| 1 Me fue dirigida esta palabra del Señor: | 1 The word of Yahweh was addressed to me as follows, |
| 2 «Hijo de hombre, propón un enigma y cuenta una parábola a la casa de Israel. | 2 'Son of man, put a riddle, propound a parable to the House of Israel. |
| 3 Les dirás: Esto dice el Señor Dios: “El águila grande, de amplias alas, de gran tamaño, de plumaje abundante y colorido, vino al Líbano y se apoderó de la punta de un cedro, | 3 Say, "The Lord Yahweh says this: A great eagle with great wings, long-pinioned, rich with many-coloured plumage, came to the Lebanon. |
| 4 arrancó la extremidad de una rama y la llevó a una tierra de mercaderes; la plantó en una ciudad de comerciantes. | 4 He took the top of the cedar tree, he plucked off the top branch, he carried it off to the country ofmerchants and set it down in a city of shopkeepers. |
| 5 Después tomó simiente del país y la sembró en un campo preparado, la puso junto a aguas abundantes, como un brote de sauce. | 5 Next, he took one of the country's seeds and put it in a fertile field; by the side of a generous stream,like a wil ow tree, he placed it. |
| 6 Germinó y se hizo una vid extendida, de poca altura, que tenía sus sarmientos dirigidos hacia el águila, y sus raíces debajo de ella. Se hizo una vid, echó pámpanos y extendió sus ramas. | 6 It grew and became a fruitful vine of modest size, grew up towards the eagle, its roots grewdownwards. So it became a vine, branching out and sprouting new shoots. |
| 7 Había otra águila grande, de amplias alas, de plumaje abundante: y he aquí que la vid dirigió hacia ella sus raíces, y extendió sus ramas para recibir más riego que en el terreno donde estaba plantada. | 7 But there was another great eagle with great wings and thick plumage. And now the vine twisted itsroots towards him and stretched its branches towards him, for him to water it away from the bed where it wasplanted. |
| 8 Estaba plantada en buena tierra, junto a aguas abundantes, donde podía echar sarmientos, dar fruto y convertirse en una vid espléndida”». | 8 It was in a fertile field, by the side of a wide stream that the vine had been planted, to branch out andbear fruit and become a noble vine." |
| 9 Pues bien, diles: «Esto dice el Señor Dios: “¿Prosperará? ¿No arrancará sus raíces, la despojará de sus frutos, y se secarán todos sus brotes? Sí, se secará, no habrá necesidad de un brazo fuerte ni de un pueblo poderoso para arrancarla de raíz. | 9 Say, "The Lord Yahweh says this: Will it succeed? Wil the eagle not tear out its roots and strip off itsfruit, so that al the new leaves it puts out wil wither, and no great strength is needed nor many people to pul itup by the roots? |
| 10 Estaba plantada, pero ¿prosperará? ¿No se secará apenas la toque el viento del este, en el lecho donde estaba plantada?”». | 10 Planted it may be -- wil it succeed? Wil it not shrivel up when the east wind blows? It wil wither inthe bed where it was growing!" ' |
| 11 Me fue dirigida esta palabra del Señor: | 11 The word of Yahweh was addressed to me as fol ows: |
| 12 «Di a la casa rebelde: “¿No comprendéis lo que significa esto?”. Diles: “El rey de Babilonia vino a Jerusalén, se apoderó de su rey y de sus jefes y los llevó a Babilonia. | 12 'Say to that tribe of rebels, "Do you not know what this means?" Say this, 'Look, the king of Babyloncame to Jerusalem; he carried away the king and the princes, and took them to his home in Babylon. |
| 13 Escogió a uno de la descendencia real e hizo con él un pacto y lo obligó bajo juramento, pero se llevó a los nobles del país | 13 He took a member of the royal family and made a treaty with him, forcing him to swear loyalty, havingalready deported the leading men of the country, |
