1 Après ces événements, la parole de Yahvé fut adressée à Abram, dans une vision: "Ne crains pas,Abram! Je suis ton bouclier, ta récompense sera très grande."	1 And so, these things having been transacted, the word of the Lord came to Abram by a vision, saying: “Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your protector, and your reward is exceedingly great.”
2 Abram répondit: "Mon Seigneur Yahvé, que me donnerais-tu? Je m'en vais sans enfant..."	2 And Abram said: “Lord God, what will you give to me? I may go without children. And the son of the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus.”
3 Abram dit: "Voici que tu ne m'as pas donné de descendance et qu'un des gens de ma maisonhéritera de moi."	3 And Abram added: “Yet to me you have not given offspring. And behold, my servant born in my house will be my heir.”
4 Alors cette parole de Yahvé lui fut adressée: "Celui-là ne sera pas ton héritier, mais bien quelqu'unissu de ton sang."	4 And immediately the word of the Lord came to him, saying: “This one will not be your heir. But he who will come from your loins, the same will you have for your heir.”
5 Il le conduisit dehors et dit: "Lève les yeux au ciel et dénombre les étoiles si tu peux lesdénombrer" et il lui dit: "Telle sera ta postérité."	5 And he brought him outside, and he said to him, “Take in the heavens, and number the stars, if you can.” And he said to him, “So also will your offspring be.”
6 Abram crut en Yahvé, qui le lui compta comme justice.	6 Abram believed God, and it was reputed to him unto justice.
7 Il lui dit: "Je suis Yahvé qui t'ai fait sortir d'Ur des Chaldéens, pour te donner ce pays enpossession."	7 And he said to him, “I am the Lord who led you away from Ur of the Chaldeans, so as to give you this land, and so that you would possess it.”
8 Abram répondit: "Mon Seigneur Yahvé, à quoi saurai-je que je le posséderai?"	8 But he said, “Lord God, in what way may I be able to know that I will possess it?”
9 Il lui dit: "Va me chercher une génisse de trois ans, une chèvre de trois ans, un bélier de trois ans,une tourterelle et un pigeonneau."	9 And the Lord responded by saying: “Take for me a cow of three years, and a she-goat of three years, and a ram of three years, also a turtle-dove and a pigeon.”
10 Il lui amena tous ces animaux, les partagea par le milieu et plaça chaque moitié vis-à-vis del'autre; cependant il ne partagea pas les oiseaux.	10 Taking all these, he divided them through the middle, and placed both parts opposite one another. But the birds he did not divide.
11 Les rapaces s'abattirent sur les cadavres, mais Abram les chassa.	11 And birds descended upon the carcasses, but Abram drove them away.
12 Comme le soleil allait se coucher, une torpeur tomba sur Abram et voici qu'un grand effroi lesaisit.	12 And when the sun was setting, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a dread, great and dark, invaded him.
13 Yahvé dit à Abram: "Sache bien que tes descendants seront des étrangers dans un pays qui ne serapas le leur. Ils y seront esclaves, on les opprimera pendant 400 ans.	13 And it was said to him: “Know beforehand that your future offspring will be sojourners in a land not their own, and they will subjugate them in servitude and afflict them for four hundred years.
14 Mais je jugerai aussi la nation à laquelle ils auront été asservis et ils sortiront ensuite avec degrands biens.	14 Yet truly, I will judge the nation that they will serve, and after this they will depart with great substance.
15 Pour toi, tu t'en iras en paix avec tes pères, tu seras enseveli dans une vieillesse heureuse.	15 But you will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a good old age.
16 C'est à la quatrième génération qu'ils reviendront ici, car jusque-là l'iniquité des Amorites n'aurapas atteint son comble."	16 But in the fourth generation, they will return here. For the iniquities of the Amorites are not yet completed, even to this present time.”
17 Quand le soleil fut couché et que les ténèbres s'étendirent, voici qu'un four fumant et un brandonde feu passèrent entre les animaux partagés.	17 Then, when the sun had set, there came a dark mist, and there appeared a smoking furnace and a lamp of fire passing between those divisions.
18 Ce jour-là Yahvé conclut une alliance avec Abram en ces termes: "A ta postérité je donne ce pays,du Fleuve d'Egypte jusqu'au Grand Fleuve, le fleuve d'Euphrate,	18 On that day, God formed a covenant with Abram, saying: “To your offspring I will give this land, from the river of Egypt, even to the great river Euphrates:
19 les Qénites, les Qenizzites, les Qadmonites,	19 the land of the Kenites and the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites
20 les Hittites, les Perizzites, les Rephaïm, les Amorites, les Cananéens, les Girgashites et lesJébuséens."	20 and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, likewise the Rephaim,
	21 and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”
