JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Cependant Démétrius, ayant appris que Nikanor avait succombé avec son armée dans lecombat, envoya de nouveau au pays de Juda Bacchidès et Alkime, à la tête de l'aile droite.	1 Demetrius, hearing that Nicanor and his army had fal en in battle, sent Bacchides and Alcimus asecond time into Judaea, and with them the right wing of his army.
2 Ceux-ci prirent le chemin de la Galilée et assiégèrent Mésaloth au territoire d'Arbèles et, s'enétant emparés, ils y tuèrent un grand nombre d'habitants.	2 They took the road to Galilee and besieged Mesaloth in Arbela, and captured it, putting many people todeath.
3 Le premier mois de l'année 152, ils dressèrent leur camp devant Jérusalem,	3 In the first month of the year 152, they encamped outside Jerusalem;
4 puis ils partirent et allèrent à Béerzeth avec 20.000 fantassins et 2.000 cavaliers.	4 they then moved on, making their way to Beer-Zaith with twenty thousand foot and two thousand horse.
5 Judas avait établi son camp à Eléasa, ayant avec lui 3.000 guerriers d'élite.	5 Judas lay in camp at Elasa, with three thousand picked men.
6 A la vue du grand nombre des ennemis, ils furent pris de frayeur et beaucoup s'échappèrentdu camp, où il ne resta plus que 800 hommes.	6 When they saw the huge size of the enemy forces they were terrified, and many slipped out of thecamp, until no more than eight hundred of the force were left.
7 Judas vit que son armée s'était dérobée alors que le combat le pressait; son coeur en fut briséparce qu'il n'avait plus le temps de rassembler les siens.	7 With battle now inevitable, Judas realised that his army had melted away; he was aghast, for he had notime to ral y them.
8 Dans son désarroi, il dit cependant à ceux qui étaient restés: "Debout! marchons contre nosadversaires si par hasard nous pouvons les combattre."	8 Yet, dismayed as he was, he said to those who were left, 'Up! Let us face the enemy; we may yet have the strength to fight them.'
9 Eux l'en dissuadaient: "Nous ne pouvons, disaient-ils, rien d'autre pour le moment que sauvernotre vie, quitte à revenir avec nos frères pour reprendre la lutte. Nous sommes vraiment trop peu."	9 His men tried to dissuade him, declaring, 'We have no strength for anything but to escape with our livesthis time; then we can come back with our brothers to fight them; by ourselves we are too few.'
10 Judas répliqua: "Loin de moi d'agir ainsi et de fuir devant eux. Si notre heure est arrivée,mourons bravement pour nos frères et ne laissons rien à reprendre à notre gloire."	10 Judas retorted, 'That I should do such a thing as run away from them! If our time has come, at leastlet us die like men for our countrymen, and leave nothing to tarnish our reputation.'
11 L'armée sortit du camp et s'arrêta face à l'ennemi. La cavalerie fut partagée en deuxescadrons, les frondeurs et les archers marchaient sur le front de l'armée ainsi que les troupes de choc, tous lesvaillants.	11 The army marched out of camp and drew up, facing the enemy. The cavalry was drawn up in twosquadrons; the slingers and archers marched in the van of the army, and al the best fighters were put in thefront rank;
12 Bacchidès se tenait à l'aile droite, la phalange s'avança des deux côtés au son de latrompette. Ceux du côté de Judas sonnèrent aussi la trompette	12 Bacchides was on the right wing. The phalanx advanced from between the two squadrons, soundingthe trumpets; the men on Judas' side also blew their trumpets,
13 et la terre fut ébranlée par la clameur des armées. Le combat s'engagea le matin et durajusqu'au soir.	13 and the earth shook with the noise of the armies. The engagement lasted from morning until evening.
14 Judas s'aperçut que Bacchidès et le fort de son armée se trouvaient à droite: autour de lui segroupèrent tous les hommes de coeur,	14 Judas saw that Bacchides and the main strength of his army lay on the right; al the stout-heartedral ied to him,
15 l'aile droite fut écrasée par eux et ils la poursuivirent jusqu'aux monts Azâra.	15 and they crushed the right wing, pursuing them as far as the Azara Hil s.
16 Cependant, voyant que l'aile droite était enfoncée, les Syriens de l'aile gauche se rabattirentsur les talons de Judas et de ses compagnons, les prenant à revers.	16 But when the Syrians on the left wing saw that the right had been broken, they turned and followedhot on the heels of Judas and his men to take them in the rear.
17 La lutte devint acharnée et, de part et d'autre, un grand nombre tombèrent frappés.	17 The fight became desperate, and there were many casualties on both sides.