| 14 para que el reino fuera humilde, no pudiera rebelarse, observara el pacto y pudiera subsistir. | 14 so that the kingdom would remain modest and without ambitions, and would keep and honour histreaty. |
| 15 Pero el nuevo rey se rebeló contra el rey de Babilonia, envió mensajeros a Egipto para que le dieran caballos y gente. ¿Tendrá éxito? ¿Podrá escapar quien ha hecho tales cosas? Ha quebrantado el pacto, ¿podrá escapar? | 15 But the prince rebelled against him and sent envoys to Egypt to procure himself horses and a largenumber of troops. Wil he succeed? Wil a man who has done this go unpunished? Can he break a treaty and gounpunished? |
| 16 Por mi vida —oráculo del Señor Dios— que, por haber despreciado el juramento y quebrantado el pacto, morirá en Babilonia, en la corte del monarca que lo hizo rey. | 16 As I live, I swear it -- declares the Lord Yahweh -- in Babylon, in the country of the king who put himon the throne, whose oath he has disregarded and whose treaty he has broken, there he will die. |
| 17 El faraón no lo apoyará en la guerra con un gran ejército ni con muchos hombres, cuando se levanten terraplenes y se construyan torres de asalto para matar a tanta gente. | 17 Despite the pharaoh's great army and hordes of men, he wil not be able to save him by fighting,however many earthworks are raised, however many trenches dug to the loss of many lives. |
| 18 Después de haber dado su palabra, ha despreciado el juramento, ha quebrantado el pacto. Con todo lo que ha hecho, no escapará”. | 18 He has disregarded the oath by breaking the treaty to which he had pledged himself and, havingdone al this, wil not go unpunished. |
| 19 Por ello, así dice el Señor Dios: “Por mi vida, lo haré responsable de mi juramento, que ha despreciado, y de mi alianza, que ha quebrantado. | 19 "So, the Lord Yahweh says this: As I live, I swear it: my oath which he has disregarded, my treatywhich he has broken, I shall make them both recoil on his own head. |
| 20 Extenderé sobre él mi red y quedará preso en mi trampa, lo llevaré a Babilonia y allí lo juzgaré por la infidelidad que ha cometido contra mí. | 20 I shal throw my net over him, he wil be caught in my mesh; I shall take him to Babylon and punishhim there for being unfaithful to me. |
| 21 Los más escogidos de sus escuadrones caerán a espada, y los que sobrevivan serán dispersados a todos los vientos. Entonces reconoceréis que yo, el Señor, había hablado”». | 21 Al the pick of al his troops wil fal by the sword, and the survivors be scattered to al the winds. Andyou wil know that I, Yahweh, have spoken. |
| 22 Esto dice el Señor Dios: «También yo había escogido una rama de la cima del alto cedro y la había plantado; de las más altas y jóvenes ramas arrancaré una tierna y la plantaré en la cumbre de un monte elevado; | 22 "The Lord Yahweh says this: From the top of the tal cedar tree, from the highest branch I shal take ashoot and plant it myself on a high and lofty mountain. |
| 23 la plantaré en una montaña alta de Israel, echará brotes y dará fruto. Se hará un cedro magnífico. Aves de todas clases anidarán en él, anidarán al abrigo de sus ramas. | 23 I shal plant it on the highest mountain in Israel. It wil put out branches and bear fruit and grow into anoble cedar tree. Every kind of bird wil live beneath it, every kind of winged creature will rest in the shade of itsbranches. |
| 24 Y reconocerán todos los árboles del campo que yo soy el Señor, que humillo al árbol elevado y exalto al humilde, hago secarse el árbol verde y florecer el árbol seco. Yo, el Señor, lo he dicho y lo haré». | 24 And al the trees of the countryside wil know that I, Yahweh, am the one who lays the tal tree lowand raises the low tree high, who makes the green tree wither and makes the withered bear fruit. I, Yahweh,have spoken, and I wil do it." ' |
