| 1 Los israelitas hicieron lo que desagradaba a Yahveh y Yahveh los entregó durante siete años en manos de Madián, | 1 The people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD gave them into the hand of Midian seven years. |
| 2 y la mano de Madián pesó sobre Israel. Para escapar de Madián, los israelitas se valieron de las hendiduras de las montañas, de las cuevas y las cumbres escarpadas. | 2 And the hand of Midian prevailed over Israel; and because of Midian the people of Israel made for themselves the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves and the strongholds. |
| 3 Cuando sembraba Israel, venía Madián, con Amalec y los hijos de Oriente: subían contra Israel, | 3 For whenever the Israelites put in seed the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the East would come up and attack them; |
| 4 acampaban en sus tierras y devastaban los productos de la tierra hasta la entrada de Gaza. No dejaban víveres en Israel: ni ovejas, ni bueyes, ni asnos, | 4 they would encamp against them and destroy the produce of the land, as far as the neighborhood of Gaza, and leave no sustenance in Israel, and no sheep or ox or ass. |
| 5 porque subían numerosos como langostas, con sus ganados y sus tiendas. Ellos y sus camellos eran innumerables e invadían el país para saquearlo. | 5 For they would come up with their cattle and their tents, coming like locusts for number; both they and their camels could not be counted; so that they wasted the land as they came in. |
| 6 Así Madián redujo a Israel a una gran miseria y los israelitas clamaron a Yahveh. | 6 And Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the people of Israel cried for help to the LORD. |
| 7 Cuando los israelitas clamaron a Yahveh por causa de Madián, | 7 When the people of Israel cried to the LORD on account of the Midianites, |
| 8 Yahveh envió a los israelitas un profeta que les dijo: «Así habla Yahveh, Dios de Israel: Yo os hice subir de Egipto, y os saqué de la casa de servidumbre. | 8 the LORD sent a prophet to the people of Israel; and he said to them, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: I led you up from Egypt, and brought you out of the house of bondage; |
| 9 Os libré de la mano de los egipcios y de todos los que os oprimían. Los arrojé de delante de vosotros, os di su tierra, | 9 and I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians, and from the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out before you, and gave you their land; |
| 10 y os dije: “Yo soy Yahveh, vuestro Dios. No veneréis a los dioses de los amorreos, en cuya tierra habitáis.” Pero no habéis escuchado mi voz». | 10 and I said to you, 'I am the LORD your God; you shall not pay reverence to the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.' But you have not given heed to my voice." |
| 11 Vino el Angel de Yahveh y se sentó bajo el terebinto de Ofrá, que pertenecía a Joás de Abiézer. Su hijo Gedeón majaba trigo en el lagar para ocultárselo a Madián, | 11 Now the angel of the LORD came and sat under the oak at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, as his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press, to hide it from the Midianites. |
| 12 cuando el Angel de Yahveh se le apareció y le dijo: «Yahveh contigo, valiente guerrero». | 12 And the angel of the LORD appeared to him and said to him, "The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor." |
| 13 Contestó Gedeón: «Perdón, señor mío. Si Yahveh está con nosotros ¿por qué nos ocurre todo esto? ¿Dónde están todos esos prodigios que nos cuentan nuestros padres cuando dicen: “¿No nos hizo subir Yahveh de Egipto?” Pero ahora Yahveh nos ha abandonado, nos ha entregado en manos de Madián..». | 13 And Gideon said to him, "Pray, sir, if the LORD is with us, why then has all this befallen us? And where are all his wonderful deeds which our fathers recounted to us, saying, 'Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt?' But now the LORD has cast us off, and given us into the hand of Midian." |
| 14 Entonces Yahveh se volvió hacia él y dijo: «Vete con esa fuerza que tienes y salvarás a Israel de la mano de Madián. ¿No soy yo el que te envía?» | 14 And the LORD turned to him and said, "Go in this might of yours and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?" |
