EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 El que practica la misericordia presta a su prójimo, y el que acude en su ayuda observa los mandamientos.	1 Making your neighbour a loan is an act of mercy, to lend him a helping hand is to keep thecommandments.
2 Presta a tu prójimo cuando esté necesitado, y restitúyele a tu vez en el momento convenido.	2 Lend to your neighbour in his time of need, and in your turn repay your neighbour on time.
3 Cumple tu palabra y sé leal con él, y encontrarás en todo momento lo que necesites.	3 Be as good as your word and keep faith with him, and you wil find your needs met every time.
4 Muchos consideran el préstamo como una ganga y ponen en aprietos a quienes los han ayudado.	4 Many treat a loan as a windfal , and embarrass those who have come to their rescue.
5 Hasta que reciben, besan las manos de la gente y hablan con humildad de las riquezas del prójimo, pero en el momento de restituir, piden prórroga, sólo devuelven con palabras quejumbrosas y echan la culpa a las circunstancias.	5 Until he gets something, a man wil kiss his neighbour's hand, and refer diffidently to his wealth; butwhen the loan fal s due, he puts this off, he repays with offhand words, and pleads the inconvenience of the time.
6 Si llegan a pagar, el acreedor recibe apenas la mitad y tiene que aceptarlo como un favor. Si no, lo despojan de sus riquezas, y él se gana inútilmente un enemigo que le paga con maldiciones e insultos y le devuelve desprecio en vez de honrarlo.	6 Even if he can be made to pay, his creditor wil recover barely half, and consider even that a windfal .But otherwise he wil be cheated of his money, and undeservedly gain himself an enemy; the man wil pay himback in curses and abuse, and with insults instead of honour.
7 Así, muchos se niegan a prestar, no por maldad, sino por temor a ser despojados sin razón.	7 Many, not out of malice, refuse to lend; they are merely anxious not to be cheated for nothing.
8 Pero tú sé indulgente con el humilde y no le hagas esperar tu limosna.	8 Nevertheless, be patient with those who are badly off, do not keep them waiting on your generosity.
9 Socorre al pobre para cumplir el mandamiento y, en su indigencia, no lo despidas con las manos vacías.	9 In obedience to the commandment, help the poor; do not turn the poor away empty-handed in theirneed.
10 Pierde tu dinero por un hermano y un amigo: que no se herrumbre bajo una piedra y lo pierdas.	10 Spend your money on your brother or your friend, do not leave it under a stone to rust away.
11 Deposita tu tesoro según los mandamientos del Altísimo y te reportará más provecho que el oro;	11 Use your wealth as the Most High has decreed; you will find that more profitable than gold.
12 que el tesoro encerrado en tus graneros sea la limosna, y ella te preservará de todo mal:	12 Stock your store-rooms with almsgiving; this will save you from al misfortune.
13 mejor que un fuerte escudo y una lanza pesada combatirá a tu favor frente al enemigo.	13 Better than sturdy shield or weighty spear, this will fight for you against the enemy.
14 El hombre de bien sale fiador de su prójimo, pero el que perdió la vergüenza lo deja abandonado.	14 A good man wil go surety for his neighbour; only a shameless wretch would desert him.
15 No olvides los favores de tu fiador, porque él ha expuesto su vida por ti.	15 Do not forget the favour your guarantor has done you; he has given his life for you.
16 El pecador dilapida los bienes de su fiador y el desagradecido abandona al que lo salvó.	16 A sinner is careless of his guarantor's prosperity, the ungrateful forgets his deliverer.
17 La fianza perdió a muchos que vivían prósperamente, los sacudió como una ola del mar;	17 Going surety has ruined many who were prosperous, tossing them about in a heavy sea.
18 obligó a expatriarse a hombres poderosos, que anduvieron fugitivos por países extraños.	18 It has driven the powerful from home to wander among foreign nations.
19 El pecador que se ofrece como fiador y busca ventaja, se expone a ser procesado.	19 A wicked man in a hurry to stand guarantor in the hope of profit, is hurrying to be sentenced.
20 Socorre a tu prójimo en la medida de tus recursos, pero ten cuidado de no arruinarte.	20 Come to your neighbour's help as far as you can, but take care not to fall into the same plight.
21 Lo esencial para la vida es el agua, el pan, la ropa, y una casa para albergarse dignamente.	21 The first thing in life is water, and bread, and clothing, and a house for the sake of privacy.
22 Más vale vida de pobre en una cabaña que comida exquisita en casa ajena.	22 Better the life of the poor under a roof of planks, than lavish fare in somebody else's house.
23 Conténtate con lo que tienes, sea poco o mucho, y no oirás que te reprochan por ser un extraño.	23 Whether you have little or much, be content with it, and you wil not hear your household complaining.
24 Triste vida es andar de casa en casa: donde eres un extraño, no puedes abrir la boca.	24 It is a miserable life, going from house to house; wherever you stay, you dare not open your mouth,
25 Sirves de comer y beber a gente desagradecida, y encima tienes que oír cosas amargas:	25 you do not belong, you receive no thanks for the drink you pour out and hear embittering words intothe bargain:
26 –Ven aquí, forastero, prepara la mesa, y si tienes algo a mano, dame de comer».	26 'Come along, stranger, lay the table, what have you got ready? give me something to eat!'
27 –»Deja el lugar para alguien más importante; mi hermano viene a hospedarse, y necesito la casa».	27 'Go away, stranger, make room for someone important; my brother is coming to stay, I need thehouse.'
28 ¡Qué duro es para un hombre sensible que le reprochen la hospitalidad y le echen en cara una deuda!	28 It is hard for the reasonable to be begrudged hospitality to be shamed like a debtor.
