that the grace of the Holy Spirit was also poured out upon the Gentiles.
46 Ils les entendaient en effet parler en langues et magnifier Dieu. Alors Pierre déclara:	46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and magnifying God.
47 "Peut-on refuser l'eau du baptême à ceux qui ont reçu l'Esprit Saint aussi bien que nous?"	47 Then Peter responded, “How could anyone prohibit water, so that those who have received the Holy Spirit would not be baptized, just as we also have been?”
48 Et il ordonna de les baptiser au nom de Jésus Christ. Alors ils le prièrent de rester quelques joursavec eux.	48 And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Then they begged him to remain with them for some days.
