1 Jonathan, voyant que les circonstances lui étaient favorables, choisit des hommes qu'ilenvoya à Rome pour confirmer et renouveler l'amitié avec les Romains.	1 Now when Jonathan saw that time served him, he chose certain men, and sent them to Rome, for to confirm and renew the friendship that they had with them.
2 Aux Spartiates et en d'autres lieux il envoya des lettres dans le même sens.	2 He sent letters also to the Lacedemonians, and to other places, for the same purpose.
3 Ils se rendirent donc à Rome, entrèrent au Sénat et dirent: "Jonathan le grand prêtre et lanation des Juifs nous ont envoyés renouveler l'amitié et l'alliance avec eux telles qu'elles étaient auparavant."	3 So they went unto Rome, and entered into the senate, and said, Jonathan the high priest, and the people of the Jews, sent us unto you, to the end ye should renew the friendship, which ye had with them, and league, as in former time.
4 Le Sénat leur donna des lettres pour les autorités de chaque pays, recommandant de lesacheminer en paix jusqu'au pays de Juda.	4 Upon this the Romans gave them letters unto the governors of every place that they should bring them into the land of Judea peaceably.
5 Voici la copie de la lettre que Jonathan écrivit aux Spartiates:	5 And this is the copy of the letters which Jonathan wrote to the Lacedemonians:
6 "Jonathan, grand prêtre, le sénat de la nation, les prêtres et le reste du peuple des Juifs auxSpartiates leurs frères, salut!	6 Jonathan the high priest, and the elders of the nation, and the priests, and the other of the Jews, unto the Lacedemonians their brethren send greeting:
7 Déjà au temps passé, une lettre fut envoyée au grand prêtre Onias de la part d'Areios quirégnait parmi vous, attestant que vous êtes nos frères, comme le montre la copie ci-dessous.	7 There were letters sent in times past unto Onias the high priest from Darius, who reigned then among you, to signify that ye are our brethren, as the copy here underwritten doth specify.
8 Onias reçut avec honneur l'homme qui était envoyé et prit la lettre, qui traitait clairementd'alliance et d'amitié.	8 At which time Onias entreated the ambassador that was sent honourably, and received the letters, wherein declaration was made of the league and friendship.
9 Pour nous, quoique nous n'en ayons pas besoin, ayant pour consolation les saints livres quisont en nos mains,	9 Therefore we also, albeit we need none of these things, that we have the holy books of scripture in our hands to comfort us,
10 nous avons essayé d'envoyer renouveler la fraternité et l'amitié qui nous lient à vous afinque nous ne devenions pas des étrangers pour vous, car bien des années se sont écoulées depuis que vous nousavez envoyé une missive.	10 Have nevertheless attempted to send unto you for the renewing of brotherhood and friendship, lest we should become strangers unto you altogether: for there is a long time passed since ye sent unto us.
11 Quant à nous, nous ne cessons pas, en toute occasion, de faire mémoire de vous aux fêteset aux autres jours fériés, dans les sacrifices que nous offrons et dans nos prières, comme il est juste etconvenable de se souvenir de ses frères.	11 We therefore at all times without ceasing, both in our feasts, and other convenient days, do remember you in the sacrifices which we offer, and in our prayers, as reason is, and as it becometh us to think upon our brethren:
12 Nous nous réjouissons de votre gloire.	12 And we are right glad of your honour.
13 Mais pour nous, tribulations et guerres se sont multipliées et les rois nos voisins nous ontcombattus.	13 As for ourselves, we have had great troubles and wars on every side, forsomuch as the kings that are round about us have fought against us.
14 Nous n'avons pas voulu vous être à charge à propos de ces guerres, ni à nos autres alliés etamis,	14 Howbeit we would not be troublesome unto you, nor to others of our confederates and friends, in these wars:
15 car du Ciel nous vient un secours qui nous sauve. Aussi avons-nous été arrachés à nosennemis, et ceux-ci ont été humiliés.	15 For we have help from heaven that succoureth us, so as we are delivered from our enemies, and our enemies are brought under foot.
16 Nous avons donc choisi Nouménios, fils d'Antiochos, et Antipater, fils de Jason, et nous lesavons envoyés aux Romains pour renouveler l'amitié et l'alliance qui nous unissaient à eux auparavant.	16 For this cause we chose Numenius the son of Antiochus, and Antipater he son of Jason, and sent them unto the Romans, to renew the amity that we had with them, and the former league.
17 Nous leur avons mandé d'aller aussi chez vous, de vous saluer et de vous remettre notrelettre concernant le renouvellement de notre fraternité.	17 We commanded them also to go unto you, and to salute and to deliver you our letters concerning the renewing of our brotherhood.
18 Et maintenant vous ferez bien de nous répondre à ce sujet."	18 Wherefore now ye shall do well to give us an answer thereto.