18 Judas succomba lui aussi, et le reste prit la fuite.	18 Judas himself fel , and the remnant fled.
19 Jonathan et Simon enlevèrent leur frère Judas et l'ensevelirent au tombeau de ses pères àModîn.	19 Jonathan and Simon took up their brother Judas and buried him in his ancestral tomb at Modein.
20 Tout Israël le pleura et mena sur lui un grand deuil, redisant plusieurs jours cettelamentation:	20 Al Israel wept and mourned him deeply and for many days they repeated this dirge.
21 "Comment est-il tombé, le héros qui sauvait Israël?"	21 'What a downfall for the strong man, the man who kept Israel safe!'
22 Le reste des actions de Judas, de ses guerres, des exploits qu'il accomplit et de ses titres degloire n'a pas été écrit; il y en avait trop.	22 The other deeds of Judas, the battles he fought, the exploits he performed, and all his titles togreatness have not been recorded; but they were very many.
23 Après la mort de Judas, les sans-loi se montrèrent sur tout le territoire d'Israël et tous lesartisans d'iniquité reparurent.	23 After the death of Judas, the renegades came out of hiding throughout Israel and al the evil-doersreappeared.
24 Comme en ces jours-là sévissait une très grande disette, le pays passa de leur côté.	24 At that time there was a severe famine, and the country went over to their side.
25 Bacchidès choisit à dessein les hommes impies pour administrer le pays.	25 Bacchides deliberately chose the enemies of religion to administer the country.
26 Ceux-ci exerçaient sur les amis de Judas perquisitions et enquêtes, puis les faisaientcomparaître devant Bacchidès qui les punissait et les tournait en dérision.	26 These traced and searched out the friends of Judas and brought them before Bacchides, who il -treated and mocked them.
27 Il sévit alors en Israël une oppression telle qu'il ne s'en était pas produite de pareille depuisle jour où l'on n'y avait plus vu de prophète.	27 A terrible oppression began in Israel; there had been nothing like it since the disappearance ofprophecy among them.
28 Alors tous les amis de Judas se rassemblèrent et dirent à Jonathan:	28 The friends of Judas then al united in saying to Jonathan,
29 "Depuis que ton frère Judas est mort, il ne se trouve plus d'homme semblable à lui pours'opposer à nos ennemis, les Bacchidès et quiconque hait notre nation.	29 'Since your brother Judas died, there has been no one like him to head the resistance against ourenemies, people like Bacchides and others who hate our nation.
30 Nous te choisissons donc aujourd'hui même pour être à sa place notre chef et notre guidedans la lutte que nous avons entreprise."	30 Accordingly, we have today chosen you to take his place as our ruler and leader and to fight ourcampaigns.'
31 C'est à ce moment-là que Jonathan prit le commandement et la succession de son frèreJudas.	31 Whereupon, Jonathan took command, in succession to his brother Judas.
32 Bacchidès, l'ayant appris, cherchait à faire périr Jonathan.	32 Bacchides, when he heard the news, made plans to kil Jonathan.
33 Celui-ci, en ayant eu connaissance, ainsi que son frère Simon et tous ceux quil'accompagnaient s'enfuirent au désert de Thékoé et campèrent près de l'eau de la citerne Asphar.	33 But this became known to Jonathan, his brother Simon and al his supporters, and they took refuge inthe desert of Tekoa, camping by the water-supply at Asphar storage-well.
34 (Bacchidès le sut le jour du sabbat et vint lui aussi avec toute son armée au-delà duJourdain.)	34 (Bacchides came to know of this on the Sabbath day, and he too crossed the Jordan with his entirearmy.)
35 Jonathan envoya son frère qui commandait à la troupe demander à ses amis les Nabatéensde mettre en dépôt chez eux ses bagages qui étaient considérables.	35 Jonathan sent his brother, who was one of his commanders, to ask his friends the Nabataeans tostore their considerable baggage for them.
36 Mais les fils de Amraï, ceux de Médaba, sortirent, s'emparèrent de Jean et de tout ce qu'ilavait et partirent avec leur butin.	36 The sons of Amrai, however, those of Medeba, intercepted them, captured John and everything hehad and made off with their prize.
37 Après ces événements, on annonça à Jonathan et à Simon, son frère, que les fils de Amraïcélébraient une grande noce et amenaient en grande pompe depuis Nabatha la fiancée, fille d'un des grandspersonnages de Canaan.	37 Later, Jonathan and his brother Simon were told that the sons of Amrai were celebrating an importantwedding, and were escorting the bride, a daughter of one of the great notables of Canaan, from Nabata with alarge retinue.
38 Ils se souvinrent alors de la fin sanglante de leur frère Jean, et montèrent se cacher sousl'abri de la montagne.	38 Remembering the bloody end of their brother John, they went up and hid under cover of the mountain.