| 15 Le respondió Gedeón: «Perdón, señor mío, ¿cómo voy a salvar yo a Israel? Mi clan es el más pobre de Manasés y yo el último en la casa de mi padre». | 15 And he said to him, "Pray, Lord, how can I deliver Israel? Behold, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family." |
| 16 Yahveh le respondió: «Yo estaré contigo y derrotarás a Madián como si fuera un hombre solo». | 16 And the LORD said to him, "But I will be with you, and you shall smite the Midianites as one man." |
| 17 Gedeón le dijo: «Si he hallado gracia a tus ojos dame una señal de que eres tú el que me hablas. | 17 And he said to him, "If now I have found favor with thee, then show me a sign that it is thou who speakest with me. |
| 18 No te marches de aquí, por favor, hasta que vuelva donde ti. Te traeré mi ofrenda y la pondré delante de ti». El respondió: «Me quedaré hasta que vuelvas». | 18 Do not depart from here, I pray thee, until I come to thee, and bring out my present, and set it before thee." And he said, "I will stay till you return." |
| 19 Gedeón se fue, preparó un cabrito y con una medida de harina hizo unas tortas ázimas; puso la carne en un canastillo y el caldo en una olla, y lo llevó bajo el terebinto. Cuando se acercaba, | 19 So Gideon went into his house and prepared a kid, and unleavened cakes from an ephah of flour; the meat he put in a basket, and the broth he put in a pot, and brought them to him under the oak and presented them. |
| 20 le dijo el Angel de Yahveh: «Toma la carne y las tortas ázimas, ponlas sobre esa roca y vierte el caldo». Gedeón lo hizo así. | 20 And the angel of God said to him, "Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and put them on this rock, and pour the broth over them." And he did so. |
| 21 Entonces el Angel de Yahveh extendió la punta del bastón que tenía en la mano y tocó la carne y las tortas ázimas. Salió fuego de la roca, consumió la carne y las tortas ázimas, y el Angel de Yahveh desapareció de su vista. | 21 Then the angel of the LORD reached out the tip of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes; and there sprang up fire from the rock and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of the LORD vanished from his sight. |
| 22 Entonces Gedeón se dio cuenta de que era el Angel de Yahveh y dijo: «¡Ay, mi señor Yahveh! ¡Pues he visto al Angel de Yahveh cara a cara!» | 22 Then Gideon perceived that he was the angel of the LORD; and Gideon said, "Alas, O Lord GOD! For now I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face." |
| 23 Yahveh le respondió: «La paz sea contigo. No temas, no morirás». | 23 But the LORD said to him, "Peace be to you; do not fear, you shall not die." |
| 24 Gedeón levantó en aquel lugar un altar a Yahveh y lo llamó Yahveh-Paz. Todavía hoy está en Ofrá de Abiezer. | 24 Then Gideon built an altar there to the LORD, and called it, The LORD is peace. To this day it still stands at Ophrah, which belongs to the Abiezrites. |
| 25 Sucedió que aquella misma noche Yahveh dijo a Gedeón: «Toma el toro de tu padre, el toro de siete años; vas a derribar el altar de Baal propiedad de tu padre y cortar el cipo que está junto a él. | 25 That night the LORD said to him, "Take your father's bull, the second bull seven years old, and pull down the altar of Baal which your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is beside it; |
| 26 Luego construirás a Yahveh tu Dios, en la cima de esa altura escarpada, un altar bien preparado. Tomarás el toro y lo quemarás en holocausto, con la leña del cipo que habrás cortado». | 26 and build an altar to the LORD your God on the top of the stronghold here, with stones laid in due order; then take the second bull, and offer it as a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah which you shall cut down." |
| 27 Gedeón tomó entonces diez hombres de entre sus criados e hizo como Yahveh le había ordenado. Pero, como temía a su familia y a la gente de la ciudad, en lugar de hacerlo de día, lo hizo de noche. | 27 So Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had told him; but because he was too afraid of his family and the men of the town to do it by day, he did it by night. |