19 Voici la copie de la lettre qu'on avait envoyée à Onias:	19 And this is the copy of the letters which Oniares sent.
20 "Areios, roi des Spartiates, à Onias, grand prêtre, salut.	20 Areus king of the Lacedemonians to Onias the high priest, greeting:
21 Il a été trouvé dans un récit au sujet des Spartiates et des Juifs qu'ils sont frères et qu'ilssont de la race d'Abraham.	21 It is found in writing, that the Lacedemonians and Jews are brethren, and that they are of the stock of Abraham:
22 Maintenant que nous savons cela, vous ferez bien de nous écrire au sujet de votreprospérité.	22 Now therefore, since this is come to our knowledge, ye shall do well to write unto us of your prosperity.
23 Quant à nous, nous vous écrivons: Vos troupeaux et vos biens sont à nous et les nôtres sontà vous. En conséquence nous ordonnons qu'on vous apporte un message en ce sens."	23 We do write back again to you, that your cattle and goods are our's, and our's are your's We do command therefore our ambassadors to make report unto you on this wise.
24 Jonathan apprit que les généraux de Démétrius étaient revenus avec une armée plusnombreuse qu'auparavant pour lui faire la guerre.	24 Now when Jonathan heard that Demebius' princes were come to fight against him with a greater host than afore,
25 Il partit de Jérusalem et se porta à leur rencontre dans le pays de Hamath, car il ne leurdonna pas le loisir d'entrer dans son territoire.	25 He removed from Jerusalem, and met them in the land of Amathis: for he gave them no respite to enter his country.
26 Il envoya des espions dans leur camp; ceux-ci revinrent et lui annoncèrent qu'ils étaientdisposés à tomber, la nuit, sur les Juifs.	26 He sent spies also unto their tents, who came again, and told him that they were appointed to come upon them in the night season.
27 Au coucher du soleil, Jonathan ordonna aux siens de veiller et d'avoir les armes sous lamain pour être prêts au combat toute la nuit, et disposa des avant-postes tout autour du camp.	27 Wherefore so soon as the sun was down, Jonathan commanded his men to watch, and to be in arms, that all the night long they might be ready to fight: also he sent forth centinels round about the host.
28 A la nouvelle que Jonathan et les siens étaient prêts au combat, les ennemis eurent peur et,le coeur pénétré d'épouvante, allumèrent des feux dans leur camp et s'esquivèrent.	28 But when the adversaries heard that Jonathan and his men were ready for battle, they feared, and trembled in their hearts, and they kindled fires in their camp.
29 Mais Jonathan et sa troupe ne s'aperçurent de leur départ qu'au matin, car ils voyaientbriller les feux.	29 Howbeit Jonathan and his company knew it not till the morning: for they saw the lights burning.
30 Jonathan se mit à leur poursuite mais ne les atteignit pas, parce qu'ils avaient franchi lefleuve Eleuthère.	30 Then Jonathan pursued after them, but overtook them not: for they were gone over the river Eleutherus.
31 Jonathan se tourna contre les Arabes appelés Zabadéens, les battit et s'empara de leursdépouilles,	31 Wherefore Jonathan turned to the Arabians, who were called Zabadeans, and smote them, and took their spoils.
32 puis, ayant levé le camp, il vint à Damas et parcourut toute la province.	32 And removing thence, he came to Damascus, and so passed through all the country,
33 Quant à Simon, il était parti et avait marché jusqu'à Ascalon et aux places voisines. Il sedétourna sur Joppé et l'occupa.	33 Simon also went forth, and passed through the country unto Ascalon, and the holds there adjoining, from whence he turned aside to Joppa, and won it.
34 Il avait appris en effet que les habitants voulaient livrer cette place forte aux partisans deDémétrius; il y plaça une garnison pour la garder.	34 For he had heard that they would deliver the hold unto them that took Demetrius' part; wherefore he set a garrison there to keep it.
35 Une fois revenu, Jonathan réunit l'assemblée des anciens du peuple et décida avec euxd'édifier des forteresses en Judée,	35 After this came Jonathan home again, and calling the elders of the people together, he consulted with them about building strong holds in Judea,
36 de surélever les murs de Jérusalem, de dresser une haute barrière entre la Citadelle et laville pour séparer celle-là de la ville et pour qu'elle fût isolée, afin que ses gens ne pussent ni acheter ni vendre.	36 And making the walls of Jerusalem higher, and raising a great mount between the tower and the city, for to separate it from the city, that so it might be alone, that men might neither sell nor buy in it.
37 Ils se réunirent pour rebâtir la ville: il était tombé une partie du mur du torrent qui est aulevant; il remit à neuf le quartier appelé Chaphénatha.	37 Upon this they came together to build up the city, forasmuch as part of the wall toward the brook on the east side was fallen down, and they repaired that which was called Caphenatha.
