1 « Io non sarò così crudele da eccitarlo. Chi infatti può resistere alla mia faccia?	1 Whoever might vainly hope to do so need only see him to be overthrown.
2 Chi m'ha dato per il primo chè io gli abbia a rendere? Tutto ciò che è sotto il cielo è mio.	2 Is he not relentless when aroused; who then dares stand before him?
3 Non lo risparmierò nonostante le sue parole potenti e le sue suppliche.	3 Who has assailed him and come off safe-- Who under all the heavens?
4 Chi scoprirà il disopra della sua corazza? Chi entrerà nel mezzo della sua gola?	4 I need hardly mention his limbs, his strength, and the fitness of his armor.
5 Chi aprirà le porte della sua faccia? Sulla chiostra dei suoi denti sta il terrore;	5 Who can strip off his outer garment, or penetrate his double corselet?
6 il suo corpo è come di scudi fusi e coperto di squame ben serrate insieme:	6 Who can force open the doors of his mouth, close to his terrible teeth?
7 l'una è unita all'altra, e tra esse non passa neppure un fil d'aria:	7 Rows of scales are on his back, tightly sealed together;
8 l'una aderisce all'altra, si tengono strette senza mai separarsi.	8 They are fitted each so close to the next that no space intervenes;
9 Il suo starnuto è splendore di fuoco, i suoi occhi sono come le ciglia dell'aurora.	9 So joined one to another that they hold fast and cannot be parted.
10 Dalla sua bocca escono vampe come tizzoni di fuoco acceso.	10 When he sneezes, light flashes forth; his eyes are like those of the dawn.
11 Dalle sue narici esce fumo come da caldaia bollente sul fuoco.	11 Out of his mouth go forth firebrands; sparks of fire leap forth.
12 Il suo alito fa bruciare i carboni, e una fiamma esce dalla sua bocca.	12 From his nostrils issues steam, as from a seething pot or bowl.
13 Nel suo collo sta la forza e davanti a lui va la miseria.	13 His breath sets coals afire; a flame pours from his mouth.
14 Le parti sue carnose sono ben compatte, lanciando contro di lui i fulmini non andranno altrove,	14 Strength abides in his neck, and terror leaps before him.
15 il suo cuore è duro come la pietra, saldo come l'incudine del fabbro.
16 Quando si alza su, gli angeli tremano e sbigottiti si purificano.	16 His heart is hard as stone; his flesh, as the lower millstone.
17 Contro di lui nulla può la spada, la lancia e la corazza;	17 When he rises up, the mighty are afraid; the waves of the sea fall back.
18 il ferro è per lui come paglia, il bronzo come legno tarlato.	18 Should the sword reach him, it will not avail; nor will the spear, nor the dart, nor the javelin.
19 L'arciere non lo metterà in fuga; per lui son di stoppa le pietre della fionda,	19 He regards iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood.
20 la mazza la crederà un fil di paglia e si burlerà di chi brandisce la lancia.	20 The arrow will not put him to flight; slingstones used against him are but straws.
21 Esso avrà sotto di sè i raggi del sole. Si stenderà sopra l'oro come sul fango.	21 Clubs he esteems as splinters; he laughs at the crash of the spear.
22 Farà bollire come una caldaia il profondo del maro, lo renderà come unguenti in ebollizione.	22 His belly is sharp as pottery fragments; he spreads like a threshing sledge upon the mire.
23 Si lascia dietro una scia luminosa e farà apparire canuto l'abisso.	23 He makes the depths boil like a pot; the sea he churns like perfume in a kettle.
24 Non v'è sulla terra potenza chè gli possa esser paragonata, perchè fu fatto per non aver paura di nessuno.	24 Behind him he leaves a shining path; you would think the deep had the hoary head of age.
25 Guarda in faccia i più eccelsi, è re su tutti i figli della superbia ».	25 Upon the earth there is not his like, intrepid he was made.
