1 Yahvé parla à Moïse et dit:	1 The LORD said to Moses,
2 "Envoie des hommes, un par tribu, pour reconnaître le pays de Canaan, que je donne auxIsraélites. Vous enverrez tous leurs princes."	2 "Send men to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. You shall send one man from each ancestral tribe, all of them princes."
3 Sur l'ordre de Yahvé, Moïse les envoya du désert de Parân. Ces hommes étaient tous chefs desIsraélites.	3 So Moses dispatched them from the desert of Paran, as the LORD had ordered. All of them were leaders among the Israelites;
4 En voici les noms: Pour la tribu de Ruben, Shammua, fils de Zakkur;	4 by name they were: Shammua, son of Zaccur, of the tribe of Reuben;
5 pour la tribu de Siméon, Shaphat, fils de Hori;	5 Shaphat, son of Hori, of the tribe of Simeon;
6 pour la tribu de Juda, Caleb, fils de Yephunné;	6 Caleb, son of Jephunneh, of the tribe of Judah;
7 pour la tribu d'Issachar, Yigéal, fils de Yoseph;	7 Igal (son of Joseph), of the tribe of Issachar;
8 pour la tribu d'Ephraïm, Hoshéa, fils de Nûn;	8 Hoshea, son of Nun, of the tribe of Ephraim;
9 pour la tribu de Benjamin, Palti, fils de Raphu;	9 Palti, son of Raphu, of the tribe of Benjamin;
10 pour la tribu de Zabulon, Gaddiel, fils de Sodi;	10 Gaddiel, son of Sodi, of the tribe of Zebulun;
11 pour la tribu de Joseph, pour la tribu de Manassé, Gaddi, fils de Susi;	11 Gaddi, son of Susi, of the tribe of Manasseh, for the Josephites, with
12 pour la tribu de Dan, Ammiel, fils de Gemalli;	12 Ammiel, son of Gemalli, of the tribe of Dan;
13 pour la tribu d'Asher, Setur, fils de Mikaël;	13 Sethur, son of Michael, of the tribe of Asher;
14 pour la tribu de Nephtali, Nahbi, fils de Vaphsi;	14 Nahbi, son of Vophsi, of the tribe of Naphtali;
15 pour la tribu de Gad, Géuel, fils de Maki.	15 Geuel, son of Machi, of the tribe of Gad.
16 Tels sont les noms des hommes que Moïse envoya reconnaître le pays. Puis Moïse donna àHoshéa, fils de Nûn, le nom de Josué.	16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent out to reconnoiter the land. But Hoshea, son of Nun, Moses called Joshua.
17 Moïse les envoya reconnaître le pays de Canaan: "Montez au Négeb, montez ensuite dans lamontagne.	17 In sending them to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, Moses said to them, "Go up here in the Negeb, up into the highlands,
18 Voyez ce qu'est le pays; ce qu'est le peuple qui l'habite, fort ou faible, clairsemé ou nombreux;	18 and see what kind of land it is. Are the people living there strong or weak, few or many?
19 ce qu'est le pays où il habite, bon ou mauvais; ce que sont les villes où il habite, camps ou villesfortifiées;	19 Is the country in which they live good or bad? Are the towns in which they dwell open or fortified?
20 ce qu'est le pays, fertile ou pauvre, boisé ou non. Ayez bon courage. Prenez des produits dupays." C'était l'époque des premiers raisins.	20 Is the soil fertile or barren, wooded or clear? And do your best to get some of the fruit of the land." It was then the season for early grapes.
21 Ils montèrent reconnaître le pays, depuis le désert de Cîn jusqu'à Rehob, l'Entrée de Hamat.	21 So they went up and reconnoitered the land from the desert of Zin as far as where Rehob adjoins Labo of Hamath.
22 Ils montèrent par le Négeb et parvinrent à Hébron, où se trouvaient Ahimân, Sheshaï et Talmaï,les Anaqim. (Hébron avait été fondée sept ans avant Tanis d'Egypte.)	22 Going up by way of the Negeb, they reached Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, descendants of the Anakim, were living. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
23 Ils parvinrent au val d'Eshkol; ils y coupèrent un sarment et une grappe de raisin qu'ilsemportèrent à deux, sur une perche, ainsi que des grenades et des figues.	23 They also reached the Wadi Eshcol, where they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes on it, which two of them carried on a pole, as well as some pomegranates and figs.
24 On appela ce lieu val d'Eshkol, à cause de la grappe qu'y avaient coupée les Israélites.	24 It was because of the cluster the Israelites cut there that they called the place Wadi Eshcol.
25 Au bout de 40 jours, ils revinrent de cette reconnaissance du pays.	25 After reconnoitering the land for forty days they returned,
26 Ils allèrent trouver Moïse, Aaron, et toute la communauté d'Israël, dans le désert de Parân, àCadès. Ils leur firent leur rapport, ainsi qu'à toute la communauté, et leur montrèrent les produits du pays.	26 met Moses and Aaron and the whole community of the Israelites in the desert of Paran at Kadesh, made a report to them all, and showed them the fruit of the country.
27 Ils leur firent ce récit: "Nous sommes allés dans le pays où tu nous as envoyés. En vérité, ilruisselle de lait et de miel; en voici les produits.	27 They told Moses: "We went into the land to which you sent us. It does indeed flow with milk and honey, and here is its fruit.
28 Toutefois, le peuple qui l'habite est puissant; les villes sont fortifiées, très grandes; nous y avonsmême vu des descendants d'Anaq.	28 However, the people who are living in the land are fierce, and the towns are fortified and very strong. Besides, we saw descendants of the Anakim there.
29 Les Amalécites occupent la région du Négeb; les Hittites, les Amorites et les Jébuséens, lamontagne; les Cananéens, le bord de la mer et les rives du Jourdain."	29 Amalekites live in the region of the Negeb; Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites dwell in the highlands, and Canaanites along the seacoast and the banks of the Jordan."
30 Caleb harangua le peuple assemblé près de Moïse: "Il faut marcher, disait-il, et conquérir cepays: nous en sommes capables."	30 Caleb, however, to quiet the people toward Moses, said, "We ought to go up and seize the land, for we can certainly do so."
31 Mais les hommes qui l'avaient accompagné répondirent: "Nous ne pouvons pas marcher contrece peuple, car il est plus fort que nous."	31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We cannot attack these people; they are too strong for us."
32 Et ils se mirent à décrier devant les Israélites le pays qu'ils avaient été reconnaître: "Le pays quenous sommes allés reconnaître est un pays qui dévore ses habitants. Tous ceux que nous y avons vus sont deshommes de haute taille.	32 So they spread discouraging reports among the Israelites about the land they had scouted, saying, "The land that we explored is a country that consumes its inhabitants. And all the people we saw there are huge men,
33 Nous y avons aussi vu des géants (les fils d'Anaq, descendance des Géants). Nous, nous faisionsl'effet de sauterelles, et c'est bien aussi l'effet que nous leur faisions."	33 veritable giants (the Anakim were a race of giants); we felt like mere grasshoppers, and so we must have seemed to them."