38 Quant à Simon, il rebâtit Adida dans le Bas-Pays, la fortifia et y déposa des portes muniesde verrous.	38 Simon also set up Adida in Sephela, and made it strong with gates and bars.
39 Tryphon songeait à régner sur l'Asie, à ceindre le diadème et à mettre la main sur le roiAntiochus.	39 Now Tryphon went about to get the kingdom of Asia, and to kill Antiochus the king, that he might set the crown upon his own head.
40 Redoutant que Jonathan ne le laissât pas faire et qu'il ne lui fît au besoin la guerre, ilcherchait un biais pour l'appréhender et le faire périr; s'étant mis en mouvement, il vint à Bethsân.	40 Howbeit he was afraid that Jonathan would not suffer him, and that he would fight against him; wherefore he sought a way how to take Jonathan, that he might kill him. So he removed, and came to Bethsan.
41 Jonathan sortit à sa rencontre avec 40.000 hommes choisis pour la bataille rangée, et vint àBethsân.	41 Then Jonathan went out to meet him with forty thousand men chosen for the battle, and came to Bethsan.
42 Tryphon, voyant qu'il était venu avec une armée nombreuse, se garda de mettre la main surlui.	42 Now when Tryphon saw Jonathan came with so great a force, he durst not stretch his hand against him;
43 Il le reçut même avec honneur, le recommanda à tous ses amis, lui fit des cadeaux etordonna à ses amis et à ses troupes de lui obéir comme à lui-même.	43 But received him honourably, and commended him unto all his friends, and gave him gifts, and commanded his men of war to be as obedient unto him, as to himself.
44 Il dit à Jonathan: "Pourquoi as-tu fatigué tout ce peuple alors qu'il n'y a pas entre nousmenace de guerre?	44 Unto Jonathan also he said, Why hast thou brought all this people to so great trouble, seeing there is no war betwixt us?
45 Renvoie-les donc chez eux, choisis-toi quelques hommes pour t'accompagner et viens avecmoi à Ptolémaïs. Je te livrerai cette ville ainsi que les autres forteresses, le reste des troupes et tous lesfonctionnaires, puis, prenant le chemin du retour, je m'en irai, car c'est dans ce but que je suis venu ici."	45 Therefore send them now home again, and choose a few men to wait on thee, and come thou with me to Ptolemais, for I will give it thee, and the rest of the strong holds and forces, and all that have any charge: as for me, I will return and depart: for this is the cause of my coming.
46 Lui faisant confiance, Jonathan agit suivant ses dires: il renvoya ses troupes, quiregagnèrent le pays de Juda.	46 So Jonathan believing him did as he bade him, and sent away his host, who went into the land of Judea.
47 Il garda avec lui 3.000 hommes dont il détacha 2.000 en Galilée, et mille allèrent avec lui.	47 And with himself he retained but three thousand men, of whom he sent two thousand into Galilee, and one thousand went with him.
48 Lorsque Jonathan fut entré à Ptolémaïs, les Ptolémaïtes fermèrent les portes, se saisirent desa personne et passèrent tous ceux qui étaient entrés avec lui au fil de l'épée.	48 Now as soon as Jonathan entered into Ptolemais, they of Ptolemais shut the gates and took him, and all them that came with him they slew with the sword.
49 Tryphon envoya des troupes et de la cavalerie en Galilée et dans la Grande Plaine pourexterminer tous les partisans de Jonathan.	49 Then sent Tryphon an host of footmen and horsemen into Galilee, and into the great plain, to destroy all Jonathan's company.
50 Ceux-ci comprirent qu'il avait été pris et qu'il était perdu comme ceux qui se trouvaientavec lui; ils s'encouragèrent les uns les autres et marchèrent en rangs serrés, prêts au combat.	50 But when they knew that Jonathan and they that were with him were taken and slain, they encouraged one another; and went close together, prepared to fight.
51 Ceux qui les poursuivaient, voyant qu'ils luttaient pour leur vie, s'en retournèrent.	51 They therefore that followed upon them, perceiving that they were ready to fight for their lives, turned back again.
52 Ils arrivèrent tous sains et saufs au pays de Juda, pleurèrent Jonathan et ses compagnons etfurent en proie à une grande frayeur; tout Israël mena un grand deuil.	52 Whereupon they all came into the land of Judea peaceably, and there they bewailed Jonathan, and them that were with him, and they were sore afraid; wherefore all Israel made great lamentation.
53 Toutes les nations d'alentour cherchèrent à les exterminer: "Ils n'ont pas de chef, disaient-ils, ni d'aide, il est temps de les attraper et nous effacerons leur souvenir du milieu des hommes."	53 Then all the heathen that were round about then sought to destroy them: for said they, They have no captain, nor any to help them: now therefore let us make war upon them, and take away their memorial from among men.
