Call now! Will anyone respond to you? To which of the holy ones will you appeal?1 Therefore call, if there are any who will respond to you, and turn to one or another of the saints.
Nay, impatience kills the fool and indignation slays the simpleton.2 Truly, anger condemns the foolish to death, and envy kills the petty.
I have seen a fool spreading his roots, but his household suddenly decayed.3 I have seen a fool with a strong root, and I have cursed his excellence without hesitation.
His children shall be far from safety; they shall be crushed at the gate without a rescuer.4 His sons will be far from prosperity and will be crushed at the gate, and there will be none who can rescue them.
What they have reaped the hungry shall eat up; (or God shall take it away by blight;) and the thirsty shall swallow their substance.5 Their harvest, the starving will eat. The armed man will rob him, and the thirsty will drink his resources.
For mischief comes not out of the earth, nor does trouble spring out of the ground;6 Nothing on earth occurs without a reason, and sorrow does not rise from the earth.
But man himself begets mischief, as sparks fly upward.7 Man is born to labor, and the bird to fly.
In your place, I would appeal to God, and to God I would state my plea.8 Therefore, because of this, I will beg the Lord, and place my eloquence before God.
9 He does great and unfathomable and miraculous things without number.
He gives rain upon the earth and sends water upon the fields;10 He gives rain over the face of the earth and irrigates all things with the waters.
He sets up on high the lowly, and those who mourn he exalts to safety.11 He places the humble on high and encourages the grieving towards health.
He frustrates the plans of the cunning, so that their hands achieve no success;12 He dispels the thoughts of the spiteful, lest their hands be able to complete what they had begun.
He catches the wise in their own ruses, and the designs of the crafty are routed.13 He catches the wise in their cleverness and dissipates the counsel of the perverse.
They meet with darkness in the daytime, and at noonday they grope as though it were night.14 They will encounter darkness in the daytime, and they will grope at midday just as in the night.
But the poor from the edge of the sword and from the hand of the mighty, he saves.15 Thereafter, he will act to save the needy from the sword of their mouth, and the poor from the hand of the violent.
Thus the unfortunate have hope, and iniquity closes her mouth.16 And there will be hope for those in need, for iniquity will diminish its speech.
Happy is the man whom God reproves! The Almighty's chastening do not reject.17 Blessed is the man whom God corrects; therefore, do not reject the chastisement of the Lord.
For he wounds, but he binds up; he smites, but his hands give healing.18 For he wounds and he cures; he strikes and his hands will heal.
Out of six troubles he will deliver you, and at the seventh no evil shall touch you.19 He will deliver you into six tribulations, and in the seventh, evil will not touch you.
In famine he will deliver you from death, and in war from the threat of the sword;20 During famine, he will rescue you from death, and during war, from the hand of the sword.
From the scourge of the tongue you shall be hidden, and shall not fear approaching ruin.21 You will be hidden from the scourge of the tongue, and you will not fear calamity when it arrives.
At destruction and want you shall laugh; the beasts of the earth you need not dread.22 In desolation and in famine, you will laugh, and you will not dread the beasts of the earth.
You shall be in league with the stones of the field, and the wild beasts shall be at peace with you.23 For you are in harmony with the stones of the land, and the beasts of the earth will make peace with you.
And you shall know that your tent is secure; taking stock of your household, you shall miss nothing.24 And you will know that your home has peace, and, concerning your appearance, you will not sin.
You shall know that your descendants are many, and your offspring as the grass of the earth.25 Likewise, you will know that your offspring will be manifold and your progeny will be like the grass of the earth.
You shall approach the grave in full vigor, as a shock of grain comes in at its season.26 You will enter the grave with abundance, just as a crop of wheat is gathered in its time.
Lo, this we have searched out; so it is! This we have heard, and you should know.27 Behold, this is just as we have found it, which you have heard; walk it through your mind.