39 En levant les yeux ils virent paraître, au milieu d'un bruit confus, un nombreux équipage,puis le fiancé, ses amis et ses frères s'avançant au-devant du cortège avec des tambourins, des musiques et unriche équipement guerrier.	39 As they were keeping watch, a noisy procession came into sight with a great deal of baggage, and thebridegroom, with his groomsmen and his family, came out to meet it with tambourines and a band, and rich,warlike display.
40 De leur embuscade les Juifs se jetèrent sur eux et les massacrèrent, faisant de nombreusesvictimes, tandis que les survivants fuyaient vers la montagne, et que toutes leurs dépouilles étaient emportées.	40 The Jews rushed down on them from their ambush and killed them, inflicting heavy casualties; thesurvivors escaped to the mountain, leaving their entire baggage train to be captured.
41 Ainsi les noces se changèrent en deuil et les accents musicaux en lamentations.	41 Thus, the wedding was turned into mourning and the music of their band into lamentation.
42 Ayant vengé de la sorte le sang de leur frère, ils revinrent aux rives fangeuses du Jourdain.	42 Having in this way avenged in ful the blood of their brother, they returned to the marshes of theJordan.
43 Bacchidès, l'ayant appris, vint le jour du sabbat jusqu'aux berges du Jourdain avec unenombreuse armée.	43 As soon as Bacchides heard this, he came on the Sabbath day with a considerable force to the steepbanks of the Jordan.
44 Alors Jonathan dit à ses gens: "Debout! Luttons pour nos vies, car aujourd'hui ce n'est pascomme hier et avant-hier.	44 Jonathan said to his men, 'Up! Let us fight for our lives, for today it is not as in the old days.
45 Voici que nous avons le combat en face de nous et derrière nous, ici l'eau du Jourdain, là lemarais et le fourré, il n'y a pas où battre en retraite.	45 You can see, we shall have to fight on our front and to our rear; we have the waters of the Jordan onone side, the marsh and scrub on the other, and we have no line of withdrawal.
46 Maintenant donc, criez vers le Ciel afin d'échapper au pouvoir de vos ennemis."	46 This is the moment to call on Heaven, to deliver you from the clutches of your enemies.'
47 Le combat s'engagea et Jonathan étendit la main pour frapper Bacchidès, mais ce dernier luiéchappa en se rejetant en arrière.	47 The engagement was begun by Jonathan, who aimed a blow at Bacchides, but the Syrian disengagedhimself and withdrew,
48 Alors Jonathan et ses compagnons sautèrent dans le Jourdain et atteignirent l'autre bord à lanage, mais les adversaires ne franchirent pas le fleuve à leur suite.	48 whereupon Jonathan and his men leapt into the Jordan and swam to the other bank; the enemy didnot, however, cross the Jordan in pursuit.
49 En cette journée, environ mille hommes restèrent sur le terrain du côté de Bacchidès.	49 That day, Bacchides lost about a thousand men.
50 De retour à Jérusalem, Bacchidès se mit à construire des villes fortes en Judée: la forteressequi est à Jéricho, Emmaüs, Bethorôn, Béthel, Tamnatha, Pharathôn et Tephôn, avec de hautes murailles, desportes et des verrous,	50 Bacchides went back to Jerusalem and began fortifying some of the Judaean towns: the fortresses ofJericho, Emmaus, Beth-Horon, Bethel, Timnath, Pharathon and Tephon, with high wal s and barred gates,
51 laissant en chacune d'elles une garnison pour sévir contre Israël.	51 and stationed a garrison in each of them to harass Israel.
52 Il fortifia la ville de Bethsour, Gazara et la Citadelle; il y plaça des hommes armés et desdépôts de vivres.	52 He also fortified the town of Beth-Zur, Gezer and the Citadel, and placed troops in them with suppliesof provisions.
53 Il prit comme otages les fils des chefs du pays et les fit mettre sous garde dans la Citadellede Jérusalem.	53 He took the sons of the leading men of the country as hostages, and had them placed under guard inthe Citadel of Jerusalem.
54 Et en l'année 153, au deuxième mois, Alkime ordonna d'abattre le mur de la cour intérieuredu sanctuaire; il détruisit les travaux des prophètes, il commença à démolir.	54 In the year 153, in the second month, Alcimus ordered the demolition of the wall of the inner court ofthe sanctuary, destroying the work of the prophets. Alcimus had just begun the demolition
55 En ce temps-là, Alkime eut une attaque et ses entreprises se trouvèrent empêchées. Sabouche s'obstrua et fut paralysée de sorte qu'il lui fut désormais impossible de prononcer une seule parole et dedonner des ordres concernant sa maison.	55 when he suffered a stroke, and his work was interrupted. His mouth became obstructed, and hisparalysis made him incapable of speaking at al or giving directions to his household;
56 Alkime mourut à cette époque au milieu de vives souffrances.	56 it was not long before he died in great agony.
57 Voyant qu'Alkime était mort, Bacchidès revint chez le roi et le pays de Juda fut en reposdurant deux ans.	57 On the death of Alcimus, Bacchides went back to the king, and Judaea was left in peace for twoyears.
