1 Yahvé parla à Moïse et dit:	1 And the people set out from Hazeroth, and they pitched their tents in the desert of Paran.
2 "Envoie des hommes, un par tribu, pour reconnaître le pays de Canaan, que je donne auxIsraélites. Vous enverrez tous leurs princes."	2 And there, the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
3 Sur l'ordre de Yahvé, Moïse les envoya du désert de Parân. Ces hommes étaient tous chefs desIsraélites.	3 “Send men, who may examine the land of Canaan, which I will give to the sons of Israel, one from the rulers of each tribe.”
4 En voici les noms: Pour la tribu de Ruben, Shammua, fils de Zakkur;	4 Moses did what the Lord had commanded, sending, from the desert of Paran, leading men, whose names are these:
5 pour la tribu de Siméon, Shaphat, fils de Hori;	5 from the tribe of Ruben, Shammua the son of Zaccur;
6 pour la tribu de Juda, Caleb, fils de Yephunné;	6 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori;
7 pour la tribu d'Issachar, Yigéal, fils de Yoseph;	7 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh;
8 pour la tribu d'Ephraïm, Hoshéa, fils de Nûn;	8 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph;
9 pour la tribu de Benjamin, Palti, fils de Raphu;	9 from the tribe of Ephraim, Hosea the son of Nun;
10 pour la tribu de Zabulon, Gaddiel, fils de Sodi;	10 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu;
11 pour la tribu de Joseph, pour la tribu de Manassé, Gaddi, fils de Susi;	11 from the tribe of Zebulon, Gaddiel the son of Sodi;
12 pour la tribu de Dan, Ammiel, fils de Gemalli;	12 from the tribe of Joseph, of the scepter of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi;
13 pour la tribu d'Asher, Setur, fils de Mikaël;	13 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli;
14 pour la tribu de Nephtali, Nahbi, fils de Vaphsi;	14 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael;
15 pour la tribu de Gad, Géuel, fils de Maki.	15 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi;
16 Tels sont les noms des hommes que Moïse envoya reconnaître le pays. Puis Moïse donna àHoshéa, fils de Nûn, le nom de Josué.	16 from the tribe of Gad, Guel the son of Machi.
17 Moïse les envoya reconnaître le pays de Canaan: "Montez au Négeb, montez ensuite dans lamontagne.	17 These are the names of the men, whom Moses sent to examine the land. And he called Hosea, the son of Nun, Joshua.
18 Voyez ce qu'est le pays; ce qu'est le peuple qui l'habite, fort ou faible, clairsemé ou nombreux;	18 And so, Moses sent them to examine the land of Canaan, and he said to them: “Ascend by the south side. And when you arrive at the mountains,
19 ce qu'est le pays où il habite, bon ou mauvais; ce que sont les villes où il habite, camps ou villesfortifiées;	19 consider the land, as to what kind it may be, and the people, who are its inhabitants, whether they may be strong or weak, whether they may be few in number or many,
20 ce qu'est le pays, fertile ou pauvre, boisé ou non. Ayez bon courage. Prenez des produits dupays." C'était l'époque des premiers raisins.	20 and the land itself, whether it is good or bad, what kind of cities, walled or without walls,
21 Ils montèrent reconnaître le pays, depuis le désert de Cîn jusqu'à Rehob, l'Entrée de Hamat.	21 the soil, rich or barren, forested or without trees. Be strong, and bring us some of the fruits of the land.” Now it was the time when the first ripe grapes were ready to be eaten.
22 Ils montèrent par le Négeb et parvinrent à Hébron, où se trouvaient Ahimân, Sheshaï et Talmaï,les Anaqim. (Hébron avait été fondée sept ans avant Tanis d'Egypte.)	22 And when they had ascended, they explored the land from the desert of Sin, all the way to Rehob, as one enters into Hamath.
23 Ils parvinrent au val d'Eshkol; ils y coupèrent un sarment et une grappe de raisin qu'ilsemportèrent à deux, sur une perche, ainsi que des grenades et des figues.	23 And they ascended by the south side. And they arrived at Hebron, where there were Ahiman and Shishai and Talmai, the sons of Anak. For Hebron was founded seven years before Tanis, the city of Egypt.
24 On appela ce lieu val d'Eshkol, à cause de la grappe qu'y avaient coupée les Israélites.	24 And continuing on as far as the Torrent of the Cluster of Grapes, they cut off a vine with its grapes, which two men carried on a board. Likewise, they took from the pomegranates and the figs of that place,
25 Au bout de 40 jours, ils revinrent de cette reconnaissance du pays.	25 which was called Nehel Eshcol, that is, the Torrent of the Cluster of Grapes, because the sons of Israel had carried a cluster of grapes from there.
26 Ils allèrent trouver Moïse, Aaron, et toute la communauté d'Israël, dans le désert de Parân, àCadès. Ils leur firent leur rapport, ainsi qu'à toute la communauté, et leur montrèrent les produits du pays.	26 And those exploring the land returned after forty days, having circulated through the entire region.
27 Ils leur firent ce récit: "Nous sommes allés dans le pays où tu nous as envoyés. En vérité, ilruisselle de lait et de miel; en voici les produits.	27 And they went to Moses and Aaron, and to the entire assembly of the sons of Israel in the desert of Paran, which is in Kadesh. And speaking to them, and to the entire multitude, they showed them the fruits of the land.
28 Toutefois, le peuple qui l'habite est puissant; les villes sont fortifiées, très grandes; nous y avonsmême vu des descendants d'Anaq.	28 And they explained, saying: “We went into the land, to which you sent us, which, it is true, flows with milk and honey, as one can know by these fruits.
29 Les Amalécites occupent la région du Négeb; les Hittites, les Amorites et les Jébuséens, lamontagne; les Cananéens, le bord de la mer et les rives du Jourdain."	29 But it has very strong occupants, and the cities are great and also walled. We saw the race of Anak there.
30 Caleb harangua le peuple assemblé près de Moïse: "Il faut marcher, disait-il, et conquérir cepays: nous en sommes capables."	30 Amalek lives in the south. The Hethite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite live in the mountains. And truly, the Canaanite stays near the sea and around the streams of the Jordan.”
31 Mais les hommes qui l'avaient accompagné répondirent: "Nous ne pouvons pas marcher contrece peuple, car il est plus fort que nous."	31 During these events, Caleb, to restrain the murmuring of the people who rose up against Moses, said, “Let us ascend and possess the land, for we will be able to obtain it.”
32 Et ils se mirent à décrier devant les Israélites le pays qu'ils avaient été reconnaître: "Le pays quenous sommes allés reconnaître est un pays qui dévore ses habitants. Tous ceux que nous y avons vus sont deshommes de haute taille.	32 Yet truly, the others, who had been with him, were saying, “By no means are we able to ascend to this people, because they are stronger than we are.”
33 Nous y avons aussi vu des géants (les fils d'Anaq, descendance des Géants). Nous, nous faisionsl'effet de sauterelles, et c'est bien aussi l'effet que nous leur faisions."	33 And before the sons of Israel they disparaged the land, which they had inspected, saying: “The land, which we viewed, devours its inhabitants. The people, upon whom we gazed, were of lofty stature.
	34 There, we saw some monsters among the sons of Anak, of the race of giants; by comparison with them, we seemed like locusts.”