| 28 A la mañana siguiente se levantó la gente de la ciudad; el altar de Baal estaba derruido, el cipo que se alzaba junto a él, cortado; y el toro había sido ofrecido en holocausto sobre el altar recién construido. | 28 When the men of the town rose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah beside it was cut down, and the second bull was offered upon the altar which had been built. |
| 29 Entonces se dijeron unos a otros: «¿Quién habrá hecho esto?» Tras indagar y buscar dijeron: «Es Gedeón, hijo de Joás, el que lo ha hecho». | 29 And they said to one another, "Who has done this thing?" And after they had made search and inquired, they said, "Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing." |
| 30 La gente de la ciudad dijo entonces a Joás: «Haz salir a tu hijo, y que muera, pues ha derruido el altar de Baal y cortado el cipo que se alzaba a su lado». | 30 Then the men of the town said to Joash, "Bring out your son, that he may die, for he has pulled down the altar of Baal and cut down the Asherah beside it." |
| 31 Joás repondió a todos los que tenía delante: «¿Es que vosotros vais a salir en defensa de Baal? ¿Vosotros le vais a salvar? (El que defiende a Baal, tiene que morir antes del amanecer.) Si es dios, que pleitee con él, ya que le destruyó su altar». | 31 But Joash said to all who were arrayed against him, "Will you contend for Baal? Or will you defend his cause? Whoever contends for him shall be put to death by morning. If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because his altar has been pulled down." |
| 32 Aquel día se llamó a Gedeón Yerubbaal, porque decían: «¡Que Baal pleitee con él, pues le destruyó su altar!». | 32 Therefore on that day he was called Jerubbaal, that is to say, "Let Baal contend against him," because he pulled down his altar. |
| 33 Todo Madián, Amalec y los hijos de Oriente se juntaron, pasaron el Jordán, y acamparon en la llanura de Yizreel. | 33 Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the East came together, and crossing the Jordan they encamped in the Valley of Jezreel. |
| 34 El espíritu de Yahveh revistió a Gedeón; él tocó el cuerno y Abiezer se reunió a él. | 34 But the Spirit of the LORD took possession of Gideon; and he sounded the trumpet, and the Abiezrites were called out to follow him. |
| 35 Envió mensajeros por todo Manasés, que se reunió también con él; y envió mensajeros por Aser, Zabulón y Neftalí, que le salieron al encuentro. | 35 And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; and they too were called out to follow him. And he sent messengers to Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali; and they went up to meet them. |
| 36 Gedeón dijo a Dios: «Si verdaderamente vas a salvar por mi mano a Israel, como has dicho, | 36 Then Gideon said to God, "If thou wilt deliver Israel by my hand, as thou hast said, |
| 37 yo voy a tender un vellón sobre la era; si hay rocío solamente sobre el vellón y todo el suelo queda seco, sabré que tú salvarás a Israel por mi mano, como has prometido». | 37 behold, I am laying a fleece of wool on the threshing floor; if there is dew on the fleece alone, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that thou wilt deliver Israel by my hand, as thou hast said." |
| 38 Así sucedió. Gedeón se levantó de madrugada, estrujó el vellón y exprimió su rocío, una copa llena de agua. | 38 And it was so. When he rose early next morning and squeezed the fleece, he wrung enough dew from the fleece to fill a bowl with water. |
| 39 Gedeón dijo a Dios: «No te irrites contra mí si me atrevo a hablar de nuevo. Por favor, quisiera hacer por última vez la prueba con el vellón: que quede seco sólo el vellón y que haya rocío por todo el suelo». | 39 Then Gideon said to God, "Let not thy anger burn against me, let me speak but this once; pray, let me make trial only this once with the fleece; pray, let it be dry only on the fleece, and on all the ground let there be dew." |
| 40 Y Dios lo hizo así aquella noche. Quedó seco solamente el vellón y por todo el suelo había rocío. | 40 And God did so that night; for it was dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground there was dew. |