58 Tous les sans-loi tinrent conseil: "Voici, disaient-ils, que Jonathan et les siens viventtranquilles en toute confiance; nous ferons donc venir maintenant Bacchidès et il les arrêtera tous en une seulenuit.	58 The renegades then al agreed on a plan. 'Now is the time,' they said, 'while Jonathan and hissupporters are living in peace and are ful of confidence, for us to bring back Bacchides, and he wil arrest the lotof them in one night.'
59 Etant allés le trouver, ils en délibérèrent avec lui.	59 So they went to him and reached an understanding.
60 Bacchidès se mit en route avec une forte armée et écrivit en secret à tous ses alliés de Judéepour leur demander de se saisir de Jonathan et de ses compagnons, mais ils ne le purent, leur dessein ayant étééventé.	60 Bacchides at once set out with a large force, and sent secret instructions to al his allies in Judaea toseize Jonathan and his supporters. But they were unable to do this because their plan became known,
61 Ceux-là, par contre, appréhendèrent parmi les hommes du pays, auteurs de cettescélératesse, une cinquantaine d'individus, et les massacrèrent.	61 and Jonathan and his men arrested some fifty of the men of the country who were ringleaders in theplot, and put them to death.
62 Jonathan et Simon se retirèrent ensuite avec leurs partisans à Bethbassi dans le désert, ilsrelevèrent ce qui était ruiné de cette place et la consolidèrent...	62 Jonathan and Simon then retired with their partisans to Beth-Bassi in the desert; they rebuilt theruinous parts of the place and fortified it.
63 Bacchidès, en ayant eu connaissance, rassembla tous ses gens et fit appel à ses partisans deJudée.	63 When Bacchides heard this, he mustered his whole force and notified his adherents in Judaea.
64 Il vint camper près de Bethbassi, l'attaqua durant de nombreux jours et fit construire desmachines.	64 He then proceeded to lay siege to Beth-Bassi, the fighting was protracted, and he constructed siege-engines.
65 Laissant son frère Simon dans la ville, Jonathan sortit dans la campagne et marcha avec unepoignée de gens.	65 Jonathan, however, leaving his brother Simon in the town, broke out into the countryside with ahandful of men.
66 Il battit Odoméra et ses frères ainsi que les fils de Phasirôn dans leur campement, ces gensse mirent à combattre eux aussi et à monter avec les troupes.	66 He launched a blow at Odomera and his brothers, and at the sons of Phasiron in their encampment;whereupon, these too came into the struggle, joining forces with him.
67 Simon et ses hommes firent une sortie et incendièrent les machines.	67 Simon and his people, meanwhile, made a sortie from the town and set fire to the siege-engines.
68 Ils combattirent Bacchidès qui, écrasé par eux, tomba dans un accablement profond parceque son plan et son attaque n'avaient pas réussi.	68 Taking the offensive against Bacchides, they defeated him. He was greatly disconcerted to find thathis plan and his assault had come to nothing,
69 Il entra en fureur contre les mécréants qui lui avaient conseillé de venir dans le pays, il entua beaucoup et, avec ses gens, il décida de retourner chez lui.	69 and vented his anger on those renegades who had induced him to enter the country, putting many ofthem to death; he then decided to take his own troops home.
70 A cette nouvelle, Jonathan lui envoya des députés pour conclure avec lui la paix et lareddition des prisonniers.	70 Discovering this, Jonathan sent envoys to negotiate peace terms and the release of prisoners withhim.
71 Il accepta et fut fidèle à ses engagements: il lui jura de ne pas chercher à lui faire du maldurant tous les jours de sa vie.	71 Bacchides agreed to this, accepting his proposals and swearing never to seek occasion to harm himfor the rest of his life.
72 Après avoir rendu les prisonniers qu'il avait faits auparavant au pays de Juda, Bacchidès s'enretourna chez lui et ne revint plus sur le territoire des Juifs.	72 Having surrendered to Jonathan those prisoners he had earlier taken in Judaea, he turned about andwithdrew to his own country, and never again came near their frontiers.
73 L'épée se reposa en Israël et Jonathan s'installa à Machmas où il se mit à juger le peuple, etil fit disparaître les impies du milieu d'Israël.	73 The sword no longer hung over Israel, and Jonathan settled in Michmash, where he began to judgethe people and to rid Israel of the godless.
